Acts 17: 19-33A meditation on Saint Paul by Father James E. Sullivan, m.s.:"Some of the philosophers seemed anxious to hear more of Paul's strange teaching so they invited him to address the Areopagus,* the famous council of learned men which decided on all questions religion, culture and education. Paul was happy to consent, although he felt a little uneasy in that setting which was purely pagan.

Businessmen, or businesspeople, are generally not considered the intellectual kind. You don’t have to go far to find a person who holds the belief that “to succeed in business, you don’t have to be really smart”.

As a Catholic stay-at-home dad who is homeschooling his children, my circle of friends and acquaintances is rather . . . circumscribed. I find myself moving within a group of people who more or less see the world as I see it. I'm not sure this is entirely a good thing. It's good for my emotional state; I don't feel I have to constantly defend my life choices. And it's good my children, because the
Malcolm Gladwell (smart guy, puffy hair) has a feature in this week's
The New Yorker about the history of simultaneous invention, the best example being Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray both patenting the telephone on the same day. There are many other examples, leading to the conclusion that "scientific discoveries must, in some sense, be inevitable. They must be in the air, products of the intellectual climate of a specific time and place." The story is put into modern perspective by including scenes drawn from meetings of members of the company called Intellectual Ventures. The founding member, Nathan Myhrvold, also founded Microsoft's R&D labs. His idea for IV was to see if "the kind of insight that leads to invention could be engineered." The whole point being the creation of

This is the first installment of my intellectual commitments series. It's a doozy ...I am a hard determinist. I believe that everything that has ever happened happened because it had to and that everything that will happen in the future must happen the way that it will. Being a hard determinist means that I reject the common construction of free will that says I can act or believe however I wish at any moment. I think that it can feel like we are free from all internal and external constraints and that we can act against our nature and disposition if we so choose, but I think that in reality that feeling is simply an illusion, a trick our mind, will, and heart play on us. I do hold to a very qualified and limited notion of freedom, but now is not the time for me to talk about that. Y
I understand where Hillary Clinton is coming from on the issue of abortion, even if it is not consistent with her normal collectivist view of government's role. Although, she purportedly has some moral squeamishness, Senator Clinton feels it would be an unwarranted intrusion for the government to regulate this personal matter. Of course, actually it is regulation of abortion by the federal government which pro-choice advocates endorse. They just, more or less, like the way in which it is now regulated—minimally, and the states are prohibited from doing it at all. It is the same type of federally imposed laissez faire promoted by the Bush administration in the economic arena, which prevented state banking authorities from regulating predatory mortgage lending.Barack Obama appears
Intellectual property rights and possible infringements are a major concern in many areas of the Internet today. eBay is by no means an exception. eBay has set forth a clear and straightforward policy on the rules it follows with regard to the protection of Intellectual Property Rights and its commitment to protecting the rights that belong to third parties. The introduction of this eBay policy clearly states that infringement is the unauthorized use of other people's intellectual property - like copyrighted material and trademarks.Rules that affect what a seller is allowed to sell on eBay include the restriction or prohibition of certain items simply because they have the potential to infringe on the intellectual property rights of others. These restricted items include: replicas, counter

Yesterday there was a demonstration in Jakarta – one more. A few hundred of students from the main universities gathered in front of the Constitutional Court, singing and chanting “Allahu Akbar” ("God is the greatest"). Well, what do you think? A bunch of bearded extremists whose sabers tingled with the desire to shed some of my Western blood? Think again. Those kids were just protesting against the film Fitna that they judge insulting to their religion. (Just in case you’ve missed the news reports, Fitna is a Qu’ran-bashing documentary recently released by the Dutch politician Geert Wilders, whose main claim to glory is to have given racism a place in his national Parliament). They were sporting banners claiming “Islam is not fear”, “Islam = Love” or “If you take pieces

Valuing intellectual property is no easy task. No matter what kind of intellectual property you own, there are certain bases you need to cover in order to assign a reasonable value to it. The petition is for changing the Second Life Terms of Service "to disallow creation and use of objects that are intended to circumvent object permission as established by the object's creator". There are few existing objects/scripts that can change the permissions of objects created by somebody other than the current owner. The problem is that these scripts can be easily abused, even though the primary reason for their creation is not to assist in content theft and there is no violation of the ToS by the creator. It the ToS is changed, then probably the number of cases where theft has occurred will be significantly lower. The petition only requires your Second Life name and email address, which you can set to private to your convenience. And it only takes few seconds of your time. Just fol

From the earliest days of human consciousness, people have been creating “intellectual property” - telling stories and singing songs, and sharing them over the group campfire with the rest of the tribe. In this manner, we have passed along history, the foundations of culture, from generation to generation for more centuries than can be [...]

