It’s indie movies vs. Indy’s movie at Cannes fest
CANNES, France (AP) — It’s indie movies versus Indy’s movie at the Cannes Film Festival. As the blitz of films, parties and industry schmoozing started Wednesday, the question was whether the independent movies beloved by Cannes critics could hold their own against “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” which plays this weekend. Good! I don't need fans of flavor-of-the-day blog bands around here... I need you folks who appreciate the good stuff... like so...Assuming that you don't recognize that album cover on sight, I'll tell you it's Skintone Collection, a compilation of Japanese producer Susumu Yokota's best work on his own label (Skintone, that is). This guy isn't super-well-known in the states, but that hasn't stopped him from being ridiculously prolific... he's put out something like 32 albums - you know those crazy Japanese with their "work ethic" and "efficiency"...

Deservedly so, I should add.In the mail were links for a few songs by Swedish indie pop artist/singer-/songwriter Staphan O’Bell, which turned out to be really likeable ones, sounding pretty much like Bob Dylan on a musical exchange trip to Gothenburg. Does this description make any sense? If not – imagine a singer-/songwriter playing those catchy indie pop tunes that always seem to find their way out of the Swedish indie pop capital? Was that a better one? No! Then check them out and describe the songs yourself! They are lovely and definitely worth a listen!+ Just Like Me+ Fashion Street+ I'm OK

I'm not really sure if flOw is a video game, but it certainly is an experience. As a game, flOw lacks gameplay, complexity, and challenge, but it's slogan is "...life could be simple." That slogan really embodies what flOw is. flOw is an incredibly fresh and relaxing voyage into the depths of a simple oceanic world. The gameplay is simple, but the presentation, graphics and sound work incredibly well. As a game, the only real incentive to keep playing is to evolve your creature and unlock new creatures, but flOw is enjoyable beyond that. Just as a good album is great to pop in and relax to, flOw is a great thing to start up just to veg out on the couch and experience the "lights and sounds" if you will. For less than the price of a movie ticket ($8.99), you can experience flOw and

EW's Top 25 Indie Albums; Does Radiohead Really Deserve No.1 Spot?
Entertainment Weekly’s editors feature the 'Indie Rock 25', profiling albums from 1984 (apparently the ‘beginning of indie’) to present, including classics from The Hold Steady, The Replacements, Yo La Tengo, The Pixies, Spoon, Pavement, Built to Spill, and The White Stripes to name a few. Some of the choices are questionable, not for being selected, but for their position in the ranking. For example, why is Radiohead's In Rainbows given the No.1 spot on the list? (Modest Mouse's stunning Lonesome Crowded West release is buried in the list at No. 12, just to name one aberration).Afterall, Radiohead's In Rainbows has been out less than six months, the band pissed off a lot of fans back in October for what was considered a dubious 'first release' and there are many other albums on this

Brazillian Indie ‘The Year My Parents Went on Vacation’ a Tender Window to the World
CHICAGO – Film is often at its best when it offers a “window to the world” about other cultures dealing with issues that life in the U.S. never imagines. “The Year My Parents Went on Vacation” is a meticulous, fascinating and tender story of Brazil in 1970 when revolution was in the air and the World Cup was the hope of bringing a country back together. Michel Joelsas is Mauro – the 13-year-old son of Daniel and Bia Stein – who are communist revolutionaries plotting against the military government of Brazil. On the run and forced from their home, they tell their son he’s going to stay with his grandfather in São Paulo because they are “going on vacation”. What they don’t know as they drop the boy at his grandfather’s apartment is that the old man has just died. The

This common scenario is ripe material that everyone can relate to. Drop Box is an attempt to capitalize on one very familiar setting (a video store) by mixing in someone not so mudane or typical: a national celebrity.

They Might Be Giants from Indie Pop to Kids Bop
They Might Be Giants is an eclectic pop music band that I remember from my high school days as part of the New Wave/Indie movement. Don't Lets Start was a fun favorite of me and my friends. Needless to say, I was a little surprised to learn that the guys have morphed from Indie Pop to Kids Bop on their latest album Here Comes the 123s.My son Ty loves the songs, so I thought I'd share one of their podcasts here:And, then, here's how I remember them from 1986:You can view more They Might Be Giants podcasts here.

      Spanish indie...
On the threshold of the weekend, the ever reliable J.A. sends an email recommending a bunch of new songs from two excellent Spanish indie pop bands. Both bands are singing in Spanish (don't be scared - ok!), but whereas Band a Part has taken the Belle & Sebastian/Camera Obscura approach writing short and sweet songs featuring brass, flute, vibraphone etc., Sundae from Sevilla has decided to walk down the path where various electronic elements are added to the genre (without abandoning it at all). But as always, I find it a lot more important (and so should you really) that the bands write stunningly beautiful songs that simply cannot be recommended enough.Sundae:+ Mil Canciones+ Hacia Atras+ El CineBand a Part:+ Menorca+ Souvenir de l'Avenir+ Sputnik Mon Amour

2008's First Must See Indie Rock Road Show
HOT NEW TOUR: SPOON & the WALKMENIt's been a tremendous 500 days for Austin indie kings Spoon . The band topped many a "Best of" list for 2007. For most, it was ironically - Spoon's indie rock anthem "The Underdog" that put them on top of the indie world. Having just see them play a show here in Boston with Cold War Kids; (Spoon was supported by the New York horns). (My thoughts: Spoon was very, very good and the Cold War Kids were fucking incredible!)Spoon has been on the road - touring extensively since 2001. Based on what I've seen and how dedicated the band is to impressing audience - All I can say is the new tour with The Walkmen is going to be hot! This April brings the first must-see tour of the year. Too bad it's so short!Brit Daniel and Spoon - Running the Road in 2008THE "Don

