The Doctoral Program in Economics (DEC) and the Doctoral Program in Business (DEA) emanate from the Department of Economics and the Department of Business Management at the University of Venice. For the third (and last) time this spring, I’m going abroad for a few days. Tomorrow me and a bunch of friends are heading for Siena in Italy, where we’ll be staying until Sunday morning. The weather forecast promises fairly decent weather and the city is very picturesque (at least so I’m told, and the picture certainly indicates that it could very well be the case), so the stage is hopefully set for a nice trip.Have spent even more hard earned cash on a few CD’s and among the recent purchases is the new album The Hungry Saw by Tindersticks. Despite the band’s popularity through the years and fairly extensive back catalogue, this is my first encounter with the band. And a pleasant one so far, I should add, as this is album is crammed with lovely melancholic chamber pop.+ The Flic
Summer is fast approaching in the Northern Hemisphere. It is that time of the year when vacations are planned. Informations are gathered as to the best hotels and airlines to book. It has been the practice of majority of travelers to book accommodations in well-known chain hotels. If you ask me, I prefer the smaller-homely bed and breakfast type of accommodations or the smaller private hotels where service is more personalized.A visit to Italy would not be complete without visiting the romantic city of Venice. To experience the gondola ride is definitely very romantic. The gondola has been the means of transportation in Venice. Although water-taxis are now used for main transportation in Venice, there are still a few hundreds of gondolas still for hire for tourists. There are more than 50

Wherever you go on vacation, you will not see everything you might wish to see if you travel by bus or train in that country. While on holidays, the feeling of being independent from bus or train schedule is very important. There are many places where a scheduled bus or a train will not take you simply because it does not go where you would like to get. In Europe, Italy is one of the top holiday destinations due to its warm, attractive climate and very rich history. There are many places in this Southern European country that you will not see during your tour purchased at a travel agency in your country. However, if you consider a car hire Italy, you will be able to get wherever you want, for how long you want and on what conditions. If a small, sandy beach far from bigger cities will capt
Palm trees and benches line the pedestrian shopping street Sparano da Bari, which sports Gucci, Nike and Benetton. You'll need a car — it might be worth renting one for a day or two and exploring.
Vodafone announced early Tuesday morning that they have made a deal with Apple to carry the iPhone in 10 different markets. The deal makes Vodafone the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Good news for quite a few of you! The handset will be available to customers in these markets "later this year". No further details have been given yet, but we're assuming that "later this year" indicates that these phones will likely be of the 2nd-gen variety.

It would be comforting to chalk all this up to electronic voting. However, Italians vote by marking a paper ballot with a pencil; the ballots are then counted by hand in front of observers from all parties. And while Berlusconi did have a distinct advantage as the owner of three television networks and several newspapers and periodicals, Italy also has a par condicio law, which guarantees equal time to all political parties, so television viewers heard from everyone from the far left to the far right. The par condicio also prohibits polling in the final 15 days and political rallies or television appearances the day before the elections in a welcome "day of silence." This law may soon become a thing of the past, though. Berlusconi blasted it as "undemocratic" throughout the elec

The country's two main warring coalitions both ran in this month's elections on platforms promising to lighten the financial burden of average Italians. Proposals ranged from eliminating unpopular real estate taxes, subsidizing dental care or even giving free books to the poor. Only when the new government takes office next month will Italians see which promises are kept.If the future is a distressing question mark, the Roman couple, like many Italians, blame the rising feeling of precariousness on at least one major event rooted in the recent past: the introduction of the euro as legal tender in 2002.
There has been outrage in Italy after the outgoing government published every Italian's declared earnings and tax contributions on the internet. The tax authority's website was inundated by people curious to know how much their neighbours, celebrities or sports stars were making. The Italian treasury suspended the website after a formal complaint from the country's privacy watchdog. The information was put on the site with no warning for nearly 24 hours.Sour grapes? The release of the information was one of the last acts of the outgoing centre-left government and has shocked many tax-shy Italians, says the BBC's Mark Duff in Milan. But it was also hugely popular, and within hours the site was overwhelmed and impossible to access. The finance ministry described the move as a bid to improve transp
ROME — Many Italians’ attitude toward taxes runs something like this: Why should I pay if no one else does? Evasion is so common that landlords often demand two leases: one private with the actual amount expected, the other far lower and submitted to the authorities. Both, bafflingly, are vetted by lawyers. But for a few hours this week, all was laid bare with a technological bluntness unaccustomed here. The departing government of Romano Prodi, the center-left prime minister, on Wednesday posted the returns for all 40 million Italians who paid taxes in 2005.The Web site was instantly jammed to the point that few could actually see the data, but enough leaked out, with people spying on their neighbors and the rich and famous alike. By some accounts, the fashion designer Giorgio Armani p

