The wait is finally over. Subaru has released official photos and initial info on the new JDM-spec Impreza WRX STI. Details remain scant, however, as Subaru only tells us that the new STI is powered by a 16v 2.0L boxer with a twin-scroll turbo mated to a 6-speed manual. SI-DRIVE, multi-mode Drivers Control Center Differential (DCCD) and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) are also standard. All of these things have been widely speculated on and/or reported already. Specific power numbers are conspicuously absent, so we'll have to wait for the rest of it when the car bows in Tokyo in a couple of weeks. Based on what's already been leaked, look for 304 horses and 311 lb-ft of torque in the Japanese-market model. Though Subaru engineers took careful measures to ensure their Impreza WRX STi tester wasn't spotted en route to the Nurburgring or at the track's staging area, eventually the car cover had to come off. It appears Subaru engineers were forced to unveil the production body of the new STi in order to test how the final form affects cooling. Though we just showed you this official teaser shot of the STi, these spy shots show the car outside in perfect light where every detail of the new design is cleary visible. Aside from some black tape, the blue STi underneath is practically naked. Note what appear to be air extractor vents or intake scoops on the sides of the front bumper, a design element we weren't entirely aware of before. We can also clearly see the rear wing now, which is less ostentatious than we were hoping. The STi has always been known for sporting an obnoxious rear wing, but it looks like that tradition will end with the 2008 model.

I like Subaru in general because they have a reputation for marketing directly to women and gay people, and I think that’s important. (I also like them because of their standard AWD, and excellent mileage, and the fact that the Forester is one of the few compact SUV’s that really does fit in a compact parking space.)

Six years ago, when we first looked deep into its big, round bug eyes, we fell hard for the WRX, the ’roided-up version of the basic-transportation Subaru Impreza. Yes, we were smitten, and we emoted to the tune of two consecutive 10Best awards. But something’s gone sour. The WRX hasn’t aged well, particularly on the inside, and these days there’s a bunch of younger, hotter models we’d rather make a mixtape for, like the VW GTI and the Mazdaspeed 3. But the WRX has been calling us again—it’ll be different this time, I swear, it says—in hopes of rekindling the flame with an all-new 2008 version.

Sono confermate le due versioni, berlina e hatchbach: il passo è stato aumentato di 95mm per guadagnare spazio e confort, così come la sospensione posteriore completamente ridisegnata, nella speranza che questo non porti ad un minore piacere di guida per i “vecchi” subaristi della prima ora. Dopo le prime foto della nuova Subaru Impreza WRX ecco nuove foto dell’auto in versione sedan e non i nversione “hatch” come le foto precedenti. Today we bring you the first shots of the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX sedan, which again moves the approval meter a bit more to the positive side. The front end is virtually the same as the five-door hatchback's with an obscenely large intake and matte grille flanked by bits of chrome. The sedan, however, appears more balanced than the five-door hatchback without all of that bulk over the rear wheels. Motor Trend's May issue was filled with their own studio shots of the new Impreza WRX. They quickly leaked onto the net as soon as it reached the subscribers. Road&Track posted official, and certainly more appealing shots of the new Subie today.The poor scans that we had to live with for the past couple of days left us with a harsh impression of the new design. These official shots give us a better look at the Impreza. As you can see, the car has grown quite alot (driver and car). Subaru aimed for a more practical, yet still powerful new Impreza. L’anticipazione di qualche giorno fa sulla nuova Suabru WRX non era una bufala. Purtroppo. Dobbiamo arrenderci all’idea che la nuova Subaru è cambiata, non è più quell’auto sportiva quasi identica esteticamente (e poco meno potente tecnicamente) all’auto che corre nel campionato mondiale Rally. La nuova Subaru è un’auto da strada, con lo spirito da corsa ma un’auto stradale e basta. Al Salone di New York ci saranno le WRX, dotate del solito boxer 2.5 da 225Cv ed alcune modifiche non ancora dichiarate alla trasmissione. (more…)

Here's one last look at a Subaru Impreza prototype before its make its official debut at the New York Auto Show in a few months. Subaru gave us a big clue with the showing of their B5 concept, and the Impreza and WRX models are following the B5's lead with a dramatic makeover which turns its trunk into a hatchback! Yes, that's right: The Impreza, as seen here, will be a hatchback when the new model makes it's debut for the 2008 model year! Just like the B5 Concept. And, we're hearing the Impreza name may even change with the introduction of the new car, but we can't imagine Subaru dropping the WRX designation.
