      Dealing with Injuries
Injuries are very real obstacles for fitness enthusiasts and athletes.  Most of the time, we can prevent them by warming up before exercise, executing proper form during our workouts, and cooling down afterwards.  But try as we might to avoid them, injuries sometimes do occur.  You may remember learning about the acronym RICE.  This is the general rule of thumb for initial treatment of injuries.  It stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Too often, people implement the RICE technique, and do nothing further.   A doctor needs to be consulted in order to determine the extent of the injury.

Study: Higher Pitching Mounds May Lead to More Arm Injuries for Pitchers
A study led by William Raasch, an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, has found that higher pitching mounds place more stress on the arm and shoulder of a pitcher and increases their risk of injury. The researchers say that the height difference changes the point in the pitching action at which the foot lands. Standard 10-inch mounds subject the shoulder to increased superior shear and adduction torque compared to flat ground."Nolan Ryan, who played major league baseball for 27 years, often threw pitches more than 100 mph, even past the age of 40, and he liked to throw on flat ground in his waning years. I think others might follow his lead," said Dr Raasch.Source: Sciencedaily.com

Whiplash Injuries Are Difficult To Prove In Court

The whiplash injury is probably the most difficult and risky case to pursue in court.  Often times the imaging (X-ray, MRI, CT, etc.) will be "normal."  The only "evidence" of injury is the person's own subjective complaints, and perhaps the "soft" examination findings of the treating physicians.  Many times the only physician will be a chiropractor or massage therapist.  Insuran

Injury Prevention For Parents: How To Prevent Injuries to Your Kids
By: Steve Mallard The first step to preventing injuries to your child is to take general preventative measures. For instance, to prevent your child from falling out of your house’s windows, install guards on all windows higher than the first floor. In addition, children must never be unattended in or near a bathtub, swimming pool, ocean, or any other body of water. Not only water, but also its nemesis—fire, can pose a threat to children. Therefore, smoke detectors should be tested once each month, and fresh batteries placed in them a minimum of once every year. Accidents happen. To prepare for emergencies in your home, post emergency numbers nearby your phones, and keep stocks of first aid supplies in your home. To prevent the likelihood that you would need to phone those emergency numbers, consider buying child safety products from a child safety store. In addition to taking preventative steps to safeguard your child, you can also keep dangerous objects away from him or her. Every

      Common Aerobic Injuries
In the challenging sport of aerobics, injuries are common and often involve the foot, ankle and lower leg. The knee and back can also be involved. Medical professionals agree that most injuries occur from using improper footwear, inappropriate surfaces, poorly chosen movements, too fast tempos and simple overuse injuries. If you are attending a high impact class and the impact is too much bring it down a bit for some low impact segments. If the instructor does any movements that cause you pain, first check your form and if that doesn’t help modify or choose another movement. Unfortunately, tempos are being conducted way too fast in most aerobics classes. If you find yourself shortening your steps, not going through the full range of motion or feel like you might trip switch to a slower class. The surface you train on is very important. The best aerobic’s surface is a hardwood suspended floor which still has a little give to it. There are poured urethane gym floors that a

Of course, most people know that a drunk driver who causes injury or death can be sued for this unlawful conduct. But, did you know that a passenger who knowingly rides with an intoxicated person can be held responsible for the passenger's own injuries or death arising from a drunk driving accident? Yes, it's true. A case decided last October by the Washington Court of Appeals affirmed a jury's decision to hold a passenger 35% responsible for her own injuries after accepting a ride from a driver she knew to have consumed alcohol earlier in the evening. In the case of Hickly v. Bare, 135 Wn. App. 676 (October 2006), the driver admitted to consuming at least

