(NBC/NEFA) - Voices From the Iraqi Insurgency: Exclusive Interviews with Hamas al-Iraq and the Al-Rashideen Army
(See also - MSNBC Deep Background: "Exclusive Interviews with Iraqi Insurgents" ) In an effort to help Americans better understand the evolving dynamics behind the Sunni insurgency in Iraq, I have begun conducting a series of exclusive interviews with prominent Sunni insurgent organizations. The first groups to accept my invitation were Hamas al-Iraq and the Al-Rashideen Army--arguably two of the

United States is drawing up plans to strike on Iranian insurgency camp
The US military is drawing up plans for a "surgical strike" against an insurgent training camp inside Iran if Republican Guards continue with attempts to destabilise Iraq, western intelligence sources said last week. One source said the Americans were growing increasingly angry at the involvement of the Guards' special-operations Quds force inside Iraq, training Shi'ite militias and smuggling weapons into the country. Despite a belligerent stance by Vice-President Dick Cheney, the administration has put plans for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities on the back burner since Robert Gates replaced Donald Rumsfeld as defence secretary in 2006, the sources said. However, US commanders are increasingly concerned by Iranian interference in Iraq and are determined that recent succes

NEFA Chart: State of the Sunni Insurgency in Iraq 2008
The NEFA Foundation has released a new chart that I have created mapping the complex network of Sunni insurgent groups fighting in Iraq. The chart includes representations for the four dominant insurgent umbrella groups--Al-Qaida's Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), the Reform and Jihad Front (RJF), the Political Council for the Iraqi Resistance (PCIR), and the Front for Jihad and Change (FJC)--as well as over twenty individual organizations, including Al-Qaida, the Ansar al-Sunnah Army, the Army of al-Mustafa,...(read more)

Comment on Plagiarism and the Counter Insurgency Manual by Hugh
It is just the plagiarized passages that are not attributed or footnoted. This is precisely what is so damning, and why this whole argument that manuals don’t have footnotes is a red herring. I noted here a few days ago that Montgomery ...

And yes, plagiarism happens all the time in field manuals and it will continue to happen. As far at the UC version of the manual, I can’t even imagine what they were thinking when they decided to publish the manual. ...

Is it your argument that only scholarship can be criticized for plagiarism? If so, I disagree. If not, we’re talking past each other.

This “genre difference” argument seems problematic in light of the fact that the manual did make use of quotation marks, footnotes, and bibliographic referencing. By adopting these conventions, I think it’s fair to suggest that the ...

Hi Drake,. Surely the manual already “is” an academic work—but it didn’t begin that way, it only became that because of the way it was sold. You are surely not saying that at the level of genre the manual is not, in fact, ...

To the contrary. Treating this only as a ‘field manual’ because it might be used in the field would be a mistake. It is part of how the war(s) are being sold to US and global publics, and has been marketed to diverse audiences with ...

The arguments about plagiarism have to do with principles and some here have contrived a situation in which stealing others’ work is not a bad thing or even suspicious, and in fact might be happy. I am not convinced yet that this is not ...

Al Qaeda and the Taliban's Pakistani insurgency
The Taliban are attacking President Pervez Musharraf's hold on political and military power in Pakistan. The Taliban is also working to weaken the resolve of the police, military, and civilians in the Northwest Frontier Province and beyond. The Taliban and al Qaeda have struck Pakistani military bases in Dargai, Kharian, Dera Ismail Khan, Hangu, and North and South Waziristan. Military convoys have been repeatedly hit by suicide attacks, improvised explosive devices, and ambushes throughout the Northwest Frontier Province. The Bannu suicide attack is the latest in series of Taliban suicide strikes at civilian, police, military, and governmental targets inside Pakistan. The tribal agencies have long been recognized as the nexus for al Qaeda and the Taliban's suicide campaigns in Pakistan, Afghanistan and beyond. The Pakistani Ministry of the Interior has repeatedly accused the powerful South Waziristan Taliban leaders Baituallah and Abdullah Mehsud of carrying out the suicide campaigns

Drug Czar & DEA launch “Counter-insurgency program” on US Soil
The DEA and the ONDCP have launched a surge of their own: against sick Americans on American soil and it has gone totally under the radar of the ever-hopeless and pathetic Mainstream Media. Insurgency. The summer’s most popular game server?
I’ve a quick break from the support tickets to catch some breath… With the game’s developers stating the game so close, gunshots can be heard, we ask, just what is the kerfuffle surrounding this game? Lazy I know, but quoting direct from the official Insurgency site for starters: Insurgency’s primary concept is to create an immersive online combat experience for the player, with an emphasis on teamwork and realistic elements to create intense firefights in detailed urban environments. The first scenario is set during the present war in Iraq, after the fall of the government and the uprising insurgency that followed as a result. What’s that in short? Having talked to a member of the team, he quotes it as a cross between CS Source and Battlefield 2. Battlefield 2 without the irritating base spammers. Wow, get me some of that. For me, the media (although in short supply, does the pre-reputation justice. Just look at this: We’ve also uploaded the Insurg

Update on Afghanistan Insurgency
This is just an update on the last article in today's Motiveless Crime News Headlines segment. The BBC is reporting that the Taliban basically lifted the idea of planting the bomb on a bus straight from the tactics of insurgents in Baghdad...great, this is what they mean by "Al Qaeda" (its a learning block on how to get your point across violently).According to witnesses the bomb exploded in front of a police headquarters and the area was littered with blood and body parts. It brings to mind more than a few of the horrific terrorist scenes that Bret Easton Ellis has been known for. It appears that the last three days are marking a sharp rise in Afghanistan insurgent attacks. The comparison to Iraq added into the mix means that the US could have an even messier mess in the Middle East...

On the Funding of the Iraq Insurgency
Today's edition of the New York Times includes an interesting article on the funding of militia's in Iraq. In "U.S. Finds Iraq Insurgency Has Funds to Sustain Itself' reporters John F. Lack of U.S. Intelligence on Iraq Insurgency
"Congress has appropriated almost $2 billion this year for countermeasures to protect our troops in Iraq against improvised explosive devices, but the administration has not put forward a request to invest comparable resources in trying to understand the people who fabricate, plant and explode those devices." According the Iraq Study Group Report, which was released last week, the United States government '(...) still does not understand very well either the insurgency in Iraq or the role of the militias' (chapter 9, "Intelligence'). Furthermore, the Study Group found that "there is significant underreporting of the violence in Iraq'. "For example, on one day in July 2006 there were 93 attacks or significant acts of violence reported. Yet a careful review of the reports for that single day brought to light 1,100 acts of violence.'
