Wordless Wednesday: The insects, they like my hostas
I’m normally very wary of insects, especially ones with stingers on their backsides. The quest for a good shot seems to have deadened my instinct to flee, and instead I find myself pushing in as close as possible, ignoring the buzzing around me as the bees and wasps circle my head, moving from flower [...]

Edible Insects - As An Alternative Source Of Food

To this day, however, entomophagy is not a day to day event because of the unavailability of a regular supply of edible insects and prevalence [...]

      Attracting Beneficial Insects
The idea of attracting insects to your garden may seem bewildering, but there are beneficial insects that can actually control populations of the nuisance bugs we don’t want in our gardens. Nectar and pollen are needed during the life cycle of many of these insects, thus a variety of flowering plants will help attract and maintain their populations. Since most of the beneficial insects have shor

      Tropics insects 'face extinction'
Many tropical insects face extinction by the end of this century unless they adapt to the rising global temperatures predicted, US scientists have said.Researchers led by the University of Washington said insects in the tropics were much more sensitive to temperature changes than those elsewhere. In contrast, higher latitudes could experience an insect population boom. The scientists said changes in insect numbers could have secondary effects on plant pollination and food supplies. In the research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the US scientists studied how temperature changes between 1950 and 2000 had affected 38 species of insects. In the tropics, many species appear to be living at or near their thermal optimum, a temperature that lets them thriveJoshua Tewks

      Insects
About a week ago, I wrote a post about bird photography and mentioned that it is not the type of photography I usually do, but offered up a picture or two anyway. Along the same theme of photographic sub-specialties that I don't frequently undertake is insect photography. In a way, it is similar to bird photography in that those that devote a good portion of their time to photographing insects can come up with the most amazing images.......when you view them it can feel like you are entering a new and surreal universe. Though this image is far from generating that type of feel, it is one that I have liked ever since I took it on a workshop with John and Barbara Gerlach several years ago.Crab SpiderCopyright Howard GrillOne of the reasons that I like the image is that it demonstrates some o

Do It Naturally - Control Pest and Garden Insects Organically
If there are flowers and vegetables in your garden, you can be sure that there are pests as well. Especially if you will be eating vegetables from the garden, you won't want to use chemicals to kill the pests. Luckily, for every pest, you can use a natural means of repellent. Natural pest control is not only healthier for you, your family, your plants, and the environment - it is cheaper too.Approximately 136 million pounds of pesticides are used every year in the home lawn and gardens of North Americans. This is just for individuals, not even for farmers (who actually use 1/3 of the amount as the homeowners). Most contamination and poisonings that occur originate from single family homes. It is very important to use methods of pest control that are healthy to surrounding life and the envi

      Knees, insects and sprinklers...
It's still warm for autumn, the gardener is still in shorts and sandals much to the delight of the mosquitoes.Because the weather has been so dry the worms aren't showing themselves but there are plenty of spiders and insects around. Personally, I can never bring myself to eat spiders. They look up at you with those big eyes, all eight of them, and my heart melts. Besides who'd want to eat a spider when there's left-over ham sandwiches on the bird-table? There seems to be cats everywhere at the moment and I have to take extra care when on the ground. Thanks to our black plumage we blackbirds blend in perfectly with the shady areas of the garden .... or at least we would if whoever designed us hadn't given us bright orange beaks! It was obviously a cat lover. The dry spell means the gardener

Cyborg insects survive to adulthood, ensure our doom
Filed under: RobotsRemember those cyborg insects that seemed so much like a pipe dream just two short years ago? Yeah, those frackin' things have somehow survived into adulthood, and are closing in on being ready to infiltrate enemy camps and extract vital information. According to a recent update on the DARPA project, the insects -- which have "modified body structures and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) embedded" within -- have lasted into adulthood, and now those behind the endeavor are hoping to enable remote control of the bugs via "mechano-sensor activation" or something similar. Additionally, scientists are hoping to harness the energy emitted during locomotion to actually power the internal MEMS. Sure, as long as these critters can be swatted down with a newspaper, we're sol

      The twins' curiosity about Insects
"Hey, an insect, mummy......an insect!", the twins shouted. They had just spotted a bee which somehow flew and "stuck" outside a window panel. They are often very amazed and curious about this group of animal kingdom. Perhaps they had seen the daddy catching flies, bees, lizards etc. Then "shaking and dancing" the "cong cong" (insects) before he lets them had a free fall from the window.Anyway, this silly bee had really been "helpful". At least the twins got a chance to see a close up view of the eyes, body, wings and other parts of the bee, which they would otherwise not get to see at all.

