This week’s post was very nostalgico. So I want to explore words that have to do with emotions or sentimeni. But first lets start with the catalyst for the post.
Spumoni is Spumoni obviously!
Memories — Ricordi (re-kor-dee)
Grandpa — Nonno (noh-noh)
To Miss (Long For) — Sentire La Mancanza (cen-tear-eh lah mahn-khan-tsah)
This week we are talking about a variety of summer outdoor activities.
Here are some Italian words that go with this theme:
Nuotare (new-oh-tah-reh) — To Swim
Andare en Barca (ahn-dar-reh een bahr-kah)– To Go Boating
And some more Free Words:
Kayak is Kayak
Snorkeling is Snorkeling
Scuba is Scuba
So for this week, since we are talking about going out for a martini, I figured now would be a good time to explain that many words associated with going out for a drink in Italian are the same as their English counterparts. It is also relevant to explain that the word
un bar in Italian is the combination of a coffee bar and what we think of as a bar in English, except that they are combined – so think of it as a Starbucks that serves alcoholic drinks as well! So if you are looking for an espresso, you are going to un bar, the same place you are going if you want one of these:
un bitter – a bitter (like campari)
un martini
un cocktail
alcohol
Cin Cin!
We have already learned the words for hotel, youth hostel, vacancy, and no vacancy and we have learned how to make a reservation for a hotel. Now let’s learn how to say the key words for what is inside a hotel room.
Ho sete (oh sehteh)– I’m Thirsty
Vorrei ordinare due biccheri di vino
(vor-eh-ee or-dee-nah-reh doo-eh bik-e-air-reh dee ve-noh) —
I would like to order 2 glasses of wine.
Vorrei ordinare un dolce (vor-eh-ee or-dee-nah-reh oon dohl-chee) — I would like to order a dessert
Now if you wanted to order this in Italian, what would you say?
Vorrei una birra (vor-reh-ee oo-na bee-ra) – I would like a beer
How about this?
Vorrei pesce con patate fritte (vor-reh-ee peh-sheh con pah-tah-teh free-teh ) – I would like fish and chips!
Now if they had British Pubs in Italy, you’d be all set! But you will probably need this if you go to the coast and are going to have some nice fried fish there! Buon Appetito!
When you go on Vacanze (vah-cahn-tsah) – Vacation if you are going to be there for more than a day, you will need somewhere to stay. Perhaps you will stay in:
L’albergo (lahl-bair-goh) – The hotel
La pensione (lah pen-see-oh-neh) – The small hotel
L’ostello (loh-stel-oh) – The hostel
If the sign says: Stanza Libera (Stahn-zah Lee-beh-rah), there are vacancies. If the sign says Completo (kohm-pleh-toh), there are no vacancies.
If you want to stay for only one night, you say:
“Vorrei (vor-reh-ee) una camera per una notte”.
If you want to stay for two nights you say:
“per due notti”.
For tonight say:
“per stasera (pair stah-she-rah)”.
In honor of Mother Nature at Her Finest, I give you:
Il Mare (eel mah-reh)— The Sea/ The Beach
Conchiglia (la kon- keel- e- ah) – Shell
Sabbia (sah- be- ah)– Sand
Now that we know what types of eating establishments exist In Italia, we should now learn the names of mealtimes and what kinds of food you can expect to find during those meals.

Since we are talking about food this week, I think it is important to know the basics when it comes to place settings in Italian. So here we have it:
Il Piatto (eel pee-ah-to)— The Plate
La Forchetta (la four-ket-ta)—The Fork
Il Cotello (eel kohl-tello) – The Knife

Buon Compleanno! (Bwan coomp-lay-ano)—–Happy Birthday!
We celebrated Roberto’s birthday this weekend with a huge family bash!
That meant I was in the kitchen – A LOT. This also meant I was in my glory.
Il Pomeriggio (eel pom-air-rejo)–Afternoon
The way I remembered this word was by thinking about Parmigiano cheese. I can always remember things that are associated with food!
Il Gatto (eel gah-toh)—Cat
Cats are the best things in the world. If I was an animal, I would want to be a cat, not just any cat, but OUR cat. She eats the best food, has lots of snuggly places to sleep and gets all the affection she could need. I am so totally in [...]
Gelato (gel-ah-toh)—— Ice Cream
(And some freebies)
Nocciola (no-cho-la)—–Hazelnut
Sorbetto (sor-bet-to)—–Sorbet
Gelateria (gel-ah-tour-ia)—Gelato parlor
Gelato has got to be one of the best things to come out of Italy. For me, that is saying a lot as I am a big fan of most things that come out of Italy. To call gelato, ice cream, is almost not [...]
Well, one of the things I have been doing to get myself “travel ready” is I have been learning Italiano. Roberto was teaching me some words here and there which was fun, but he is not a teacher and so I decided that I needed to really do my best to actually learn the language. [...]
