Steve Irwin's zoo subject of Australia tax probe: Reuters reports that Australian tax officials are probing the affairs of late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin and his wife Terri over an offshore scheme involving their Australia Zoo wildlife business. The scheme, under investigation by the Australian Taxation Office, allowed the Irwin's zoo to claim large tax breaks by paying more than A$600,000 (250,000 pounds) a year in fees to a Singapore-based company.Update:- Australia Zoo fund baffles workers (Herald Sun): The zoo claims it was duped into participating in another offshore tax scheme involving a Singapore bank, HQZ Argentum, set up by disgraced tax commissioner Nick Petroulias.

With his base at the Australian Zoo, and his extensive TV career, Steve Irwin became one of the best-known "animal champions", of our time. Not only did he educate and create awareness, but he did so by making it fun. Steve Irwin's death shocked the world.Steve was a much loved celebrity and his TV shows were broadcast worldwide, his image recognisable to millions. Respected for his charismatic persona, Steve also held a deep, passionate commitment to help animals threatened with extinction.Steve and Terr'is story is not just one of sharing and following a noble cause but also a fairy tale love-affair. When Terri first laid eyes on Steve she saw a real-life action hero. Frank at the Google Earth Blog points us to a fun little easter egg in Google Earth - Steve Irwin (the late “Crocodile Hunter”) in front of the Sydney Opera House in Australia.
To find him, simply turn on the 3D buildings layer, search for “Sydney Opera House” and look near the water on the north side of the building.
GEB has more info and short video on how to find him.
This is the last paper Steve Irwin wrote before he was tragically killed.
Abstract
Crocodilians have a wide distribution, often in remote areas, are cryptic, secretive and are easily disturbed by human presence. Their capacity for large scale movements is poorly known. Here, we report the first study of post-release movement patterns in translocated adult crocodiles, and the first application of satellite telemetry to a crocodilian. Three large male Crocodylus porosus (3.1–4.5 m) were captured in northern Australia and translocated by helicopter for 56, 99 and 411 km of coastline, the last across Cape York Peninsula from the west coast to the east coast. All crocodiles spent time around their release site before returning rapidly and apparently purposefully to their capture locations. The animal that circumnavigated Cape York Peninsula to return to its capture site, travelled more than 400 km in 20 days, which is the longest homeward travel yet reported for a crocodilian. Such impres
It is one year today since the tragic, premature passing of Steve Irwin. He was “fatally pierced in the chest with a sting ray barb”. I remember hearing the news on the radio on my way to work that morning. While I would never have called myself a fan, I did admire him greatly, and I was deeply saddened. I could not believe how quickly people made light of it.
I have learned a lot more about Irwin in the year since his death. While some had criticised him claiming that he intruded upon animals in their natural habitat, others say that above all he loved and cared for the animals he knew so well, and always had their well being in mind. Rightly or wrongly, I find myself agreeing with the latter.
What is indisputable, is that Irwin had a wonderfully entertaining, extrovert personality. He oozed confidence, and viewers all over the world warmed to him. It often seemed as if he had no fear.
Considering all of the dangerous beasts he handled so skilfully, it is a heart-rending
Last week on BNN, I caught a sound bite of renowned Canadian value manager, Irwin Michael, who manages a string of sensational mutual funds. Most notably, the ABC Fundamental Value Fund, which returned a stellar 18.8% since inception 16 years ago. What I love about Irwin Michael is his uncanny ability to uncover diamonds in the rough while the shortsighted market is too busy chasing yesterday’s hottest stocks. Visit Irwin’s ABC Fundamental Value and note the propensity to divest from the market return over his 16-year tenure as the fund manager. Remarkable isn’t it?
Irwin Michael shares his wisdoms monthly on his website. I think my all time favourite has to be his contrarian take on exuberant market in December 1999. Here are a few excerpts:
This TSE index performance has been led by anything related to high technology, telecommunications or Internet whereas most other sectors such as financial services and resources, for instance, have languished most of this
Julienne Irwin appears as one of the top 20 contestants on season two of the NBC network’s reality television series America’s Got Talent. She is a 14-year-old country singer from Bel Air, Maryland. During the New York auditions, she did a cover of “How Do I Live” by LeAnn Rimes. Later on during the Las Vegas Callbacks, she sang “At Last” by Etta James, and in the semifinal rounds, she performed the song “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts.
Bindi Irwin, 8-year-old daughter of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, will be launching a children’s clothing line titled “Bindi Wear International”. She told WWD last week:
“My Daddy was working to change the world, so everyone would love wildlife like he did. Now it is our turn to help.”
100 percent of the proceeds will go to Australia’s conservation programs. For the last seven years, an Irwin family friend, Palmina Distasi, has been designing the line exclusively for the Australia Zoo, and now that it’s going international, she has plans to make it more fashion forward. Distasi has even incorporated some of Bindi’s own artwork into the designs.

