Yeast Infections & Menopause - Critical Tips to Cure and Prevent Them
Caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a fungus, yeast infections are the most common of all vaginal infections. Yeast infections are not sexually transmitted and are often caused by menopause. Of all vaginal infections, yeast infections are one of the main symptoms of menopause, caused by the fluctuating hormones leading to bacteria in the vagina going out of control. Baths, excess moisture in the vagina, or damp or tight clothes may lead to yeast infections. The signs of yeast infection during menopause, as well as otherwise, are: inflammation, continued itching and irritation, pain during intercourse, frequent urination, and a thick, white discharge from your vagina. With the drop of estrogen levels during menopause, the walls of your vagina become thinner and weak. During inte

Heal Ear Infections and Kill Dreaded Ear Mites with this Proven Holistic Formula

Not too long ago, other then placing cotton in their ears during maintenance baths, I didn't know.My friends dog Ace was plagued with ear infections and she agreed to allow me to test some holistic products on him. I bought a product that's base was made from tea tree oil. I was familiar with tea tree oil because I bathe many of my canine clients with a tea tree oil shampoo, when their skin is dry or if they are suffering with a minor skin irritation. When the product arrived, we put 7 drops in each of Ace's ears and massaged them a few seconds. Yet after 30 years in the nutrition field, we have found very few of these to be effective.Research shows that women, following yeast diets and candida diets, obtain some relief from their symptoms, yet as soon as they go off the restricted diet, their yeast infection and candida symptoms return almost immediately. The only substance ever shown to actually destroy the candida and yeast organism on contact is oxygen. Oral oxygen has proven to be very effective in eliminating yeast infections and candida. Antibiotics may not aid sinus infections
Just in time for runny nose season, new research suggests routine sinus infections aren’t really helped by antibiotics and other medicine that’s often prescribed. In the British study, people suffering from facial pain and a runny nose with greenish or yellowish mucous generally improved within about two weeks — whether they took the standard antibiotic amoxicillin, steroid nose spray or fake medicine. The results, based on patients’ reporting whether their symptoms had improved, echo previous findings in children. Antibiotics, particularly the penicillin-like drug amoxicillin, are among the most commonly prescribed medicines for sinus infections. Steroid sprays sometimes are used, but the study found they also were no better than dummy drugs, although they appeared to provide some relief for patients with only minor symptoms. The study should lead to a “reconsideration of antibiotic use for acute sinusitis. The current view that antibiotics are effective can

How to Treat Fungal Nail Infections Naturally
Let’s face it, nail fungus probably isn’t one of the nicest health topics to talk about but it is certainly one which affects a lot of people. The condition is caused by micro-organisms called Dermatophytes. It lives on the nail bed and eats the keratin which is the protein in your nail. Normally it will start at the end of the nail and work its way down to the base if left untreated. The end result is a nail which is thick and deformed and in some cases can affect the surrounding skin. Typically the big toe is affect first, spreading to the other toes later. What Causes Fungal Nail Infection? Dermatophytes love warm and moist conditions such as sweaty socks and shoes. Buy cotton socks instead of nylon and used an anti-fugal powder if you suffer from sweaty feet. Sometimes the fungus can infect the nail via the skin. This can happen due to an ingrown toe nail or damage to the nail. If you have circulation problems, diabetes or HIV you have an increased chance of inf

Sunshine Decreases Your Chance to Develop Infections
A study of more than 2,000 women has found those with higher vitamin D levels showed fewer aging-related changes in their DNA. A second study, examining almost 1,000 patients in West Africa, showed that low vitamin D levels are common among tuberculosis (TB) patients. Lack of vitamin D has been linked in previous studies to multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other diseases.Cells have built-in DNA clocks, known as telomeres. Measuring the length of these strands of DNA is one way of examining the aging process at a cellular level.Women with higher levels of vitamin D are more likely to have longer telomeres, and vice versa. This means that people with higher levels of vitamin D may actually age more slowly than people with lower levels of vitamin D. No wonder vitamin D has a protective effect on so many diseases, ranging from MS and TB to heart disease and cancer -- it keeps your body young!

