A KEY Indonesian parliamentary committee has recommended an ally of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as the nation's next armed forces chief, all but assuring his appointment, its head said on Thursday. General Djoko Santoso, who is currently head of the army, was endorsed by the commission responsible for military affairs after a 12-hour grilling.General Santoso's relationship with Mr Yudhoyono, who nominated him and who is himself a retired army lieutenant general, may ensure the president receives military backing if he runs for a second five-year term in elections slated for 2009. Kusnanto Anggoro, an observer of political and military affairs with the Centre for Strategic and International Studies think-tank, said General Susanto was an able candidate, though his commitment to reform remained unknown. 'What is clear is that he can work together with the president well, as they both come from the same background and have worked together in the past.

Armed pirates attacked a Malaysian barge in the Malacca Strait and kidnapped two Indonesian crew, in the first high sea abduction in the busy waterway in over two years, a global maritime watchdog said Tuesday. The incident late Monday marked the third pirate attack in the strait this year, but the first since July 2005 in which ship crew were kidnapped, said Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur. The barge was carrying steel billets from Malaysia's northern state of Penang to Belawan in Indonesia, Choong said, when it was raided by some 10 gun-toting pirates. They destroyed all communication equipment on board before fleeing with the ship master and chief engineer, both Indonesians, he said. Another six Indonesian crew were unharmed, he said, adding that the vessel is now in Belawan for investigation.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com
21 June 2007 (Jakarta Post) - Have you visited your museum lately? If you’re in Indonesia, you’ll have no less than the president exhorting you to visit the museum! President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was encouraging Indonesians to visit their museums.
It’s interesting to see how museums are now seen as cultural repositories of the past, particularly in the context of post-colonial Southeast Asia. The concept of the museum evolved from the desire to showcase “acquisitions” from the worldly travels of the European elite. This concept is somewhat different in the Southeast Asian context: more often than not, they initially began as a showcase of acquisitions by the former colonial masters to exhibit the exotic in the colonized lands; and in more modern times museums in Southeast Asia have played an important part in “recapturing” the exotic, and using it to develop and define the national identity. For example, it is no accident that the article m
Malaysian Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said he had called on Malaysian citizens and media not to use the term "Indon" for Indonesia. "I have made an appeal to the Malaysian media and people not to use terms which could slacken the relations between Malaysia and Indonesia which have been good so far," the Malaysian Minister told ANTARA News on the sidelines of a conference of ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) here on Thursday. He said Malaysia understood that the use of the word "Indon" hurts the feelings of the Indonesian people so that on Wednesday he called on the Malaysian public not to use the term. The ambassador said that Indonesia had actually objected to the use of the term a long time ago, but the Malaysian media remained using it for saving space in their newspapers. Two weeks ago, Indonesian citizens in Kuala Lumpur protested the Malaysian media for using "Indon" in their articles on Indonesia which they believed tended to create a

Indonesian prosecutors said they are confident a court will find a local subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corp and its top executive guilty of polluting a bay with toxic chemicals when judges announce their verdict next month. The US gold-mining giant, however, said prosecutors had failed to prove their allegations, and no environmental harm was ever done by Newmont in Buyat Bay, on Indonesia's Sulawesi island.Prosecutors in November asked judges to sentence Richard Ness - who heads the Denver, Colorado-based company's Indonesian subsidiary, Newmont Minahasa Raya - to three years in prison if found guilty of contaminating the bay with arsenic and mercury, and to fine Ness and Newmont more than $US165,000
