Prague, October 15, 2007 - DTP Tools today announced the release of its new Layer Comps plug-in for InDesign CS-CS3. Layer Comps provide a convenient way to store a snapshot of certain key aspects of your documents layers. A simple click in the palette lets you name and save your current view of layer visibility and editing state as a Layer Comp. You can create as many as you like, without substantially expanding your file size.
Layer Comps plug-in is a response to many feature request placed by InDesign users who use this feature in Photoshop and miss it in InDesign. Layer Comps plug-in is sold separately and as a part of Layer Tools bundle, which also contains Layer Groups plug-in. Layer Groups plug-in was also updated today.

We had a discussion about this on Inside Mac Radio the other day. Heres the basic idea. When you first set up a multi-page document in Indesign, you are asked to decide if you want it as facing pages or not. Odds are, you will. Thats why youre using Indesign and not Word. You want this thing to have a page layout. But, unless youre going to a professional offset printer for your multi-page project, or even if you just need to get a readable proof to a client, you wont want to have that single first page hanging out there in your layout.
So heres a simple way of making a facing page layout, using spreads, that you can keep as a template for future use.

In InDesign, choosing View> Display Performance lets you choose among Fast, Typical or High Quality. If High Quality slows you down too much, but Typical is too jaggy, you can increase the resolution of Typical by choosing InDesign> Preferences> Display Performance. Then use the sliders to increase the display quality of Raster and/or Vector graphics.

Because InDesign offers two different engines for hyphenating and wrapping text, you may be surprised when you add a manual line break and other lines change as well. For complete control over your line breaks in a paragraph, use Adobe’s Single-line Composer instead of the default Paragraph Composer. To select the Single-line Composer, highlight the paragraphs or text frames and choose it from the side menu on the Paragraph palette. To change the default for new documents, switch to Single-line Composer with no document open.

If your goal is to export styled text and pictures from InDesign to XML so that it can be repurposed in Web pages, database publishing, or ePaper, one affordable solution is EDV’s BatchXSLT for InDesign (390 euro). Markzware’s new Q2ID (v2) plug-in ($199) lets InDesign CS and CS2 open native QuarkXPress 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 documents. We tested it on some of our QuarkXPress 5, 6 and 7 documents and found that it produced results similar to what InDesign produces when opening QuarkXPress 3.3 and 4 documents. That is, it converts the geometry of the page layout very well, reformatting text using InDesign’s text engine, but InDesign crashes when it encounters code created by third-party XTensions that it doesn’t understand.
