Illegal immigrants face threat of no college
Some states are making it harder for illegal immigrants to attend college by denying in-state tuition benefits or banning undocumented students.
In the past two years, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma have refused in-state tuition benefits to students who entered the USA illegally with their parents but [...]
A lot of people sees U.S. as the land of milk and honey, a place where you can easily secure "the american dream". But I also hear of a lot of sad stories from people whose move to the U.S. did not do them any better. In my opi

Australia has recently announced an increase in the minimum salary that employers are required to pay temporary foreign workers under the nation's 457 visa scheme. A visa is an application to enter the United States not a permit. It has been read by a consular officer at the American embassy or consulate and has been reviewed for the determination of eligibility to enter the United States for a specific purpose. There are different types of visas and one in particular is the 'B-1 Visitor for Business' which permits a foreign national to enter the U.S. to conduct business associated with international trade or commerce. This particular visa would also allow you to travel to the United States as far as the port of entry (airport or land border crossing) and ask the immigration officer to allow you to enter the country. The immigration officer would then allow you entrance and also decide for what length of time you would be permitted to stay for that p

David Cameron has weighed in to the London Mayoral contest by effectively trying to silence Boris Johnson, the Conservative contender, on matters of immigration. Johnson said that he thought it would benefit the capital if illegal migrants were offered a one-off pardon. Cameron thinks this would just let others think they can come into the country illegally leading to demands for further amnesties. Both sides have a point. The truth is, though, that we don't have total control over immigration now that the EU gets its 90 cents worth of nose-poking into the issue. Immigrants are required for our economy, because a lot of people won't work in the places and for the pay that the migrants are prepared to. The government is going some way to relieving the problem of unabated, unregulated immigra

The B.B.C.’s politically correct Biblically incorrect Nativity…
The Nativity as an asylum seekers’ tale
The contemporary nativity play will feature Mary and Joseph as asylum seekers in Liverpool
The BBC stoked controversy yesterday by announcing plans for a “contemporary” nativity play featuring Mary and Joseph as asylum seekers instructed to report to the nearest passport office.
In a move that has dismayed traditionalists, who think the story is dramatic enough without having to embellish it with politically correct themes, the action will take place in the centre of Liverpool.
The story will be told against a backdrop of pop music and will star Cathy Tyson, who appeared as a call girl in the film Mona Lisa, as a female Herod and Jennifer Ellison, the former Brookside star and glamour model, as an angel.
During the retelling, actors in contemporary dress will walk through parts of the city singing hits from The Beatles’ “Let it Be” and &l
In commemorating International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Angered by the hardening stance on immigration-related issues, Elvira Arellano will be holding hunger strike outside the US Embassy. She told the the Prensa Latina, “On behalf of the thousands of undocumented people, we demand the end of abuse against Mexicans in US territory.”
Elvira Arellano spoke out in behalf of thousands of immigrant women here in the United States. She demanded that Mexican families living in the United States receive decent treatment and being treated as terrorist. Unfortunately, here in the US, immigrant women are violently separated from their children. Arellano’s message should be a reminder that an immigrants journey North is to seek work, in order to provide a better future for their family.
When it comes to violence against women, it is a direct consequence of the inequalities between women and men. Poverty, marginalization and certain aspects of women&rsq

Once again we find ourselves in the Political Party conference season. This week finds the Liberal-Democrat Party on a charabanc trip to Brighton for their annual beano-by-the-sea, and I feel that it will be particularly memorable for producing one of the most ridiculous ideas I have heard in many years. Party spokesperson Nick Clegg has announced plans to allow illegal immigrants in Britain who have been here for ten years or more the opportunity to come clean and apply for citizenship. That of course is providing that they can prove that they have been in Britain for ten years, that they are fluent in the lingo, and that they have no criminal record!Anybody entering a country illegally is committing a crime and is entitled to a free membership of the "Illegal League" with immediate effect, and anyone who has managed to stay under the radar for ten years is going to have committed a lot of other crimes along the way. If they have a genuine reason for being in this country they would h