Newly described proteins in drug-resistant strains of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium attract and then destroy protective human white blood cells—a key process ensuring that S. aureus survives and causes severe disease, according to scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.S. aureus disease is a global public health concern because some strains, including community-associated methicillin resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA), have developed resistance to existing antibiotics. The NIAID scientists hope to use this finding to advance development of new therapeutic treatments. In a study published online in Nature Medicine, Michael Otto, Ph.D., and his colleagues at NIAID’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) describe how novel members of the phenol-soluble modulin (PSM) protein family help determine disease severity and eliminate immune defense mechanisms against CA-MRSA.“This elegant work helps reveal the c

      Herpes Simplex Virus Infections
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) affects more than one-third of the world’s population. HSV exists as types 1 and 2, which have affinities for different body sites. Ninety percent of infections caused by HSV-2 are genital, and 90 percent of those caused by HSV-1 are oral. Diagnosis The diagnosis of genital HSV infection may be made clinically, but laboratory confirmation is recommended in patients presenting with primary or suspected recurrent infection. The gold standard of diagnosis is viral isolation by tissue culture, although this process can take as long as four to five days, and the sensitivity rate is only 70 to 80 percent. Viral culture is still the diagnostic test of choice for HSV skin infections. Polymerase chain reaction enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (PCR-ELISA) is extremely sensitive (96 percent) and specific (99 percent) but expensive. For this reason, it is not used for the diagnosis of skin lesions but is the test of choice for diagnosing HSV encephalitis. Antivira

Researchers identify viruses linked to obesity in humans, animalsAre a sedentary lifestyle and a high-calorie diet, by themselves, to blame for the mushrooming obesity rate in the U.S.?That question has led some researchers to ask whether there might be other causes for this serious problem. In the October issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researcher Richard Atkinson, M.D., says that there is a growing body of evidence demonstrating that viruses may play a role in causing obesity in humans.“The cause of obesity is not a secret -- if you consume more calories than you burn in daily activity, you gain weight. What is interesting is that much of the obesity epidemic cannot be explained just by Americans eating more and exercising less. The heightened alarm comes in response to a federal report indicating that the bacteria, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, are responsible for more deaths in the United States each year than AIDS.MRSA (pronounced MEER-suh) is a strain of staph bacteria that does not respond to penicillin or related antibiotics, though it can be treated with other drugs. The infection can be spread by sharing items, like a towel or a piece of sports equipment that has been used by an infected person, or through skin-to-skin contact with an open wound.Sources:The New York Times October 19, 2007

      LOWER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS
The lower respiratory tract is the lungs, and so it is much more serious if you get an infection in the LRT. An infection here is called pneumonia. This disease has to be treated. There are a few ways of classifying pneumonia. You can classify it according to where it was acquired, so you would have: Hospital acquired for example P. aeruginosa, which is found in compromised hosts. Community acquired for example S. pneumoniae Occupation acquired Chlamidia psittachi, which is transmitted from parrots and so is found in people who handle parrots. While the above is an ok way to classify pneumonias, a better way is to classify them based on clinical manifestation because that helps you treat the disease better. There are still three categories: Acute : we've already heard about S. aureus and Enterobacteria which can cause pneumonia,

Staph Infections Reported at Schools Across the Country
RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 17 — A high school student hospitalized for more than a week with an antibiotic-resistant staph infection died on Monday, as schools across the country were reporting outbreaks of staph infections, including the antibiotic-resistant strain. The student, Ashton Bonds, 17, was a senior at Staunton River High School in Moneta, Va., and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, was diagnosed in him, his mother said.Officials shut down all 22 schools in Bedford County for cleaning today in an effort to keep the illness from spreading, after students at Staunton River organized a protest overnight Monday, using text messages and social networking sites. On Tuesday, the student organizers led the Bedford County schools superintendent, James Blevins, on a tour of the Staunton River school to show him the state of its sanitation, particularly in its locker rooms.Mr. Blevins said at a news conference today that the high school would be cleaned today by a commerci

Yeast Infections - Natural Problem With a Natural Cure
By: Sarah Rhodes Treatment can last anywhere from one to 14 days. You will usually feel relief from the symptoms within a few days of beginning your treatment. However, you should complete the entire course of treatment even if your symptoms subside. The course is necessary to be sure the infection has been completely cured.Almost 15% of people with weakened immune systems develop a systemic illness caused by Candida. These infections enter into the bloodstream through breakdowns or cuts in the skin or mucous membranes. Candidal organisms may build up in an area because of frequent use of strong antibiotics, which kill the bacteria that normally keep it under control.Vaginal yeast infections occur when new yeast is introduced into the vaginal area, or when there is an increase in the quantity of yeast already present in the vagina relative to the quantity of normal bacteria. For example, when the normal, protective bacteria are eradicated by antibiotics (taken to treat a urinary tract,