Nasir Jones is a funny, funny guy. Nasir Jones, aka Nas, rapper extraordinaire is back in the news. In fact, he’ll soon be back with a new CD. The often controversial rapper is again doing what he does best, causing controversy. To be truthful, there really isn’t any controversy…just high comedy. Nasir Jones is a funny, funny man; borderline hysterical. Just in case you’re not aware of the latest, Nas has announced his forthcoming CD will be named… (drum roll please) Nigger! Yes, see how the mere utterance of the word in its full, gory splendor makes most “reasonable” individuals twitch in discomfort. Note; emphasis on the word “reasonable.” Nigger, coming soon on iTunes. Or, you can run out to your local music retailer and purchase Nigger as a gift for your loved ones this holiday season. In fact, call your favorite radio station and request Nigger right now. Yes, doesn’t that just “sound” like a good idea? THA
Penny Mellor of course wants to be the resident clever clogs. Having played too much "Operation" , Mellor wants to show the world how clever she is. Afterall, she has to as the General Medical Council, the Attorney General and the rest of the authorities have taken her on her word. Anyway, on a posting not so far away, I wrote " Barbie herself is becoming more vacant as time moves forward. A CT Scan of her brain would probably result in a space in between the skull. We ought to be generous and give her credit in having one brain cell beeping away. Whether the synapses work is of course another question".In a blog not far away, Mellor writes "Uhm. You'd need two cells at least for there to be a synapse - functioning or otherwise". So lets go back to basics Mellor, observe the simple diagram above. If Mellor had been taught GCSE Biology then she would be able to understand what a synapse actually is. In fact, she would also have understood that there are different types of synapses. In

Human beings are Spiritual Beings and are blessed with intellectual functions. The capacity of these functions is boundless. Creative Dreaming is an activity of the mind. And the mind is a powerful instrument for achieving individual and collective goals
Creative Dreaming is positive visualization of one’s ambitions. It is a deliberate effort directed towards achieving a target or progressive goal. It is a sublime, pure and Godly activity of using the mind to communicate with the Universal Supreme Power.
Creative Dreaming works in a simple and direct way. It is an aspect of Law of Attraction, which states that each person attracts to himself what he repeatedly has in his thoughts. It works in a way by sending your dreams to the subconscious mind, which in turn sends it to the Universal Supreme Power for materializations.
For Creative Dreaming to succeed, it must not possess any negative or harmful under-notions or aims. It must be positive and pro
It’s getting almost tiresome to refer to George Orwell over and over again. We need a new guy. One who can look at some of the new methods of intellectual property control and appreciate their truly gruesome horror.
Brace yourself for one scary story: Ars Technica is reporting on the new actions taken by an obscure 80’s artist to restrict his own fans from posting his work on their fansites. You might have heard of him: He’s usually known as “Prince”, but he changed his name to a glyph so obscure it’s not even in the Unicode set.
I could just about base a whole blog on making fun of Prince, but getting back to the scary part: a quote from that AT article goes:
“Prince’s lawyers have requested that three fan sites remove the offending artwork, images, and even their own photographs of their Prince-inspired tattoos.”
Whoa. So, let me get this straight: say if you have a tattoo of Prince’s album cover on your body, you

What do you do when a major daily violates your copyright?
#1 I guess the most prudent thing is to get their attention!
I already asked the picture perfect section people at MB to mention this to them or at least try to get in touch with me because I had some questions to ask them.. but I didnt get a response. Note: the picture perfect feature came out in July and it is now October. You can read the Picture Perfect Feature here.
# 2 Another prudent thing to do would be to state or present evidence of this violation.