She was deported several hours later, said the Rev. Walter Coleman, pastor of Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago, where Arellano had taken refuge."She has been deported. She is ready to continue the struggle against the separation of families from the other side of the border."(link)If she was really worried about 'separation' of families then she would have kept her family in their legal country. This book focuses on a Vancouver suburb where the Chinese population has surpassed the white community numerically and socioeconomically, but not politically, and where the author uncovers disturbing cultural conflicts, educational dissensions, and "silent" power struggles between school and home. What Guofang Li reveals illustrates the challenges of teaching and learning in an increasingly complex educational landscape in which literacy, culture, race, and social class intertwine. Kyle from Immigration Orange just informed me that on Tuesday August 7th, 2007, Edimar Alves Araujo, a 34 year-old immigrant a Brazilian national, died in federal custody because he was denied access to his medication for his epilepsy. His sister, Irene Araujo, told the Boston Herald his death could have been prevented if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers his medication were not with held from him. On Tuesday, she went to the Woonsocket Police station twice to let police know Araujo suffered from epilepsy and needed to take phenobarbital, an anti-epileptic drug, in the event of a seizure.
Araujo said police refused to take it, saying her brother could tell them if he needed medication. She said a friend tried again to bring the medication to him Wednesday morning, but learned her brother had died.
Paula Grenier, a spokesman for the ICE Boston office, said that less than an hour after he was transferred to the custody of ICE, Araujo was rushed to the Rhode Island Hosp
Over the weekend, I received an email from Jay Johnson-Castro about a family that was separated at the border by our immigration rules had a happy ending as they finally reunited in South Florida last Friday (video). Abel Gómez showed up one day last month at a U.S.-Mexico border crossing in Texas certain that immigration authorities would let him in, along with his wife and two children. As a Cuban refugee, Gómez, was paroled into the US under the wet foot/dry foot policy. But his wife Ocdalis and children - 2-year-old Abel and 6-year-old Winnelis - are Venezuelan. Border Patrol immediately detained them and took them to the T. Don Hutto Residential Center in Taylor, TX.
The current state of the immigration debate in the US has affected the we handle immigrant families. Unfortunately, understandable concerns over national security have resulted in increasingly restrictive immigration policies that have led to an increase in immigration detention like the Gómezs. Hat tip to Almost Average American for posting this excellent tongue in cheek piece on illrgal immigration. Although after checking my taxes the last few years it looks like a pretty damned good deal actually... ~RJH I want to be an illegal immigrant! Dear Senator Harkin,As a native Iowan and excellent customer of the Internal Revenue Service, I am writing to ask for your assistance. I have contacted the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine the process for becoming an illegal alien and they referred me to you.My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S. Citizen to illegal alien stems from the bill which was recently passed by the Senate and for which you voted. If my understanding of this bill's provisions is accurate, as an illegal alien who has been in the United States for five years, all I need to do to become a citizen is to pay a $2,000 fine and income taxes for three of the last five years. I know a good deal when I see one and I am anxious
In 2004, United States President George W Bush proposed a guest worker program to absorb migrant laborers who would otherwise come to the U.S. as illegal aliens. However, the details were left to legislators.

We have always been told that US is land of opportunity where newcomers can achieve better lives for themselves and their families only if they persevere and work hard. One fear for those who are ardently pro-immigration have is that Congress may pass a policy that is intended to hurt the interests of an immigrant - legal and undocumented - who are trying to navigate through this country. Members of Congress have proposed heightened border security, increased enforcement of immigration laws, and even the criminalization of undocumented immigrants and those who help them.
Today, many Congressional leaders want to allow corporations and contractors to recruit hundreds of thousands of workers a year outside of the US and put them to work here on temporary visas. In fact, it is not only multinational corporations who would be benefiting from this bill; it would also be the military. A couple of days ago, Kyle from Immigration Orange informed of an of an article that was written in the Bost
WASHINGTON — The wife of an Army specialist missing in Iraq could be deported because she is an illegal immigrant, but U.S. authorities say they have no intention of doing so in the foreseeable future, FOXNews.com has learned.
Army Spec. Alex Jimenez, 25, has been missing since May 12, when his unit was ambushed by insurgents. His wife, Yaderlin, was a resident of the Dominican Republican and entered the country illegally in 2001. The two married in 2004 and now live in Lawrence, Mass.
Procedures that could lead to her deportation began in 2006, but U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials alongside the Jimenez family attorney halted those proceedings before a deportation order could be issued, ICE spokeswoman Jamie Zuieback told FOXNews.com.

