An interesting article by Vipal Mongra, entitled "In death, afterlife,” appeared in The Deal on Monday predicting the future of Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDOs).  In the article, Messieur Mongra speculates how CDOs may fare in comparison to other products/strategies that were pronounced dead only to rise again from the ashes.  Most notably, the article points to how wrong many prognosticators were about the prediction (based on a wave of corporate defaults and broken deals) that LBOs and junk bonds would be gone forever.  The tone of  Mssr. Honda and Toyota both bumped up their June incentives in a major way, according to a new article in Automotive News. Year-over-year, Honda’s incentives jumped by 73.2 percent to an all-time high, and Toyota’s increased by 53.6 percent. That stands in contrast to the industry average, which actually dipped by some 7.3 percent versus a year ago.Critically, however, even with that new jump, Honda’s incentives totaled an average of $1221 per vehicle, and Toyota’s moved to $1567. Despite big jumps, both companies remain well shy of the industry average of $2422.For its part, Honda is seeking to move older models, many in tough segments (think: 2007 Accord and Pilot, as well as Odyssey and Ridgeline). (NYSE:TM) , coming off its most successful sales month in the U.S., said Friday that it is offering another round of incentives on its full-size Tundra pickup trucks.The incentives offered through July 31 include a choice of zero-percent financing for five years, rebates of up to $3,500, or reductions of $500 on down payments on three-year leases. The monthly payment on the leases remains $259, but the down payment drops to $2,499 from $2,999.Japan's Toyota passed Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F PRS) (NYSE:F PRA) (NYSE:F) for the No. 2 sales spot in the U.S. in May, when its sales increased 9.7 percent over year-earlier levels. General Motors Corp. The Hillsborough school district, which was the first Florida district to adopt the state's (now defunct) STAR performance pay plan, today became one of four in Florida to tap into a national program designed to reward effective teachers and principals. The USDOE announced that Hillsborough will get $3.1-million next year, and about $15.4-million over five years, through President Bush's Teacher Incentive Fund. The money will go to the district's Performance Optimized With Effective Rewards program, serving 116 high-needs schools. “We will pay $20,000 in closing costs…you can get into our homes with no costs!”…Sound familiar?  In our local market, builders have been offering to contribute 6% of the purchase price to a new buyer’s closing costs.  Really, it is a fantastic offering!  We are in a high closing cost state, so this is a very enticing incentive to buyers.  There is a HUGE problem that we are seeing in conjunction with this offer.  The builder requires the buyer to use their “approved” mortgage lender.  Normally, this wouldn’t be an issue.  It’s good for the builder since they know the mortgage lender and can trust their customers are in good hands.  The caveat to this is some of these in-house mortgage lenders are taking advantage of the 6% contribution.
