Last week, the Bank of Ireland (BoI) had announced that four laptop computers lost over the past year or so could have affected 10,000 customers. The BoI has updated the number of customers affected to over 30,000, per the investigation they were conducting after the announcement.
There has been a lot of criticism on the BoI’s actions, or lack thereof: they had waited nearly a year to alert their customers about the increased risk of identity theft they were facing. The BoI for its part countered the criticism by saying that they didn’t want to alert the thieves about the true worth of the stolen laptop computers.
Today’s revelation by the BoI is not really surprising. Similar post‑announcements have been conducted in the past when other organization

Acclaimed US contemporary visual artist, Spencer Tunick, best known for his ability to pull large nude crowds, has put out a call for those prepared to bare all in public in Ireland for his latest project. The sometimes controversial Tunick plans to create a new body and landscape sculpture in Dublin's docklands and in the southern city of Cork in June by photographing more than 2,000 participants, according to his website. "We want everyday people, not exhibitionists," the New York-based artist, who has gathered thousands of volunteers for dozens of installations in locations worldwide, Tunick has told Irish media. Public nudity is normally a crime in Ireland and it was unclear Saturday whether an exception would be made for Tunick's art installations. His invitation promised that subject

Bank of Ireland loses four unencrypted laptops
Tom Espiner - ZDNet.co.uk , April 23, 2008 - The Bank of Ireland has lost four laptops containing sensitive customer details of approximately 10,000 people.
The laptops were not encrypted, according to a Bank of Ireland spokesperson. Customer details lost include bank accounts, names, addresses and medical details. The laptops only had standard username and password logins by way of security, according to the spokesperson.
Customers affected are those who took out or obtained a quote for a life-insurance policy from Bank of Ireland Life from branches in Drogheda; Dunleer; Bagnelstown; Court Place, Carlow; Stephen's Green; Tallaght; and Montrose last year, according to a statement on the Bank of Ireland website.

Bank of Ireland customers, nearly 10,000 of them, have had their information stolen. Between June and October of last year, four laptops were stolen from the bank’s life assurance division. The information breach included data on personal pension plan details, dates of birth, addresses, and bank account details. Whole disk encryption solutions like AlertBoot were not featured in the stolen laptops.
However, the bank must have realized at some point that full disk encryption is a convenient way of securing the data on their computers: the bank is in the process of encrypting all 5000 of them, which will take about two weeks.
This certainly pales in comparison to how the other type of bank in Ireland handled a similar situation earlier this year. In Fe

Hedge Funds in IrelandIrish Hedge Fund InterviewI completed a hedge fund interview with an Irish business and finance magazine yesterday about an article they are writing on the health of the hedge fund industry and specifically on hedge funds in Ireland. Apparently the financial times had written an article about the “death of hedge funds” and how they will be disappearing completely. Personally, I believe the Financial Times themselves is more likely to be vaporized than the hedge fund industry. Here is why:15,000+ hedge funds with over 45% of them located in geographically diverse locations outside of London and New YorkOver 250 distinct investment strategies which react differently to market events, regulations, etc.The hedge fund industry if fluid, if one or two governments incr
Beginning on May 5, 2008, the AdWords trademark policy for the UK and Ireland will change. The new policy will be aligned with the current one established in the United States and Canada. AdWords users in the UK and Ireland will be able to bid on keywords that contain trademarked words, but will not be able to include trademarked names in their ad text. Until now, accounts in those countries could not bid on trademarked terms. The U.S. policy has sparked controversy in the courts, which can't seem to agree on the use of trademark in PPC bidding. The change comes in the wake of recent reports that clicks on Google paid search results have been declining.

Almost 1,500 flights landed at Irish airports last year carrying weapons, munitions, explosives and other dangerous goods on board. Most of them are believed to have been destined for US military forces and to have passed through Shannon airport along with hundreds of thousands of US soldiers on their way to Iraq. The Department of Transport told the Irish Independent it never received a request for permission to land carrying depleted uranium ammunition. Anti-war campaigners claim that planes carrying the ammunition, which is used as an anti-armour weapon had passed through Shannon. The new figures, were revealed yesterday by the Department of Transport after media queries amid fears that an emergency landing at Shannon on Friday involved an old DC-8 cargo plane that was suspec

On March 17, over forty million Irish Americans and others worldwide celebrate the 1,500 year old legacy of St Patrick with parades and modern-day ?traditions?, some of which perpetuate derogatory cultural stereotypes of the Irish. However, behind the crass frivolity of green beer and seasonal shamrocks lies a heartfelt message of goodwill and social justice, which is as compelling today as it was fifteen centuries ago. - 2004-03-01 Friend of PR Web - 1