Delicately balanced on sharp ridges or squeezed into tight ravines, the random tangle of pastel-painted houses and traffic-free laneways of these five small Italian coastal villages known as the Cinque Terre are a true travel wonder to behold. A local railway connects the five villages running through tunnels gouged from the hillsides with occasional openings to glimpse the wide blue ocean, the green terraced vineyards or the colorful houses.Far beyond the occasional glimpse from a train is to experience the Cinque Terre by walking the panoramic Blue Path – a rugged walk of around five hours to explore all five lands. It would be hard to think of Italy without coffee. "Caffè" (with the accent on the last part and with the 'è' pronounced as in the English "head") is part of the national heritage, much like the Colosseum or Pisa's tower.Italy is home to a range of coffee drinks which took the rest of the world by storm. Without Italy, Starbucks or Second Cup probably would not exist.Without coffee, Italy would grind to a halt. A day can not start without coffee, and a good meal often ends with it. Many companies have their own inhouse coffee bar including waiters and all. So just to make sure you understand: The Italians do take their "Caffè" seriously.History:The coffee culture arrived from the Middle East via Istanbul to Venice, in the 1570's. Coffee would remain a luxury and mostly medicinal drink u
The cathedral of Orvieto is one of the architectural and artistic highlights of Italy but there is more to be enjoyed in this Umbrian town than the usual rushed tour-party itineraries allow. The piazza around the duomo gets busy around midday as coach-loads of tourists and school groups swarm around the famous church. But once they have moved on - to Rome or Florence - the town returns to its usual peaceful elegance and travellers clever enough to stay a night or a week can enjoy a real Italian treasure.
What is a typical Italian breakfast? People pass by a coffee shop on the road to work, and get a coffee and a cornetto (croissant). Not necessarily the healthiest of breakfasts, but it surely tastes good.More posts on the Road about Living in Italy.

"The Shanghai World Expo 2010 and the Olympics" – explained Giovanni Mantovani – "will be a true test as well as an opportunity for the image of Italian wine. There is great potential for Macao, considered the Las Vegas of China with its 30 casinos and 30,000 hotel rooms, which, until now, has been dominated by French and Portuguese offers. But the 6 euro price range, which is the price range that is expected to grow in consumption with three digit numbers, is precisely the range that Italian wines fit into. For now, Italian imports represent only 5% of total imports to China, and France claims 45%. Italy is preceded only by Australia and has registered growth of 177%.

Since I moved here last year, people ask me "So how is it to live in Italy"? This prompts me to a series of blogs I want to start, to describe live in this Mediterranean country.First let me start with the disclaimer: I love the culture, the climate, its people, its food, and the country. I love Italy. Punto. But it is a country 'with an edge', which makes it fun at times, frustrating in other times. So I might come across as critical (or cynical at times), do bear in mind: I loooove Italy. As the Italians will vote for parliament tomorrow, maybe we should start this blog series with Italian politics. I can summarize this topic in a oneliner: Italy had 61 governments since World War II. That is an average of about one government per year. That says it all.Critics say the current electoral l

A photograph that I took back in 2003 while I was in Rome can be found in the second edition of the Schmap Italy Guide. A few weeks ago, a representative from Schmap found my photo of the famous Column of Emperor Marcus Aurelius on Flickr, where all of the other images from that trip are posted. I was asked by the representative if this photo could be used in their upcoming guide to which I said sure. So, here it is!Back then, I was using a simple 35mm film camera, which is why the photograph's sharpness isn't that great. I wish I had taken a better shot of the column, but the important thing I guess is that the photo was good enough for Schmap at least.