UEFA Talk Out Of Their Arsenal’s And More Injuries
Arsene will take a backseat for the Steaua match with an automatic one match touchline ban following on from his contretemps with the fourth official on Tuesday evening. The prospect of a further ban remains undiminished with UEFA promising to investigate. Arsene claimed he could not get away from the dugout because access to the stands was blocked which will probably cut no ice with the Gnomes of Nyon. As of yet, it is undecided whether or not the laundry will be collected on the day of the Steaua game but it would be of no surprise if the UEFA delegates turned up with a pitchfork to stab into the piles of towels and kits, just to ensure that no strokes are pulled on them. Witchfinder General, William Galliard, has said that the fact that Arsene could not reach the seats is no excuse and he should have gone down the tunnel. The Usual International Break - England Cock It Up And Arsenal Suffer A Few Injuries
There have been many words written about the debacle of England’s qualifying campaign for Euro2008. No doubt the sound of hatches being battened down at Arsenal will be heard for a while for once the braying sheep of the media have finished with the slashing of their knives into McClaren’s back, the sabre rattling will begin about how foreign players have caused the ruination of English football. The causes of England’s problems are so widespread that the scattergun approach taken with media pot-shots is always going to hit a target. Players who are technically inept, unable to pass their way on anything less than the pristine surfaces of the Premier League, treating the ball as an enemy. Coaches who are devoid of tactical knowledge and do not even have a Plan A, let alone a B or C. Perhaps the malaise that has set about the native footballers of these shores is best summed up by James Dodson in yesterday’s Fiver, A retractable roof that doesn’t shut. A £7

Review of PhysioRoom.com - Sports Injuries Info and Online Shop
I’m glad that I’ve been given the opportunity to review PhysioRoom.com because I really like the site. To give you a brief background of the company, they first started in 2000 to provide information about sports injuries in a format that we can all understand. It wasn’t until 2003 that they opened an online shop selling a variety of products relating to fitness. One of them being Swiss Balls… Swiss Balls Just for Girls? When I used to go to a gym one of the most popular products was the Swiss Ball. If you’re a “macho” kind of a guy you might think that they’re just for girls; believe me, they’re not! My Mum’s personal trainer used to be a trainer in the Army said that they make you’re body work harder and really strengthen your core muscles (that’s the muscles in your stomach and back). Major Injuries - Week 9
Several major injuries occurred in Week 9. Let's take a closer look. Chad Johnson: Ocho Cinco was carried off on a stretcher after going across the middle late and hitting his head hard on the ground. Johnson reportedly had movement in his arms and legs. A CT scan on his neck came back negative, so that is good news. He made the Bengals' flight home, so this doesn't appear to be anything overly

Protecting Yourself from Injuries during Soccer Training
By: Elmo Kandel It has been proven that a person who participates in a sports team is healthier - both mentally and physically. There are many reasons for this. One of the main reasons is that a person is motivated and encouraged when they engage in various sports activities. Each person that plays in a sport is instructed on the proper methods of playing as part of a team. Furthermore, engaging in sports is fun and exciting for all people. A person is introduced to a lot of exercises that contribute to their overall health. If you are participating in soccer training, it is important to understand how to protect yourself from injuries. Prior to engaging in soccer training exercises, it is essential to participate in a warm up regime. If you attempt to go out into the soccer field during soccer training and perform different activities, such as drills and playing the game, before you warm up your muscles, you stand a greater risk of becoming injured. Wheel Dollies Can Reduce Work Related Injuries.
By: Cooper MillerThese days, health and safety in the workplace is one of the most important considerations for any employer, no matter what their field. A modern workshop is no different, and wherever possible, it is important to minimize the exposure of staff and technicians to any potentially physically harmful experience. One key area where a workshop owner needs to concentrate on in making the environment safer for all staff is in the movement of unwieldy items like tires and wheels, where the correct tools, wheel dollies are an often overlooked part of any workshops inventory of tools. One reason why wheel dollies are so often overlooked by mechanics is that the conventional wisdom regarding wheels is that they can easily be rolled from one place to another as required. This means that the garage owner can save money on buying a specialized tool such as a wheel dolly in order to carry out the task.Of course, the big problem with simply rolling a wheel from storage to the area wher