Organic Gardening Means Befriending Beneficial Insects
Not all insects are pests. In fact, the majority of bugs living in your garden are helping your plants to grow in numerous, unseen ways. If you are having a problem with pests in your garden, you probably have an imbalance of fauna or an imbalance of soil nutrients. The more insects and other fauna in your garden, the less likelihood the “pesky” ones have of surviving. You will find that most insects eat those moths and maggots that are eating your plants. How biodiversity keeps your garden growing Biodiversity is the key to a healthy organic garden. Biodiversity means the presence of a diverse collection of plants and animals. Commercial mono-crops require obscene amounts of chemicals because they have an un-healthy level of diversity. In un-touched nature, pests and plant diseases do exist, but rarely get out of hand. This is because there is a natural system of checks an

Insects That Are Drawn To A Tropical Tree
What does one imagines when the two words tropical tree are in conjunction with each other? A tropical tree is a beautiful remembrance of paradise. Tropical trees litter the shorelines of beaches near and far. The tropical tree is a symbol of Southern California, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and other tropical islands. One can not gaze at a brochure promising paradise without coming across one or two tropical trees.A tropical tree adds a hint of exotic charm to its external environment. Many tropical trees are the center of attention and will therefore compete with other plants. This is especially true in reference to palm trees. AS tropical tree is not only found on a tropical island or in a tropical area but also in a rainforest. A rainforest is known as a tropical rainforest. The tropical rainforest is home to hundreds of species of tropical trees and plants. Unfortunately, there are a number of insects that can harm a tropical tree. One insect that has many different types of species,

      Insects
I have been bothered with earwigs the last few months. They climb into my window, and I find out that are in my apartment, when I am sitting on my couch and they climb on me and pinch me somewhere on my body. I HATE insects. But anyway, you would think that as I live in the Nordic countries, I should be safe from having bugs in my apartment, but it´s not true, this is not the first time I have had uninvited guests in my home.....In my last apartment, when I was still living in Helsinki I had a problem with flys. During about two weeks in september, my apartment was invided by flys. I don´t know where they came from, but I killed around 20 flys each and every day. It was DISGUSTING! Luckily it was just for a short period of time. But something that is even worse than ordinary flies are bananaflies...I was living with a group of girls who were VERY bad at cleaning and doing the dishes. I was away for a week or something and when I come back the whole kitchen has been invaded by bananafli

      insects, they hate me
Last weekend I was sitting in the back garden of my parents' house. The flowers planted and tendered by my mother were myriad; the lawn nurtured by my father recently cut; the sun a colossal burning ball of hydrogen, helium, and other trace elements, in hat fashion. The result: lots of insects.I was wearing a pale blue shirt with a lazy but tactile pattern, and it has been remarked upon by at least one lady (yes, TK Maxx is an emporium for kings). Mother was sitting beside me on the patio, going on about swans or something, while father, standing aside a sycamore tree at the foot of the garden, was describing, in mime, how he had scared off the local squirrel with a power hose. One of the old man's Benson & Hedges was burning in the table ashtray. And then mother stopped talking about swans: I, she informed me, was covered in insects. The fucking things were everywhere. And I'm not even sure what they were. Things that you forget exist when you move to London and don't leave for

The region of Languedoc Roussillon is one of the most fascinating areas in France. It borders the Mediterranean sea to the east and the Pyrenees mountains to the south. It benefits from an exceptional climate and is rich in wildlife,(which has pleased me no end). There are many historical ancient towns together with cathedrals , chateaux and castles notably the famous mountain fortresses popularly known as Cathar Castles.Chateau Montsegur is one of these mountain fortresses and as you can see from the picture it is in an amazing location and it is difficult to imagine how the materials to build it would have been taken up. The Chateau is also famous as being the site in 1244 where several hundred Cathars were burned alive. People still leave flowers there. I took the picture from the road that passes by the chateau and whilst doing so I noticed a pink flower that looked interesting next to a large log in a meadow. I went over to have a look. On this log were all sorts of insects, crick

Hex Bugs – Mini Robot Insects
These are going to be huge, there’s no doubt about it. And, just like many of the ‘classic’ toys of the past the shops will be full of fathers buying these for their children – who’ll not get a look in once they are unpackaged. Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, the Hex Bugs are mini robot insects that mimic real insects by scuttling around and will even avoid obstacles of their own accord. Not only that, but they’ll even abruptly change direction in the event of hearing loud, sudden sounds – such as hand clapping. The Hex Bugs are powered by two button cell batteries and come in a range of vibrant colours and reviews on the Radio Shack website, where the Hex Bugs retail for a mere $9.99, are extremely positive. Speaking Of Insects
Look at this little creature, or should I say rather large insect in the realm of insects. They emerged here in southern Wisconsin about three weeks ago after spending 17 years as a larvae underground eating roots. There's masses in the Chicago area and I don't have any here but just about 7 miles straight south in Lake Geneva there's tons. The 17 year cicada. Annoying but harmless and from what I understand rather tasty. Kind of almond like. Eeewwww! They make an erie sound and in unison too. They're cool looking in their own right with red beady eyes. I guess they're an Eastern thing. I find them fascinating. And when I say masses, I'm talking every square inch. They're about done now. They'll mate and lay their eggs and the larvae will stay underground for another 17 years. Why ? They must have been around for more than centuries. I wonder if there's any cicada fossils. The Eocene Epoch: Ancient insects used advanced camouflage
A fossil of a leaf-imitating insect from 47 million years ago bears a striking resemblance to the mimickers of today. The discovery represents the first fossil of a leaf insect (Eophyllium messelensis), and also shows that leaf imitation is an ancient and successful evolutionary strategy that has been conserved over a relatively long period of time. Scientists led by Sonja Wedmann (homepage) of the Institute of Paleontology in Bonn, Germany, unearthed the remains at a well-known fossil site called Messel*, in Hessen, Germany. The 2.4-inch-long insect had physical characteristics similar to the oblong leaves of trees living there at the time, including Myrtle trees, legumes, such as alfalfa, and Laurel trees.
