A wonderful invention for the hygiene freak
I found this wonderful invention at a pharmacy last year. I almost cheered when I opened the pack at home (still not very certain of what I bought) and slowly took one piece of the toilet seat cover and place it on the floor. No more squatting on or layering toilet papers on airplane or train toilet seat. This would be one of the must-haves to pack for travelling use.

The New Yorker on Simultaneous Invention and the Intellectual Ventures Laboratories [Pulp-bite]
Malcolm Gladwell (smart guy, puffy hair) has a feature in this week's The New Yorker about the history of simultaneous invention, the best example being Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray both patenting the telephone on the same day. There are many other examples, leading to the conclusion that "scientific discoveries must, in some sense, be inevitable. They must be in the air, products of the intellectual climate of a specific time and place." The story is put into modern perspective by including scenes drawn from meetings of members of the company called Intellectual Ventures. The founding member, Nathan Myhrvold, also founded Microsoft's R&D labs. His idea for IV was to see if "the kind of insight that leads to invention could be engineered." The whole point being the creation of

Choosing Time Magazine’s invention of the year isn’t always an easy task — I know because I had to do it more than once. But this year, in my humble opinion, the decision was a no-brainer. Lev Grossman, who reviewed Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone for Time when it came out in June, edited the Inventions section and wrote the lead story, which I’ve reproduced in full below (Time is Fortune’s sister publication and Lev is a friend). To see the rest of the selections, you can go to TIME.com. Or you can buy the magazine. Invention of the Year: The iPhone By Lev Grossman Stop. Invention of the Year
When I first saw the title of this article, I took a minute to think about the great inventions of this year. There are lots out there and if we consider the year of the invention as the year where the device starts operations, I would choose the A380. Now take a moment to think about what you’d consider to be the invention of the year. Once you do that, check out the Invention of the year according to Time. Did you expect this? It might be obvious to many but I still can’t help and think that this is the invention of the year. I might just end up with it at the end of the day . Invention of the Year
When I first saw the title of this article, I took a minute to think about the great inventions of this year. There are lots out there and if we consider the year of the invention as the year where the device starts operations, I would choose the A380. Now take a moment to think [...]

Time Magazine names iPhone Invention Of the Year
I think its pretty well suited too, I cant think of a single thing that was announced and sold this year that did near as well as the iPhone did. The article starts by stating most of the arguments you might pose against the iPhone winning such an award, all the downsides, of the iPhone basically. Then they get to the real meat and potatoes, why it did win the award, and there are 5 very thought out reasons. First, “The iPhone is pretty,” and it really is, I actually kind of like the look of my Touch better, but the iPhone is pretty too. (more…) Share This

Time Magazine Names iPhone “Invention of the Year”
At least it’s not as lame as naming “You” the Person of the Year. But invention? I wouldn’t call it an invention. I suppose, in the strictest sense of the definition of the word, it is. But I would tend to think it as more a “Gadget of the Year” candidate [...]

Time: iPhone is the “Invention of the Year”
I might be saying this the second time in the day, but as soon as Steve Jobs had announced the iPhone during the Keynote address in January, we knew Apple had a winner on their hands. iPhone has easily been the most hyped gadget ever created and the great thing about iPhone is that it has been able to live up to all the hype. So when Time announced today that the "Invention of the Year" is the iPhone, we are not surprised, if it was anything other than the iPhone then we would have been. YouTube won the award...

iPhone chosen as Time magazine invention of the year
Time magazine has chosen Apple’s “JesusPhone” as the invention of the year. Apple’s cell phone won with other inventions from the fields of environmentally friendly technology, molecular science, robotics or military. Judges seemed to have mostly surrendered to iPhone’s hype: “Intel’s 45-nanometer (parts for chips) - that’s a serious deal, but it’s a lot less glamorous than the iPhone even though it’s important,” said Lev Grossman Time magazine technology editor and a member of the jury. Last year that award went to YouTube internet site for the idea of creating a place on the internet where people could share their videos with the rest of the world. Time gives five reasons why they have chosen iPhone this year. - “The iPhone is pretty”: it gives the user a chance to feel “smart and attractive” while using an iPhone. Time praises its functionality as well. - “It’s touchy-feely”

iPhone : Time’s Invention of the Year
Lev Grossman, one of the first four reviewers of the iPhone named it the Time’s Invention of the year. Why’s that ? Because its pretty, it’s touchy-feely (used to innovate past the graphical user interface), it’s a development platform (which can be upgraded for years to come) and it’ll make other phones better. We can’t argue about the fact that it’s pretty and that is has a touchscreen and that it might make other phones better but as we know the development platform won’t be here until February. Oh, and we really don’t know how often Apple will upgrade the software. There is no doubt that the iPhone is the invention of the year (you can wrote books about it) but we think Grossman’s article is just a little to supportive. Read Grossman’s article.