Late Crocodile Hunter STEVE IRWIN is set to be posthumously honoured with an Australian wildlife reserve in his name. The Queensland government has devoted a 33,585 acre chunk of land near Weipa to be named Irwin Park. The area will house endangered northern quoll - a carnivorous marsupial - and the speartooth shark. Irwin's widow Terri enthuses, "Steve was in awe of the prolific wildlife of the Wenlock and Ducie rivers bordering the reserve and he would have been proud to see the property protected as a wildlife reserve." Australian Prime Minister John Howard says, "This is a fitting tribute to a passionate environmentalist and a great Australian".
The late ”Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, killed in a stingray attack last year, will be honored with a new wildlife reserve in Outback Australia, the government announced Sunday.
A 333,585 acre chunk of land near Weipa in the far north of Irwin’s home state of Queensland will be named after the popular television host and managed by his family, Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull said.
The area includes habitats for the endangered northern quoll, a carnivorous marsupial, and the speartooth shark, as well as an important gallery of dry vine forests, Turnbull said.
Irwin, who spent part of the money he earned from his television show on animal conservation projects, was killed when a poisonous stingray barb pierced his chest as he swam on the Great Barrier Reef last September.
His family vowed to continue his conservation work.
”Steve was in awe of the prolific wildlife of the Wenlock and Ducie rivers bordering the reserve and he would have been proud to see the
More from Martin...This from vere loqui.~There are a lot of lessons to be drawn from the Barbara Erwin debacle. Erwin was the short-lived Kentucky School Commissioner who never even served her first day because she was run out of town for padding her resume. Among these lessons are:It's a good idea for a school board to hire a search firm that actually does background checks of candidates It's a good idea for a governor to appoint a school board that acts swiftly when it's clear it needs to cut its lossesIt's a good idea for the governor to exercise his will over his own appointees......But listen to this somewhat less than perspicacious [Here, Martin is being less than obvious. It means "shrewd."] observation from the Courier-Journal:It [the Erwin episode] leads one to believe the speculation that Gov. Fletcher was focused on appointing a board that would quietly share a right-wing fundamentalist school agenda, not one that could function properly.Huh?To say that this observation

Terry Irwin, Steve Irwin’s widow, has said that the video will never be shown on television.
What purpose would that serve?
This came out in an interview with Barbara Walters that airs today. The interview is Terry’s first since her husband’s death. So it is now confirmed that there will be no official release of the video but things do have a habit of making their way onto the internet…

Steve Irwin, probably one of the best known advocates for wilderness and animal conservation in the world, tragically passed away recently in North Queensland, Australia. He was arguably Australia's best-known science communicator. His unconventional methods of communicating his work drew criticism from some and inspired others,
yet it is unarguable that Irwin will have a lasting effect on the environmental and conservation movements in Australia and around the world. Unlike so many other "wacky and zany" science communicators, Irwin was so genuinely passionate about his cause that he bought millions of dollars of land worldwide in the name of wilderness and animal conservation. How many people can you name

A few things to offload and clarify.1. Steve Irwin died as a result of a Stingray's Barb striking into this chest and heart. NOT Manta Rays.2. Class95 DJ Glenn Ong suggested that Manta Rays are a result of Steve's Death, that's false.3. Not all rays have stinging barbs.4. Manta Rays, not like rumours spreading around the web, do not have a layer of toxins coated on their bodies nor do they have stinging barbs5. Eating more BBQ rays is not an act of taking revenge for Steve but it is an act of allowing the BBQ seafood store to make more $$$ as well as for more blubber to gather in your body.6. Steve Irwin might be a Hero to most people, but to true conservationist, he is tempting nature too much. If you ask me, he deserves it. 7. The Species of Ray that is involved in Steve's Death is a Bull Ray, not Manta Ray.8. Reports have it that Steve pulled out the Barb before losing conciousness.9. Reports have it that Steve is not aware of his bleeding. 10. John Stainton said Steve pulled ou

The only video of Australian "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin's fatal encounter with a stingray has been destroyed, according to his widow.Irwin, 44, died on September 4 last year after a stingray's serrated barb pierced his heart while he was filming under water off Australia's coast.Australian authorities last week said that they had completed an investigation into Irwin's death and, to ensure it is never made public, destroyed all but one copy of a tape showing Irwin's death. The incident was captured by the documentary crew of "Ocean's Deadliest", the Discovery wildlife special Irwin was filming at the time of his death. This video was handed to his widow, Terri Irwin, who told TV's "Access Hollywood" in an interview being aired on Thursday and Friday this week that she had now destroyed this footage."There's standard protocols for examining certain evidence and that's no longer necessary," she told "Access Hollywood."Asked whether she kept the video returned to her, she said,
Inutili i, seppur repentini, soccorsi. Irwin aveva 44 anni ed era il proprietario e l'amministratore dell'Australia Zoo di Beerwah, nello stato australiano del Queensland.
Australian officials have handed over the only video of "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin's fatal encounter with a stingray to his wife, Terri. All other copies of the footage have been destroyed to prevent it ever being shown in public, officials said. The well-known naturalist died on 4 September last year when a stingray barb pierced his heart as he was filming an underwater documentary.
