      Off to Italy…
For the third (and last) time this spring, I’m going abroad for a few days. Tomorrow me and a bunch of friends are heading for Siena in Italy, where we’ll be staying until Sunday morning. The weather forecast promises fairly decent weather and the city is very picturesque (at least so I’m told, and the picture certainly indicates that it could very well be the case), so the stage is hopefully set for a nice trip.Have spent even more hard earned cash on a few CD’s and among the recent purchases is the new album The Hungry Saw by Tindersticks. Despite the band’s popularity through the years and fairly extensive back catalogue, this is my first encounter with the band. And a pleasant one so far, I should add, as this is album is crammed with lovely melancholic chamber pop.+ The Flic

      Dream Vacation: Italy
Summer is fast approaching in the Northern Hemisphere. It is that time of the year when vacations are planned. Informations are gathered as to the best hotels and airlines to book. It has been the practice of majority of travelers to book accommodations in well-known chain hotels. If you ask me, I prefer the smaller-homely bed and breakfast type of accommodations or the smaller private hotels where service is more personalized.A visit to Italy would not be complete without visiting the romantic city of Venice. To experience the gondola ride is definitely very romantic. The gondola has been the means of transportation in Venice. Although water-taxis are now used for main transportation in Venice, there are still a few hundreds of gondolas still for hire for tourists. There are more than 50

Italy’s elections go from bad to worse
It would be comforting to chalk all this up to electronic voting. However, Italians vote by marking a paper ballot with a pencil; the ballots are then counted by hand in front of observers from all parties. And while Berlusconi did have a distinct advantage as the owner of three television networks and several newspapers and periodicals, Italy also has a par condicio law, which guarantees equal time to all political parties, so television viewers heard from everyone from the far left to the far right. The par condicio also prohibits polling in the final 15 days and political rallies or television appearances the day before the elections in a welcome "day of silence." This law may soon become a thing of the past, though. Berlusconi blasted it as "undemocratic" throughout the elec

Anxiety in Italy over family finances
The country's two main warring coalitions both ran in this month's elections on platforms promising to lighten the financial burden of average Italians. Proposals ranged from eliminating unpopular real estate taxes, subsidizing dental care or even giving free books to the poor. Only when the new government takes office next month will Italians see which promises are kept.If the future is a distressing question mark, the Roman couple, like many Italians, blame the rising feeling of precariousness on at least one major event rooted in the recent past: the introduction of the euro as legal tender in 2002.

Do the Rich Pay Taxes? Italy Tells All
ROME — Many Italians’ attitude toward taxes runs something like this: Why should I pay if no one else does? Evasion is so common that landlords often demand two leases: one private with the actual amount expected, the other far lower and submitted to the authorities. Both, bafflingly, are vetted by lawyers. But for a few hours this week, all was laid bare with a technological bluntness unaccustomed here. The departing government of Romano Prodi, the center-left prime minister, on Wednesday posted the returns for all 40 million Italians who paid taxes in 2005.The Web site was instantly jammed to the point that few could actually see the data, but enough leaked out, with people spying on their neighbors and the rich and famous alike. Without Italy, Starbucks or Second Cup probably would not exist.Without coffee, Italy would grind to a halt. A day can not start without coffee, and a good meal often ends with it. Italy sees great potential in Chinese wine industry
"The Shanghai World Expo 2010 and the Olympics" – explained Giovanni Mantovani – "will be a true test as well as an opportunity for the image of Italian wine. There is great potential for Macao, considered the Las Vegas of China with its 30 casinos and 30,000 hotel rooms, which, until now, has been dominated by French and Portuguese offers. But the 6 euro price range, which is the price range that is expected to grow in consumption with three digit numbers, is precisely the range that Italian wines fit into. For now, Italian imports represent only 5% of total imports to China, and France claims 45%. Italy is preceded only by Australia and has registered growth of 177%.

Rumble: Living in Italy - part 1: Italian Politics
Since I moved here last year, people ask me "So how is it to live in Italy"? This prompts me to a series of blogs I want to start, to describe live in this Mediterranean country.First let me start with the disclaimer: I love the culture, the climate, its people, its food, and the country. I love Italy. Punto. But it is a country 'with an edge', which makes it fun at times, frustrating in other times. So I might come across as critical (or cynical at times), do bear in mind: I loooove Italy. As the Italians will vote for parliament tomorrow, maybe we should start this blog series with Italian politics. schmap italy guide 2nd edition
A photograph that I took back in 2003 while I was in Rome can be found in the second edition of the Schmap Italy Guide. A few weeks ago, a representative from Schmap found my photo of the famous Column of Emperor Marcus Aurelius on Flickr, where all of the other images from that trip are posted. I was asked by the representative if this photo could be used in their upcoming guide to which I said sure. So, here it is!Back then, I was using a simple 35mm film camera, which is why the photograph's sharpness isn't that great. I wish I had taken a better shot of the column, but the important thing I guess is that the photo was good enough for Schmap at least.