      Injuries For Sunday’s Game
Jets tight end Chris Baker will not play Sunday against the Bengals and is out with a back injury. Baker, who has 12 catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns, was limited in practice all week and didn’t accompany the team to Cincinnati. It was unclear when Baker was hurt, and it’s against the Jets’ policy to discuss injuries. Expect Sean Ryan and first-year tight end Joe Kowalewski to see time at tight end with Ryan getting the start. Also for the Jets, Jets starting quarterback Chad Pennington is questionable for Sunday’s game as his ankle injury that occurred in week 2 is still bothering him. …Injury or not, you have got to believe Chad is on a very short leash this week, but I have been saying this and expecting him to be on a short leash for the past two or three weeks and Mangini still comes out after the games and announces Chad as next week’s starter without hesitation… In Bengals injury news, runningback Rudi Johnson (hamstring) is do

Car Accident Injuries - Handling the Accident Scene
By: Bradley Cars are the most visible signs of modernity in an otherwise ancient world. No urban environment would be complete without these four-wheeled machines. Most people see them as a convenience, enabling them to get from point A to point B without having to endure the crowds the rush hours associated with public transportation. However, as cars become more and more available, roads become more and more congested. As the congestion worsens, it is inevitable that car accidents occur and people get hurt. Statistically speaking, car accidents have been occurring with increased frequency over the past decade. The statistics also show that there are a number of injuries that have become common to most car accidents during that period.Head and neck injuries are listed as being typical to a car accident. The face, in particular, can suffer laceration and cutting from shattered glass or shrapnel generated by the impact. Dental injuries are also possible, particularly for people in the d

      Top 10 Gardening Injuries
A special thanks to Julie from the Human Flower Project who pointed out this tasty little morsel floating around cyberspace. It's a list of Britian's top 10 injuries that occurred in the garden last year. Here they are; 1. Lawn mowers (6500 accidents each year) 2. Flower pots (5300) 3. Secateurs and pruners (4400) 4. Spades (3600) 5. Electric hedge trimmers (3100) 6. Plant tubs and troughs (2800) 7. Shears (2100) 8. Garden forks (2000) 9. Hoses and sprinklers (1900) 10. Garden canes and sticks (1800). While I certainly can understand the mowers, secateurs, hedge trimmers and shears I'm a little lost for how those flower pots and plant tubs hurt so many people. Perhaps British gardeners are just a little more aggressive than others around the globe. Maybe the rest of us aren't gardening hard enough? So, how does one injure themselves with a flower pot? The mind escalates into some brain-bending gymnastics when you try to contemplate some different scenarios where a flower pot c

Tight end L.J. Smith has been ruled out for Sunday night's game as he continues his recovery from last Friday's groin surgery.Meanwhile, Westbrook (abdominal strain), free safety Brian Dawkins (neck stinger), cornerback Lito Sheppard (knee) and left tackle William Thomas (knee) all remain day-to-day with their respective injuries, although Reid said they are all "improving."Some more than others."It's not by big strides that he's getting better, but he is making improvement," Reid said of Westbrook. "It was important a day or two after the game that he wasn't regressing at all."Westbrook missed all but one practice last week due to a knee strain, but that didn't limit h

      Avoid Injuries With Proper Technique
Stretching is not complicated. Then again, It is not as simple as leaning one way and reaching another. Of you do a stretching maneuver wrong, you wont get all of its benefits or, worse, you could injure yourself. So learn the right way to lean and reach.Start by knowing when to do it. Remember stretching is a form of exercise all to itself. So for its own sake, devote at least three times a week to only stretching. If you have a particularly tense or tight part of the body, stretch it every day or even twice a day.On top of that, stretch along with your daily walk, your tennis match, or your dancing session. Stretching complements every fitness activity under the sun. it is especially important if you are active in physical activities like strength training or cardio. These exercises naturally tighten up your muscles. Stretching counters that by lengthening them. Whatever activity you are involved in; loosen up lightly before you do it. Then stretch thoroughly afterward. You can skip

