In today's Wall Street Journal, reporter Glenn Simpson wrote a terrific page one story outlining the subprime lending industry's enormous influence on Congress and various state legislatures. It used that influence, of course, to ensure that the Feds and important states did not pass legislation that would have limited subprime lenders' ability to continue to make loans under ludicrously lax standards. That influence was purchased through concerted, expensive lobbying efforts as well as with direct contributions to many dozens of entities including state politicians, both major parties' national committees, and even President Bush. The industry was ensuring that it could go on making the very loans to otherwise unqualified borrowers who today are defaulting in droves, sending shock waves do

Due diligence! How can you do your research into a company? Investing in any company is risky business, but if you are going to be trading in the penny market you have to make yourself knowledgeable about each company to avoid the scam, rip offs, pump and dumps, and other schemes to separate you from your money.
When it come to large Corporations or companies listed on the bigger board, due diligence is not that hard to accomplish. These companies are forced by government regulations to file (supposedly) accurate reports with the SEC; who makes the filings publicly available. This is not necessarily the case with penny stock companies.
Getting Information About Companies
Let look at ways to gather information about larger companies. Some of the smaller (yes even some penny stock) companies can be investigated the same way.

A recently published Italian study found aspartame does indeed cause cancer. This is the second study by the same lab, which confirms their previous findings, yet FDA spokesmen have stated they see no reason to alter its previous conclusions that "...aspartame is safe as a general purpose sweetener in food."The Italian research team fed high doses of aspartame to rats, allowing them to live until they died naturally. The results showed increased risk of several types of cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer.FDA spokesman Michael Herdon stated that the conclusions from this study are inconsistent with other studies evaluated by the FDA, including five negative chronic carcinogenicity studies. Michael Jacobson of CSPI points out, however, that in previous studies the rats were killed after two years. He believes letting the rats live longer may be a better way to study the effects of chronic use.Granted, the study only confirms the cancer ri

The AU has asked the IRS to look into Bill Keller’s ministry for political intervention for articles he has written about Mitt Romney, a Mormon presidential hopeful. It began earlier this month when Keller put up an article stating that a vote for Romney was “a vote for Satan”. In the fallout Keller wrote another article where he again attacked Romney, whined about being attack and continued calling Mormonism a ‘satanic’ cult.
He also appears to have stepped over the line by actually encouraging Christians to vote for third party candidates should Romney end up the Republican representative (emphasis added):
The legitimate question that this has also raised is who to vote for in ‘08. As in the past, I refuse to tell you who to vote for, that is a choice YOU have to make. However, let me give you this guidance. No person who is serious about their faith can vote for a person who is going to support the killing of babies. No person who is serious about their faith can

The Czech Republic says it plans to investigate how Budejovicky Budvar is being managed and look into a number of recent contracts, including the U.S. distribution deal signed with Anheuser-Busch Companies.Budvar is the last major Czech brewer to still be under government control. The government has discussed selling the brewery to close a budget deficit. Trade Minister Martin Riman says he believe the deal with its American rival lowers the value of the company. Riman had said Budvar could fetch between $932 million and $1.4 billion on the open market.Budvar and A-B have been fighting in courts for decades over the Budweiser trademark. Earlier this year the two companies announced a surprising deal that has A-B distributing Budvar's brands in the U.S., including Czechvar, the name the brand is sold by in this country.
