AGRICULTURE: Bush Admin. seeks to move highly contagious animal disease laboratory from isolated Plum Island, NY to the mainland near livestock herds
If it isn't broke, don't fix itThe Bush Administration wants to move a laboratory that until 2003 was managed by the Agriculture Department. The laboratory studies the highly contagious foot-and-mouth virus. The Homeland Security Department now runs the Plum Island facility and wants to move the laboratory from the isolated island to the United States mainland where exposure to livestock would be catastrophic to the agriculture industry. A United Kingdom government laboratory was blamed for a recent £80m foot-and-mouth disease outbreak so the risk is real. The Bush Administration has consistently illustrated clumsiness, ineptness and incompetence so why should their decision on such a risky issue be trusted now? The costs and risks from a possible outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease a

      Sunset Beach Hotel, Shelter Island
I opened my mailbox yesterday and found this great looking vintage postcard with a nude model lying across the sand. I was intrigued. Flipping over the postcard, I saw that it was an invitation from the Sunset Beach Hotel located in Shelter Island, New York. For those that don’t know, Shelter Island is a stones throw away from the Hamptons and retains a slightly more hipster feel than its more famous (infamous?) neighbor. Sunset Beach is a boutique hotel owned by Andre Balazs who’s claim to fame includes the Chateau Marmont and Standard Hotel properties. The hotel itself only has twenty rooms, each appointed with hardwood floors, 400 thread count sheets, and a view of the sea from a private sundeck. Island Fever??? Living in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii....
I'm soliciting questions, and blog reader Mel asked this question... "Do you ever get "island fever" living on the Big Island?"For me it really didn't hit for several years, but I'm starting to notice it more now, my wife said it really didn't hit her for 4-5 years. If you live here, you're fairly busy with everyday life... working, cleaning, cutting down the fast growing green stuff if you have property - all the usual things you deal with everywhere else.... you can go quite a while without noticing any feeling of being cooped up. The one thing where it's completely different from life back on the mainland is that if you really want or need a break from the routine, getting in your car and driving to a location that is totally different is more or less impossible. David Gilmour... Castellorizon - On An Island

National Bio Agro Defense Facility, The New Plum Island and a Frightening Legacy
The legacy of Plum Island Animal Disease Center is not one of promise and prosperity it is one of security breaches, enviromental releases and funding cuts. The funding and the grants will be of benefit to the business special interest, Academia and Universities not surrounding communities.  The community will be left with what New York residents are being left with, a dangerous bio hazard on a massive scale.  Ask yourself, Is the legacy of PIADC what you want for your children and  grandchildren?   The summary below is part of a petition. All Island Landscaping: Curb Appeal coming Soon
We had Byron from All Island Landscaping in Portsmouth over yesterday because we both can't see ourselves digging 20something holes for a row of 5 to 6 foot tall Privet Shrubs along our 80something foot long property line on Main road, not to mention the cypress tree that will come with a root ball the size of our Ford Explorer (I wildly imagine). Byron also told us that our lovely very green grass around the new septic system is not rice grass but rye grass (Peter must have had dinner in mind when the septic guy told him what kind of grass it was). He also warned us that this rye grass is going to die this year and will turn into a stack of hey..., and a farmer I am not, so my guess, Byron will be back when that happens. So much for my easy landscaping idea. All Island Landscaping will al

      Rhodes Island
The city of Rhodes was founded in 408BC, the days of Alexander the Great and the Peloponnesian Wars.Sokratous Street is not a steep hill; the Turks, while they held sway, called it the Long Bazaar. You cannot miss the Turkish heritage. The Mosque of Suleiman, named for the conqueror of Rhodes, towers above the bustling shops. I'm worried about the minaret's lean. It's warm - 300 days of sunshine a year, thanks to Helios, the sun god. Time to sit in the shade, enjoy a crisp Greek salad and a Mythos beer. The young waiter at Cafe Sessytio in Sokratous Street spreads his arms in welcome. I'm in a parallel universe. Outside the walled courtyard, noise, banter, shoppers. Here, quiet, cool, comfort.
