Time ran a cover with Iwo Jima imagery recently. It caught some flack.The cover story explored the fact that the US must participate/lead the green revolution. It pointed out the massive challenge that global warming will be and compared it to wars fought in the past... and suggested that fighting (and winning) the global warming war will be a task that may well dwarf other wars America has fought.Then, almost as if on cue, a group challenged the use of the Iwo Jima imagery and the green cause overall.From my perspective both camps views make sense and like many metaphors... they end up getting all mucked up in comparison details.On one hand we all seek to position our arguments and our points with the most relevant, most powerful platform possible. This is why so much of communications ar
I just don't see the issue over the Time magazine cover. Maybe I am just a product of different experiences and time. My dad was in the Second World War and Vietnam War and he is still alive. He has voted Republican most of his life except during the last election he voted for John Kerry. He likes to say that a monkey can do a better job than you know who. Shortly after you know who was elected the first time, my dad made claims that he would bankrupt the country. I am not sure how he came to such a quick conclusion and I thought he was delusional at the time but given the "bitter" situation today he was correct. My dad was against the Iraq war vehemently too. Like those issues, he probably thinks this issue over the Time Magazine cover illustrates how people fail to understand rea
For only the second time in 85 years, Time magazine abandoned the traditional red border it uses on its cover. The occasion – to push more global warming alarmism.The cover of the April 21 issue of Time took the famous Iwo Jima photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the Marines raising the American flag and replaced [...]

Clint Eastwood directed this Oscar-winning war movie, which in many respects is a sequel to “The Flags Of Our Fathers”, or to be more precise, the look at the same events from the other side of the battlefield. It was released in January of 2007 - a time when vast majority of Oscar-nomination hopefuls are [...]
The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favor the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester among his staff. In the lower echelons, a young soldier, Saigo, a poor baker in civilian life, strives with his friends to survive the harsh regime of the Japanese army itself, all the while knowing that a fierce battle looms. When the American invasion begins, both Kuribayashi and Saigo find strength, honor, courage, and horrors beyond imagination. Written by Jim Beaver {jumblejim@prodigy.net}

In my review of Flags of Our Fathers (2006) I noted the facelessness of the Japanese enemy in that story told from the American soldiers' point of view of the WWII battle for the island of Iwo Jima, from where the Americans would then start an attack on the Japanese mainland near the end of the war. Letters from Iwo Jima, a companion film also directed by Clint Eastwood, brilliantly fills in those missing perspectives and surpasses the slender merits of Flags of Our Fathers.Downfall was set in Hitler's bunker during the fall of Berlin. Letters from Iwo Jima portrays the last stand of the Japanese imperial forces, fighting on to certain death. The charismatic General Kuribayashi is drafted in to lead the depleted forces, bereft of any support from the destroyed naval fleet. His men are suffering from low morale and dysentery. They have no hope of withstanding an American attack. The US have more advanced military technology, aerial dominance and vast numbers. The shots of the American
Does anybody else think it's funny that Hollywood makes a movie (great movie, by the way) that criticizes how the flag-raisers at Iwo Jima were exploited to sell war bonds, something important, and then exploits one of the raisers' sons for an awards show.
It's right to honor them. Just don't criticize people who want to remember a glorious moment in American history as if you're so much more sophisticated; especially if you're going to do the same thing.

Unique Perspective on Famous Offensive
Earlier this year Clint Eastwood directed Flags of Our Fathers, a WWII drama that focused on several soldiers and how they fit into the famous photograph of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Now comes Letters from Iwo Jima, also from Eastwood, that tells the story of the Japanese soldiers involved in that very same battle. It's a very refreshing change, not