Brain Injuries and Iraq War Vets
The U.S. Army is testing the brains of troops to be newly deployed in Iraq to help them "baseline" a soldier's cognitive abilities and thus make it easier to diagnose and treat possible head injuries incurred later while stationed in Iraq.  The program is mandatory at the 101st Airborne Division in Kentucky and will spread elsewhere in the coming months.  This program is not as it appears. First, some background.  Traumatic brain injury, or "TBI" is one of the worst and most common traumas coming out of Iraq, earning it the title of "signature injury" with an estimated one in five expected to come back with some form of brain injury.  Symptoms are difficult to pinpoint for the patient and evaluation and testing is challenging for doctors.  In fact, sometimes there are no symptoms initially, yet the damage is very severe nonetheless.   For the first time, there are more head injuries than abdominal injuries. R.I.C.E For Injuries
If you suffer from a sports related injury, use R.I.C.E. The term stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Rest - Take a break from exercise or any type of movement that may stress the injured area. A minor injury should be rested for one or two days, while more severe injuries may need longer. Ice - Ice the affected area. Icing reduces pain, limits swelling and bleeding, and encourages rapid healing. Wrap ice in a towel to avoid direct contact with the skin. Compress - Compress the injury with a stretch bandage. Make sure not to wrap it too tight, just enough to support the injured area comfortably. Elevate - Elevate the limb. If possible, try to keep the injured part above the level of the heart. At the very least, try to keep it higher than the hips. This helps limit swelling and also prevents movement of the area that is injured.

Arsenal 1 - Man City 0. More injuries.
An 80th minute strike from Cesc Fabregas ensured Arsenal a home win over Manchester City. Earlier Robin Van Persie missed a penalty after Hleb was brought down in the box by Micah Richards. The match was in many ways a reflection of our last season performances at the Emirates, only difference being a clean sheet for Arsenal. As usual Arsenal created many chances, but none of them were taken. But most of the credit should go to City defense, which stood up and fought hard against the attacks which came one after the another. As expected Arsenal started with a 4-4-2. But there were surprises in the starting line up as Gilberto started at center back after Senderos suffered an injury just before the game. So it was Clichy, Toure, Gilberto and Sagna at the back and Hleb, Fabregas, Flamini and Rosicky in the midfield, while Van Persie and Adebayor played upfront. An injury (or not) to Lehmann meant Almunia started infront of goal. City played some line up which included Mpenza, Elano and Pet

      Overuse Injuries & Guitar
By Kathy Unruh It’s a sad fact that overuse injuries tend to be fairly common among guitar players. This problem, which is also known as Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, can become so painful that a musician may lose their ability to play the instrument with the same skill they once had. I’m sorry to say that I tell you this from personal experience.Several years ago I developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in my left wrist. I didn’t really know about overuse injuries at the time, I only knew that my fingers would go numb whenever I played guitar for an extended period. It eventually got so bad that my whole arm, from elbow to wrist, would start tingling and hurt whenever I played. Then one day I was asked to participate in a fund raising concert. I decided to play some of my Classical Guitar Favorites for the show; putting the easiest ones first and the more difficult pieces toward the end. This would give my fingers a chance to warm up, or so I thought. The pe

My knee is still injured and not getting better. It's not that painful, but it makes the rest of me sore bone tired. And when I'm tired, I eat, especially when you still bowls of nuts, dried fruit and candy in front of me at training sessions (for my moms club) and at bunco with the girls. I gained two pounds this week. Ugh. I did work out five days, but couldn't take yoga and Pilates. And I couldn't work out as hard either - my leg muscles are too stiff. Plus I believe my lactose intolerance is coming back. The venti latte with skim milk from Starbucks gave me a raging tummy ache. And all that lime berry triffle at both my dinner parties (I entertained twice this weekend at my home) didn't help matters either...as did the sangria. Sigh.
