"The Iraqis have invited us to be there." — Bush
One of the hallmarks of the Cold War was that whenever the USSR invaded another country, they claimed that they were "invited" by that country's government to enter and keep the peace. When the Warsaw pact nations invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968, the USSR declared that the 500,000 troops were invited into the country in order to "preserve socialism." On December 24, 1979 the Soviet Union invaded Af

Failure is an orphan. So are hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis.
Kevin Carson has a post on remarks made by Matthew Yglesias, in which Yglesias said:My ideas really are basically the ideas that were at the core of the bipartisan, establishment consensus throughout the Cold War years. And they're ideas that could and should have been the key ideas of center-left think tanks in the post-9/11 world. But that's not what actually happened. Instead, a set of ideas

Iraqis accuse Blackwater of shredding documents
Families of Iraqis who died in a shooting involving Blackwater Worldwide contractors accused the company Friday of shredding documents and destroying evidence. Lawyers for the families made the accusations in court documents but identified the source of the information only as former employees. They said officials at the company's North Carolina compound shredded documents related to ongoing investigations sometime around March 18. Company lawyers had no immediate comment Friday night, but they are quoted in court documents as saying Blackwater took appropriate steps to make sure documents were not destroyed. Lawyers for the Iraqis do not say what investigation the documents relate to. Blackwater, a major security contractor in Iraq, is under scrutiny in several matters. Most notab

Iraqis refuse to follow American script
Glenn GreenwaldSalon's Glenn Greenwald uses a recent Charlie Rose interview with Iraqis Sinan Antoon and Ali Fadhil to illustrate just how few Americans are able to hear for themselves on television the true opinions Iraqis have of the US invasion of their country and what the destruction of their society has meant to them. There's a script that American news broadcasters follow that paint the US invasion as a liberation, but those pesky Iraqis apparently have no intention of following it. Antoon and Fadhil pull no punches in their frank observations that the United States has destroyed their country with no foreseeable benefit to the Iraqi people. The interesting parallel here is a partial transcript of a Peter Jennings ABC television news interview during the 2003 invasion in which Dr

      Iraqis on Iraq
How the U.S. can still save Iraq | Salon As the debate over Iraq has raged in America, one group has been conspicuously absent: the Iraqis themselves. Neither war supporters nor opponents seem very interested in the opinions of the people most directly affected by the invasion. This fact reflects the moral confusion and blind spots that have haunted both sides of the debate, ones that stem from the profoundly ambiguous nature of Bush's war. Here's an interesting question. What do the Iraqi's want? I don't think most Americans have ever asked that question, though as the war's popularity has wained, I'm sure more have started to wonder. The article above is long and interesting. It catalogs many of America's failures throughout the Iraq conflict. I'm not sure if I agree with all of it,

Iraqis invite soldiers to Church- Yes, Church
Thanks and Praise: I photographed men and women, both Christians and Muslims, placing a cross atop the St. John’s Church in Baghdad. They had taken the cross from storage and a man washed it before carrying it up to the dome. I got this from Babalublog who got it from Michael Yon. Check this out: A Muslim man had invited the American soldiers from “Chosen” Company 2-12 Cavalry to the church, where I videotaped as Muslims and Christians worked and rejoiced at the reopening of St John’s, an occasion all viewed as a sign of hope. The Iraqis asked me to convey a message of thanks to the American people. ” Thank you, thank you,” the people were saying. One man said, “Thank you for peace.” Another man, a Muslim, said “All the people, all the people in Iraq, Muslim and Christian, is brother.” The men and women were holding bells, and for the first time in memory freedom rang over the ravaged land between two rivers. A military panel acquitted Spc. Jorge Sandoval on charges he killed two unarmed Iraqis, but convicted him of planting evidence on the dead bodies in an attempt to cover up the shooting. Sandoval’s lawyer claimed he was only guilty of misplacing government property by planting the detonation wire on the bodies. It is clear both men were unarmed and had their hands in the air after they accidentally stumbled on a secret sniper hideout. Spc. Alexnader Forbes who was with Sandoval said they were told by Sgt. Michael Hensley the suspects were “our guy.” In May, Sgt. Hensley was involved in a case in which Sgt. Vela killed an unarmed Iraqi who had his hands in the air. This is a sickening episode in the history of the American military. How can one be “aquitted” of murder but found guilty of misplacing government property by planting evidence to cover up a murder! If “suspicious” individuals picked up the material and walked away they were liable to be shot by hidden snipers. Sgt. Get the Iraqis to start rebuilding Iraq now
All the ’surge’ is doing in Iraq is delaying the inevitable. If and when the US leaves, the country will fall apart. Can there be any doubt about that? So why not try something entirely new. Now. Why not employ the Iraqis to rebuild there shattered country right now. Here’s how. Background The US has spent over $500 billion so far in Iraq. That works out to around $2 billion per week but does not include the costs of all the necessary replacement of capital, like bullets, AK-47s, helicopters, planes, etc. And, of course, medical costs will demand big, big bucks well into the future. Reports indicate that the war’s finally tally will surpass $1 trillion. And there’s the Pottery Barn factor: ‘you broke it, you buy it.’ In Iraq, the US is morally on the hook for the cost of rebuilding what it has destroyed. So here is Plan B Put a sum of money into a ‘pot’, say $200 billion (which is no more than two years on the ground in Iraq). Tripl

What Iraqis think of suicide bombers
What do people in Iraq think of the suicide bombers who explode in their midst every day? How do they view this phenomenon that, until a few years ago, had not previously existed in their country? There are a number of different reactions, summarized as follows: 1) the suicide bombers are strange foreigners, 2) they are brainwashed simpletons, 3) they are extremist religionists, and 4) they are "misinterpreting" the holy texts in the Koran. Clearly, the Iraqis are in grave need of some reeducation about their own religion from Western apologists: Many Iraqis of all classes say extreme religious views are responsible for creating suicide bombers and for spreading the suicide culture in Iraqi society. But people differ over who to blame. There are those, such as Ass'ad, a civil engineer, who lay the blame exclusively on clerics. "This is the ultimate crime," says Ass'ad. "You know those who call for jihad and so on? This is brainwashing. The sheikhs and the Islamists who are brainwas

Another saying is that nobody ever goes to war against a good trading partner. I suspect that is the thinking of our government in allowing such a massive trade imbalance with China. It’s an interesting dichotomy that the insurgents in Iraq hate Americans so much yet accept our goods. Iran Helping Iraqis Build Bombs
Iranian intelligence operatives have been training Iraqi fighters inside Iran on how to use and assemble deadly roadside bombs known as EFPs, the U.S. military spokesman said Wednesday. Commanders of a splinter group inside the Shiite Mahdi Army militia have told The Associated Press that there are as many as 4,000 members of their organization that were trained in Iran and that they have stockpiles of EFPs, a weapon that causes great uneasiness among U.S. forces here because they penetrate heavily armored vehicles. U.S. military spokesman Maj. Gen. His father was a very powerful cleric in Iraq and he has inherirted his power from the father rather than earning it on his own. Sounds rather like the Kennedys and Bush's doesn't? The Maliki government had given Al-Sadr control of the nations health ministry in exchange for supporting Maliki'a government. There have been numerous reports of ambulances being used to move and  deliver weapons, ammunition and militia throughout Iraq and hospitals being used as storage depots. Mahdi army death squads are said to roam freely in the hospitals and morgues and will torture and execute patients with impunity. At the start of the "Surge" Al Sadr is said to have fled to Iran to eascape capture. He has said through his followers that eh was consulting with supporters in Iran and has since returned to Iraq.