In the last few weeks, I've read what seems like dozens of articles from around the country that complain about the high cost of college textbooks and how little is offered for their repurchase by college bookstores. The articles all point out that students are required to spend hundreds of dollars on books each semester and that university bookstores face little, if any, competition when it

Go on, tell me. What's your perception of gaming. Just for kids? Fun, but not exactly requiring massive levels of intelligence? I suppose you're right: only kids play games, then you grow up, grow out of it, and move on to more acceptable fare like books and films. I'll see you in a coffee house, then, with a comic book hidden inside your copy of Sartre before you leave for the cinema. Die Hard 4.0, is it? Fair enough. Far worthier of your time than a game.
Or is it? Games, lets face it, don't have the best reputation as something that'll hold up in a serious cultural discussion but do they deserve this downtrodden distinction? Not many people know that the main demographic of games players isn't the adolescent market who are usually associated with this particular pursuit: it's actually 20-35 year old men. So why do games have such an undeniably immature stature with most of the public? It's a difficult question, but one that needs to be answered: the view of gaming t
Everyone gets a great idea from time to time. More often than not we just say "hey wouldn't that be great" and go on with our day. Why don't more people follow through with the great ideas they have? It could be that they think it will be more trouble than its worth, that they don't have the resources to do it, or quite simply that they don't know where to start. The reality is that every great idea has the potential to become a valuable asset. In fact protecting and developing your ideas can be a very inexpensive process that requires little to no technical knowledge. Most people think that to bring their ideas to life they need to spend thousands of dollars on a patent and build complex working prototypes. This is simply not the case. The first step to developing and profiting from your ideas is to study the existing marketplace. Go to the local store that sells products similar to the one you have in mind. If it cannot be bought in a store check online. Pay close attent

Developing countries seek fair deal on rightsThailand has joined 50 other developing countries in Asia and Africa to call on developed countries to accept a greater measure of international protection for traditional cultural expression (TCE), traditional knowledge (TK) and genetic resources (GRs).The move is aimed at protecting the intellectual property (IP) of developing countries from unfair use by developed countries. The demand came in the Bandung Declaration, made during a meeting last week of the Asia-Africa Forum on TCE, TK and GRs in Bandung, Indonesia. It seeks to stop the unfair use by developed nations of the IP resources of developing countries and prevent "all forms of misuse, distortion and misappropriation".

Have you ever wondered why some people earn millions even with very little or no products to sell?
The answer lies in the intellectual properties owned by these enterprising geniuses. Intellectual Property (IP) is a bundle of rights vested by law in recognition of one's intellectual, pioneering, inventive and innovative efforts. IP that are valuable, rare, difficult

Crytek has just made it known that they’ve opened a new studio in Kiev. They’ve been recruiting for the past year and a half and have put the new team through an intensive training period.
Why ? I’m glad you asked. Here’s a quote from Faruk Yerli, Crytek’s Managing Director: “Now that our CryENGINE 2 middleware has reached the point of maturity where it can be used to support both different types and styles of games, and run on multiple platforms, we thought it was the optimum time to begin work on a new project based on our own new and original intellectual property..”
So what he’s saying is that they’re working on a totally new, CryENGINE 2 powered, non-fps game. We have no idea what it could be but let’s hope they’ll announce it at E3 this July. We’ll keep you updated as we learn anything new.

Summary: Mort Sahl is the cool, cerebral comic, a man whose brand of social and poltical commentary only went out of style when Americans decided they'd rather shop at the mall than question authority.
It's a wonder a guy like that was ever in style.
"You're right about the line shifting," Sahl told Schnauzer Logic host Robin Goldstein. "It'll get closer until you won't be able to say anything, and you'll forget what you believed in. Because you're afraid of getting your throat cut."
He recounted "the great American disclaimer — my opinions are not necessarily my own."
Opinions just get people in trouble
Or better to have no opinions at all. Witness a frightened Rich Little, the sacrificial entertainer at Saturday's White House Correspondents Dinner, serving up crude Osama jokes along with the flop sweat. "Is the President laughing?" Little asked rhetorically.

I have found a new blog, via Grizzly Mama, that shall become a regular read, I think: Project Education Renovation. All of two posts old, Cubed's blog is off to a very good and thoughtful start. April 7 poses an interesting question:
How did our educational system go into an intellectual death spiral? There are enough answers to that question to keep a blog going for years, I think. In
I first saw The Stone back in 1999 in a review article published on Inquest Magazine (a publication dedicated to the collectible card games and role-playing games). The game featured something that in my opinion has never been seen before. The Stone’s starter kit includes a nifty black pendant that has 6 random symbols that would be then used to access the game’s official website. The code would then be the player’s key into the vast universe of puzzles that the Enigma holds. Aside from having the standard 210 game puzzles, the site also encourages players to submit their own puzzles. The clincher is the community that the site was able to generate. Due to the relative difficulty of some puzzles, Stoners often exchange hints (often referred to as “nudges”) to move closer to solving all the puzzles in the Enigma.
The pendants went for $20, but a few years back, free online sign ups were permitted thanks to “virtual stones”. I started the game b