      The Invention of PCR
Few technical breakthroughs that have changed the face of their field like the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Gene cloning, sequencing of complex genomes, DNA fingerprinting and DNA-based diagnostics are just some of the techniques that were either inefficient, crude or plain impossible before PCR. The technique has revolutionized biological research and biotechnology to such an extent that it can be considered as one of the major reasons for the boom the field has experienced over the last 20 years or so. Oilskin - the invention and the reason it is in so much demand
Necessity is the mother of invention. I'm not convinced that is the whole story. My curiosity and desire to understand how things came about led me to discover some amazing stories. That need-to-know has convinced me that more than a few times, great things are invented by everyday people who are just looking for a niche to fill that makes them a living. Although you may call that necessity because of the need to support ones self, but I believe that rule applies mostly to the necessity of a particular item, like a bread slicer. Such is my discovery about oilskin clothing.I'm sure most of us (I include myself) have never heard of oilskin or never paid attention to its attributes. However, cowboys, range riders, bikers and sailors know all-to-well not to be caught in stormy weather with out

Especially if the boss is strictly demanding translations of a document at his desk till the end of the working day.If this is a way things are done at your job, you should hear good news from Fuji Xerox - which has begun to produce photocopy machines translating the Japanese text into Chinese, English and Korean. The copying machine is connected to the translation server. My New Travel Invention: The SquatStrap™
I’ve had a lot of entrepreneurial ideas lately. None of them particularly good, but amusing nonetheless. I think my coup de gras is what I’m officially trademarking as the “SquatStrap”. Actually let me officially make that SquatStrap™ so no one steals my idea. For the average What About Bob? germaphobe subway traveler, there’s the TranStrap. Now imagine we apply that idea to squat toilets: we take the TranStrap and attach a suction cup to the business end. Forget the burning leg cramps from hovering above the bowl for five-ten minutes. After finding a suitable squat toilet, the user simply suctions the Strap to a nearby wall and presto! No more cramps from holding yourself up. Let your hands, not your hams, take the beating. Imagine the entire worldwide community of backpackers with SquatStraps™. You could sidle up to your fellow leather tramping chaps as you hover virtually effortlessly over the bowl, chatting and giggling for hou

      Necessity- the mother of invention
As in….I was really, really hungry and it was necessary that I eat. Now. A bowl of cereal wasn’t going to cut it; toast wouldn’t have been enough and making pancakes or waffles would have required way too much time. The egg bin was empty; the imagination was running rampant. But what? I scanned cupboards, I perused the fridge. I even opened the freezer. Problem was, it was after 10:00am and I obviously couldnt’ get into breakfast mode, nor did lunch seem like a good idea yet, this owing to the fact that I had barely been up an hour. After several nights of poor sleep, I finally found the ‘Zzz’s’ I was sorely lacking, and Mike wisely let me snooze until almost nine before he brought up a fragrant cuppa joe to urge me out of bed. Thanks honey!! So back to my food. Suddenly I spotted a little container in the fridge that held the remains of our polenta from a previous meal. I spun around….there was a tomato on the counter! Back to the frid

A MomPreneur - Necessity is the ‘Mother’ of Invention
This is a great story of an individual, in this case a Mom who had a need, saw a solution and went off and built a business around it.   Was it quick journey? No, but with smarts and perserverance and a great deal of help the company is growing very rapidly. While pregnant in 1990, Lisa Jarrett discovered a prenatal education curriculum that she had read about in a medical journal. After becoming a huge fan of the curriculum and using it during her three subsequent pregnancies, Lisa found out that she was nearly the only woman who knew about it and that you couldn’t buy it anywhere at retail – only from the developmental psychologist who created it. So in 1998, Lisa acquired the rights to the BabyPlus Prenatal Education System (www.babyplus.com) to bring the product and its benefits to expectant mothers everywhere. Today, over 100,000 families worldwide have used the curriculum and it is sold at retailers nationwide. Lisa founded Indianapolis-based BabyPlus Company and streamlin

      La Gringa's Invention
If you live in a hot and humid climate like we do here in La Ceiba, Honduras, I think you are going to like my invention. It is incredible how much water can drip off of the OUTSIDE of a drinking glass in this climate. It drips on your clothes, your legs, your furniture, the floor. Even if you use a coaster, the water puddles up and runs all over the furniture.I guess that is why whenever I give a drink to a Honduran, they down it immediately and hand the glass back to me (cultural difference). I'm more of a sipper myself. I entertain myself for hours with a glass of iced tea, so the dripping was really a problem. The custom here in La Ceiba, both in restaurants and at home, is to wrap a napkin around the glass. This might work for a short time, if the tiniest, flimsiest napkins known to mankind weren't used. No kidding. These napkins are about as useful as as two squares of a one-ply toilet paper. People think they save money by buying the cheapest but the fact is the other night at a

      New Invention!
We’ve all wished for it but it was only a matter of time before someone took matters into their own hands and created it. SCHiCK Intuition Lady’s Razor ($8.29 @ drugstore.com) contains a Skin Conditioning Solid that lubes when it hits wet skin. The Solid (the blue around the razor head) contains aloe, cocoa butter and vitamin E and it surrounds the triple blade so it helps protect against nicks. The pivoting head adjusts to the level of the Solid so as you use it the blade will still give you the right shave. Question: Since I started shaving I always heard that you are only supposed to use a razor one time and then throw it away. If this is the rule then why is this one made to be used over and over? Things that make you go hmmmm… In any case, this mechanism has made shaving a breeze and, believe it or not, quite a thrill and not such a chore.

Davison Helps Inventor: Sports fan finds success with Zip Guard invention
Taking an idea to the market is no easy task. Getting players from Red Sox, Knicks, Yankees and celebrities like Roberto Clemente Jr. and even Jerry Seinfeld to wear it is an even more difficult task. But for 43-year-old Alberto Spies of New York he accomplished all of this despite setbacks along the way over an eight-year period."I paid my dues," Spies explained. "I threw my whole life work into this. I'm surprised I did this on my own."In 1999, Spies created the Zip Guard with the help of Davison and the Inventegration® process. Spies designed the Zip Guard with Davison to protect baseball players' forearms, while keeping their tendons tight and reducing sweat. It's perfect for batting especially, preventing vibration in the hands. However, throughout the years, the idea moved on to include basketball, tennis and other sports. Spies mentioned that it prevents scrapes on the forearm while playing basketball or when sliding into a base during baseball. The Zip Guard also underwent
