“It’s like one of those paradigm shifts,” Julie said of her family’s trip to Nepal. When asked to elaborate she draws several parallels between the US and Nepal; parallels that shed light on monumental differences between both countries. Differences like the fact that basic comforts such as running water and electricity are not a universal [...]

While the STL conference is ongoing, it is striking to see how their very original views are catching on, to say it nicely. I've written about their 'brainstorm' and accompanying report before and stumbled over no less than three institutions who seems to be taking a page or two from STL's Telco 2.0 (TM) views (yes, they trademarked the term): IBM, Accenture and Heavy Reading (a unit of UBM).

The questions will aim to draw out opinion and insight and wide latitude will be given to those who are kind enough to respond. While I will certainly welcome responses from readers, I will not be commenting (agreeing or disagreeing) with these posts. Another goal, of course, will be to provide timely information. For that reason, we could probably not have a more outstanding beginning. The PardonPower INSIGHTS posts will begin with responses from Tamara N. The Audi Cabriolet concept study had its debut in the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, and the Miami Design/2007 sets another stage for the Cabriolet concept study as it is the center of the designer’s affair. Predicted to catch everybody’s attention as the study presents ultimate performance wrapped in elegant styling. Autopsy result on Chad SchieberThe medical examiner's office has announced the results of the autopsy performed on Chad Schieber, who died during Sunday's Chicago Marathon. Schieber had a heart condition known as mitral valve prolapse and did not die as a result of the oppressive heat, as had been widely speculated.Schieber, a 35-year old policeman from Michigan, collapsed at the 18 mile mark of the Chicago Marathon, and was later pronounced dead. This tragic event, together with approximately 300 other medical cases, prompted the race organizers to take the unprecedented step of shutting the course down after about 4 hours of running. In the aftermath of the race, many have expressed opinions about whether this was the right decision. What is clear is that the race exerted a massive toll on those taking part. In a post earlier today, we looked at some of the science and physiology behind what is obviously a highly topical issue. To date, the prevalent theory for what happened to

The Association for Research and Enlightenment’s website says this about their founder:
“For forty-three years of his adult life, Edgar Cayce demonstrated the uncanny ability to put himself into some kind of self-induced sleep state by lying down on a couch, closing his eyes, and folding his hands over his stomach. This state of relaxation and meditation enabled him to place his mind in contact with all time and space. From this state he could respond to questions . . His responses to these questions came to be called “readings” . . .”
Edgar Cayce had been giving readings on health for about twenty years before the first reading on astrology was given in 1923. “Upon awakening from the first reading, Edgar Cayce was initially surprised and a bit fearful of the answers he had given. In fact, up until that time in 1923, he thought horoscopes were fake.”

US Rep. George Miller, one of the chief architects of No Child Left Behind, made one of his NCLB listening stops in Tampa today to hear what local educators think as the Congress reauthorizes the accountability law. He announced that the House draft bill should be released online later today, and revealed some of the details.
Perhaps the key change is that the Congress will move toward a growth model for assessing whether schools and students are meeting academic goals. A dozen states, including Florida, already have won approval from the administration to move this direction. "It reflects more what is happening on the ground," Miller, a California Democrat, said.
"Comparing last year's fourth graders to this year's fourth graders doesn't tell us very much about what is going on in the schools," he said.
The bill would also adopt a more uniform high school graduation rate as one success measure, as many governors have proposed.
Schools will remain accountable for English-langua
In another post, we looked extensively at the Men's 10000m final, because it was such a good race, from a spectator point of view, but also because it was so intruiging for physiological reasons.here, we look at the rest of Day 3's action:Women's 3000m Steeplechase - the expected Russian DominanceAs predicted, the Russians dominated the 3000m Steeplechase, winning gold and silver. It was Yeketerina Volkova who won, in an impressive time of 9:06, given the conditions in Osaka. Her compatriot, Tatyana Petrova was 3 seconds back. The biggest surprise was that the world record holder, Gulnara Samitova-Galkina, failed to win a medal, finishing some 24 seconds behind. She took the race out hard, running the first 1km in world record tempo, but then fell away badly, perhaps a victim of heat and over-enthusiasm.The third medal was taken by a Kenyan, Eunice Jepkorir. The race was quite uneventful, more of a mass 'time-trial' than anything else. It is clearly a new event, because the relati
The IAAF World Championships in Osaka began with a bang, and the temperatures matched some of the action. At this stage, the action is dominated by qualifying heats (a pun, in this particular case) but even that has been quite explosive, with a number of surprises on the first day. Two major running finals to report on, the Men's Marathon and the Women's 10 000m final, which was a stunner. And of course, we move ever closer to the potential world record in the 100m and the show-down between Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell (see our Picture above). But let's begin with the Men's Marathon...Men's Marathon - New World Champion Luke KibetThe story of the men's marathon was always going to be the heat. I have to somewhat sheepishly admit that I yesterday wrote about the women's marathon, a faux pas I will blame on the fact that I am on a travelling holiday around Europe, combined with the Swiss Mountain air at the time of writing...! So apologies for that, it was in fact the men's maratho

There are two main reasons you might integrate your phone system's SMDR feed with your call recording system.1) Many of our call recording projects utilize random sample recording to obtain a number of recordings per agent per month. Random sample recording is typically more affordable than 100% call logging in that less recording channels and servers are needed. Random sample recording yields enough recorded interactions to satisfy the quality assurance initiative. In the past, random sample recordings were scheduled as a block of time recording. Block of time recordings can end up containing multiple calls, or can end up missing the starts and stops of some calls, or even dead air. Block of time will get the job done, but you gain a tremendous amount of efficiencies when you begin recording call-by-call.Most phone systems have a Station Message Detail Recording(SMDR) feed which can be tapped to yield the start and stop of calls. Using SMDR, your company can record entire calls from s
Stay Hungry Stay Foolish this is the message from Steve jobs.Probably one of the most inspiring people of our time Steve Jobs is the man who created Apple out of his own garage but was sacked by the board of Apple which led to Apple's decline but he again returned back to Apple to create History all over again with iphone and ipods. He gave an amazing speech at Stanford where in he talks about three stories of his lifeFirstly how he quit college and had to sleep on the floor of his friends dorm and return coke bottles to buy food but still took classes which interested him which meant doing a calligraphy course which told him all about fonts and was the basis of Macintosh's great design years later this he calls connecting the dots.Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. My auditions have been getting better -- not steadily, but more think small but significant leaps forward after periods where I don't seem to be getting better at all, yet I continue to work and push, and I think that's the key to my growth (think Punctuated Equilibrium):
. . . instead of a slow, continuous movement, evolution tends to be characterized by long periods of virtual standstill ("equilibrium"), "punctuated" by episodes of very fast development of new forms.
Having a difficult audition is painful, but they're incredibly useful, if I can learn from them. Here's what I've learned:
I think the basis of a good monologue is a attention and concentration: if you're not paying attention to the correct things and/or if you're not fully concentrating for whatever reason, the audition will just not be what it could be. Specifically:
Breathing -- usually during a monologue that's not going as well as I know it could, my attention is often automatically dr
Came across the website for the architect of 5th and Madison, Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine, and noticed they had designs for number of downtown/Belltown projects. Most were office space but they did have renderings for 114 Pike, the old Liberty Loan and Pawn building. The design includes 7 levels of office space and 5 residential levels of 1 or 2 homes per floor.
They also had renderings for 3rd and Battery which at one time was going to be the home for the relocated First United Methodist Church. However, the design is for a low-rise office and retail building. In any case, it’ll be a nice addition to this part of Belltown.
Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine also designed the IDX Tower and Millenium Tower.