      _______ Dealing with virus infections_______
First, keep in mind "Nick's First Law of Computer Virus Complaints": "Just because your computer is acting strangely or one of your programs doesn't work right, this does NOT mean that your computer has a virus."1. If you haven't used a good, up-to-date anti-virus program on your computer, do that first. Many problems blamed on viruses are actually caused by software configuration errors or other problems that have nothing to do with a virus.2. If you do get infected by a virus, follow the directions in your anti-virus program for cleaning it. If you have backup copies of the infected files, use those to restore the files. Check the files you restore to make sure your backups weren't infected.3. For assistance, check the web site and support services for your anti-virus software.4. The "[alt.comp.virus]includes an excellent section on initial steps for dealing with a suspected virus infection.Note: in general, drastic measures such as formatting your hard drive orusing FDI

_______ Some general tips on avoiding virus infections_______
      1. Install anti-virus software from a well-known, reputable company,UPDATE it regularly, and USE it regularly.New viruses come out every single day; an a-v program that hasn't beenupdated for several months will not provide much protection against currentviruses.2. In addition to scanning for viruses on a regular basis, install an 'onaccess' scanner (included in most good a-v software packages) and configureit to start automatically each time you boot your system. This will protectyour system by checking for viruses each time your computer accesses anexecutable file.3. Virus scan any new programs or other files that may contain executablecode before you run or open them, no matter where they come from. Therehave been cases of commercially distributed floppy disks and CD-ROMsspreading virus infections.4. Anti-virus programs aren't very good at detecting Trojan horseprograms, so be extremely careful about opening binary files and Word/Exceldocuments from unknown or 'dubious'

      yeast infections
WHAT IS IT?Yeast is a fungus scientifically referred to as Candida. There are more than 20 species of Candida, the most common being Candida albicans. Yeast is commonly present on normal human skin and in areas of moisture, such as the mouth and vagina. In fact, up to 20% of women normally carry yeast in the vaginal area.Candidiasis is the second most common cause of vaginal irritation, or vaginitis, and can also occur on the male genitals. In immunocompromised patients, the Candida infection can involve the esophagus and can become systemic, causing a much more serious condition: fungemia.Children, mostly between the ages of 3 and 9 years, can be affected by chronic mouth yeast infections, normally seen around the mouth as white patches. However, this is not a common condition.Yeast infections that return may be a sign of more serious diseases such as diabetes, leukemia, or AIDS.

Antibiotic Used To Treat Fungal Infections Also Kills Cancer Cells, Research Suggests
Due to defects in chromosomal distribution, a majority of tumor cells would not be able to survive were it not for a trick that cancer cells have developed to avoid this chaos in the genetic material. Scientists of the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) have discovered that the antibiotic griseofulvin counteracts this tactic of tumors and, thus, forces cancer cells into cell death. NaN The two centrosomes are responsible for proper cell division: It is here that the mitotic spindle made of protein fibers latches onto in order to correctly divide the freshly duplicated set of chromosomes among the two newly forming daughter cells. However, cancer cells often have more than two centrosomes. As a result, their mitotic spindle does not have the normal spindle structure with two poles; dysfunctional multipolar structures are formed instead. These malformed spindles distribute chromosomes completely at random so that daughter cells are usually not viable.

      Urinary Tract Infections
What is a UTI? A UTI (urinary tract infection) is the result of bacteria getting forced up the urethra and into the bladder, causing an infection to grow. There are many ways that this can occur, the most common of which is during intercourse where there is a lot of friction on the woman’s urethra. Though they are more common in women, men can get UTIs too. They are very common and easily treatable with little pain if they are caught early enough. However, if left untreated, UTIs can reach the kidneys and uterus and cause severe, painful and damaging infections. What are the symptoms? Symptoms vary from very mild to extremely uncomfortable depending on how long you wait to seek treatment. Early on the most obvious symptoms are: urinating more frequently than usual stinging or burning sensation when urinating feeling of having to urinate, but not being able to cloudy urine, or possible traces of blood in urine foul odour to urine soreness in the lower back and pelvic areas If you