Goodbye Blue Monday (Sixty Dollar Indie Rock)
STARTING OFF RIGHT: ARTIST JEREMY FISHERI'm sure that Jeremy Fisher has heard many a comparison to great artists of the past. The one that springs to mind the most easily is probably Simon & Garfunkel. This being said, that pair was never this upbeat. He's also somewhat a troubadour like Dylan, but isn't that the requisite comparison? These types of comparisons and similarities come easy when there's such strong evidence of talent. Fisher released the "Goodbye Blue Monday" album last September and it's been a steady drive forward for him ever since. There's the brand new video for the single Cigarette that is just emerging now. It's not an endorsement of nicotine, but rather a tale involving romance, a kind of dependence, infatuation and surrender. This one has it all. Here's the amazi

      The Essence of Indie
Now the Devil has not been a big fan of the NME over the past couple of years. From the avoidable spat with Morrissey to the enduring obsession with self appointed "indie" celebrity non entities such as Amy Shitehouse and Lilly Allen; from the decline into an inkie Smash Hits to the seemingly endless promotion of sub standard childrens daytime pop acts such as Kate Nash and Jack Penate; from the dumbing down of journalistic standards (read review and interviews from the 70s and 80s and compare them to today it's like comparing a maths paper from 1950 with one from 2007!) to the frequent aborted attempts at creating scenes the NME has managed to depress more than inform or excite. Everyday Shooter is THE BEST downloadable game I have played on a console. It takes the popular geometry wars formula and adds a chain system and puts it all to music. Playing the game really is like playing through a music album. Each level has a unique music track, mood, feel, and a new chain system to learn. Learning how to chain is crucial to beating the levels and progressing through the game. The game is a little hard, but the incentive is always there to unlock the next level and experience a new song and shmup system. I can't recommend this title enough. Check it out in the PS3 store.

Valentine's Day Indie, Alternative and Rock Songs of Love with Artwork from Milk
This amazing illustration (above) is the work of a stunning Tucson artist simply named Milk. Her gallery of semi-avante garde artwork intricately blends elements of classic art styles with symbols of modernism that often reflect the darker and more disturbing side of love, loneliness and apparently substance abuse. Milk's art is simply memorizing, and it is no surprise that she is a favorite among indie bloggers, 'underground' artists and digital art enthusiasts. Milk rises above the sea of wanna-be artists and stakes her claim - even if it's with a pitchfork or a needle - as an accomplished, brilliant artist at a caliber worthy of being presented at trendy art galleries in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, Paris, Tokyo and London. Best Alternative, Indie and Rock Songs of 2007 - The List of Lists
Despite the fact that it is somewhat pretentious and plain nutty to say that any one song was the "best song of 2007", there are still dozens of music websites, news and entertainment organizations and blogs that are relentless in their self-righteous pursuit to announce to the world '2007's best song!'Beyond that, to assemble a top songs list in order of No.1 to No. 20, for example, is literally impossible and disingenuous, especially when anyone connected to the music world needs to listen to hundreds, if not thousands, of songs in a given year. (photo, top left: Spoon)After weeks, and many hours, searching and reviewing a few dozen list of lists for the 'best songs' of 2007, I whittled it all down to just the best, with a deliberate effort, of course, to weed out lists that focus purely

We in the Indie Arts/Crafts/DIY/Handmade movement have our own ideology that can easily be summed up as "Living the Indie Life(tm)".Here are a few "un-written" (up until now) guidelines on how to live the indie life.1) There is no way to avoid big box retailers in this day and age, but there are ways to minimize the dollars you spend at Wal-Mart, Target, Costco and others. How The Iphone Will Change Indie Film Forever
Apple released the iPhone to much hype and fanfare. It billed the device as three devices in one. It was a revolutionary product for the cell phone industry. But the iPhone is having an effect outside of the mobile phone and computing industries. In fact, we belive that history will show the iPhone's release as one of the single biggest events in the history of independent filmmaking. What, exactly, does the iPhone--a mobile phone/internet device/widescren iPod--have to do with <a href="http://www.hungryflix.com">indie film</a>? Well, a lot. The movie download market must prepare for a great new phase as we look forward to more and more great devices capable of playing our content. For independent content to survive and thrive, it must move to new delivery devices like Apple TV, iPod and now the iPhone. Support for these new devices will lead to growth in the audience for indie content. Many "mainstream" consumers will not view indie films at screenings

Writing Hot Scripts You Can Shoot Indie Style By Filmmaker Sid Kali
By: Sid Kali When I first got into screenwriting I was told to read Aristotle's Poetics, Syd Field's Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting, Lew Hunter's Screenwriting 434, and host of other books by brilliant people that I devoured religiously. I was a regular at screenwriting workshops, took classes, and felt very much the screenwriter despite not having wrote any part of a script. It's like a fighter that always trains, but never gets in the ring to go to war. In theory I knew what to do. In practice I was unproven. It's like you really never know if you can take a punch until you've been clipped on the chin. My mind was clogged thinking about three act structures, plot points, paradigms, story arch, and writing detailed biographies for characters. Writing a script was much more involved than just sitting at your computer typing fade in, then fade out. But I was fired up to a write a script that was high concept, smart, and followed all the advice I had taken in.I scanne

The Ks are Back! New Material from the NY Indie Rockers
One of the greatest live bands (and certainly one of the most fun!) in New York City is the Ks - a group I have come to know and love over the last couple years. Last year I shared their first album, "Skunk" with you - and I found myself playing it time and time again. (Consider the size of the music collection and the fact that I would opt for them over much more famous options - well it's a mighty compliment.) The Ks have just released their second album, "Can't Get It Together," - an album full of quality material that could make them one of the greatest live bands in New York.