      Taking zinc reduces infections...really?
Its yet to be proven, but a recent study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicated that it just might be so, at least in older people.Michigan researchers gave 24 middle-aged and older adults (men and women, 55 - 87 years old) 45mg zinc daily for one year. A control group of 25 received a placebo.During the study period, study subjects were examined to see how often they got sick. Blood levels of zinc and other immune system markers were also evaluated. Results showed that those people who received zinc supplementation had significantly fewer infections than those who received the placebo. The blood tests taken halfway through the study period showed lower levels of inflammation and oxidative stress, leading researchers to the conclusion that the zinc provided anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that ultimately may help decrease infection as people age.Interesting. Do any of you take supplemental zinc? What do you think about these findings?

Itchy, itchy, itchy: Antifungals and the treatment of yeast infections
Being a dude, I thank my lucky stars on a daily basis that I am not prone to fungus-type infestations of my nether regions. Let's hear it for external genitalia! A woman's special area, like many other parts of the human body, is inhabited by both bacteria and fungi. These microbes are usually just chilling out, growing slowly and not bringing any attention to themselves. A yeast infection occurs when Candida albicans, a yeast (which is a type of fungus), is given the opportunity to take over downstairs due to a change in the local environment, which can be caused by a number of things including antibiotics, pregnancy, and a weakened immune system. Candida sets up shop in the most holy of holies, and before you know it, you've got vaginal candidiasis (a yeast infection)! And just so you know, I plan to see how long I can go in this post without mentioning the actual anatomical terms for 'womanly bits'. I consider this to be an exercise in puritan restraint. And euphemisms are fun!

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), baby ear infections
My son ended up having Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It was just terrible. You never knew when he was going to toss up what he had just eaten. Then when he did, he had to be refed. He tends to be a slow eater too, even now as a toddler he pokes, so it was a pain in the butt. His doctor recommended adding 2tbs of rice cereal to his breastmilk to help thicken it. I think it helped some, but it mainly just gave him some extra calories, which being a preemie, he needed. Since I formula fed twice a day, his doctor also recommended Enfamil A.R. Lipil. It's a thicker formula designed for babies with reflux. It also seemed to help with his reflux. To reduce the amount of vomiting, I would also burp my son every couple of ounces. If I didn't, the chances he would burp up what he had just eaten increased. At one point, I also fed him less, more frequently. He's always been on a schedule, even now as a toddler. As a baby, he would eat every 3 hours, so I tried feeding him every 2 1/2

Cubist Pharmaceuticals Wages War Against Bacterial Infections
By Yahoo's definition, Cubist Pharmaceuticals (CBST) is a biopharmaceutical company, engages in the research, development, and commercialization of pharmaceutical products for the acute care and anti-infective markets. In other words, Cubist develops anti-biotic drugs to fend bacteria that resist existing anti-bacterial medicine. In U.S. alone, almost 2 million people get bacterial infections every year, of which almost 5% succumb to the infections. Bacterial infections are a relatively smaller focus for biotechs and drug companies, who usually look to develop blockbusters that can rake in a few billion rather than the millions that Cubist is looking to bring in with their focus on the abandoned market of anti-biotics. Cubicin is the first major anti-biotic in over 13 years and is the most successful one of its kind ever, bringing in $350 million in revenue so far.On the flip side, CBST’s earnings have not always yielded the result investors have hoped for. Ear Infections Are Painful!
Learn how to treat ear infections in dogs, and how to keep a dog’s ears clean. by Sheri Huttner In my grooming shop, I come into contact with many, many dogs. Not a day goes by where I don’t see at least one dog with an ear infection. The majority of times, the infections are found in “drop ear” dogs such as Poodles, Spaniels, and Bichons. I rarely see ear infections in dogs with perky, erect ears such as Yorkies, Chihuahuas, and Scotties. The reason for this is that air does not circulate into the ears of drop-ear dogs. Also, in long-haired dogs, hair grows inside the ears, and when it accumulates, even less air gets in. The ears become a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. The signs of an ear infection are usually very obvious. An accumulation of brown debris is a sure sign that something is wrong. The debris will be accompanied by a strong, foul odor; another sure sign of infection, even if you don’t see any debris. Sometimes the ear leather (the un