Cheap immigrant labor has become more addictive to American business than heroin ever could be. I hear businesses, especially the farming industry going on about labor shortages I cant help but sigh. The thing is they are lying out their asses. There has never been any sort of shortage of labor in America and wont possibly be any for the foreseeable future. What they really mean is there is a shortage of people willing to work for the sub standard wages they can get away with paying illegal immigrants. Anyone that knows me knows I am rabidly pro American business but I am also a believer in Tough Love and business needs to break this ugly addiction to cheap foreign labor. A common meme of the agro industry is that prices will skyrocket without immigrant labor. Total lie. Labor is about 10% of the cost for oh say lettuce. The example they use all the time is we would have to pay $5 a head for lettuce. But even if true I would pay it GLADLY if it would insure that real US citizens
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Voters in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch have approved an ordinance aimed at preventing landlords from renting housing to illegal immigrants.
The measure, which supporters said would help the local economy by pushing out illegal immigrants, passed on Saturday by a vote of 4,058-1,941 in the Texas city of 28,500 people.
It requires landlords to verify that would-be renters are in the United States legally before leasing housing to them.
The Farmers Branch City Council passed the ordinance last year, but opponents forced an election on it.
Opponents of the Farmers Branch ordinance filed earlier lawsuits against the city, and said after the vote they would continue fighting it in the courts. Their argument, in part, is that immigration laws are a federal, not local, matter.
“The silent majority in Farmers Branch agrees that this illegal ordinance will drain the community of resources and ultimately hurt the reputation of the city. We will act quickly to pr

I must admit, I am not inclined to mass protests. To me, protest culture seems anachronistic, a product of the 1960’s when large rallies really meant something. However, there is no doubting the power you feel when you see tens of thousands of people marching for a cause.
On May 1st, an estimated 75,000 people marched from Union Park to Grant Park in downtown Chicago. They marched for a variety of specific causes all under the banner of loosening immigration controls. According to the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a main organizer for the rally, there were four main political goals:
legalization and a path to earned citizenship for the undocumented
reunification of families divided by broken immigration laws
a moratorium on the immigration raids separating families
condemn President Bush’s anti-family “Z-visas”
People marched carrying a menagerie of signs and banners with slogans like, “No human being is illegal!” and, R
I didn't get to watch the debate on O'Reilly tonite but Tammy Bruce is right on target about how the police will be screwed no matter what they do. Immigrant Rights Rallies Smaller Than Last Year - New York TimesExcerpt:"Tens of thousands of people pressing for immigrants’ rights demonstrated on Tuesday in dozens of cities. But with advocates splintered over tactics, the crowds paled in comparison with the turnout last year."http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/02/us/02immig.htmlAlex
Two points the marchers might want to consider:
1. I don't mind people marching peacefully. I just don't think you're plan, if I understand correctly would be the best course of action. Neither do most Americans. You march and we, in a nice way, say, "We don't believe your plan would be in our best benefits. Since we run the country, we get to decide. In fact, it seems rather ungrateful to demand something from your, in many cases, unwilling hosts.
2. Why would the marchers hold the rally on May Day? May Day is associated with Communism which the United States spent great human and physical resources to defeat. It's against many Americans' values and, if that's the kind of system you want, I don't think you're the kind of immigrant we shall choose to have. Really, why would we want to allow people to come in if they want to take our possessions and distribute them amongst themselves? Think about it.
3. The American realization of what's going on has created a different at

One wonders whether that title will attract the attention of the French authorities but it probably won’t.
We’ve been living here for over three years now with no residence permit (Carte de Séjour) for Wendy and now pretty much accept that she’ll almost certainly never get one. Now, in every other country that would be something of a problem in that Wendy would be deported indeed she would already have been deported. Not in France though.
How come we can do that?
Well, what we did was apply for her Carte de Séjour within 90 days of us arriving here. Actually, we applied for the European version of that ie the Carte de Séjour Europeenne but that wouldn’t really have mattered as it turns out.
The CdSE is something of an unusual beast in that the only documents that the authorities are legally allowed to ask for are a passport and a proof of relationship. This being France, they actually asked for around 30 separate documents which we refused to provide and ther

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Illegal immigration opponents have sued the Los Angeles Police Department, taking aim at its long-standing policy of ignoring most suspects’ immigration status.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Superior Court seeks to force officers to inform federal immigration officials when illegal immigrants are arrested on drug charges.
The department prohibits officers from inquiring about the immigration status of suspects, a policy strongly supported by Police Chief William Bratton and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
The lawsuit was brought on behalf of unidentified police officers who are afraid to speak out but argue the policy creates a situation where the same illegal immigrants are repeatedly arrested when they could have been deported, lawyer David Klehm said.

Well, no wonder illegals move into the country and motivate to LA. Isn’t it about time this country pulls together as ONE nation and creates a unified front against these invaders?
The last time I took the trouble to look, I seem to remember that the value of charity and volunteer work in New Britain equalled the cost of the NHS. That is, the free labour given by people out of the goodness of their hearts underpinned the country’s economy to the extent that it was worth the same as the nations biggest economic cost. Without charity work, it is clear, the country’s economy would grind to a halt. The country does not produce enough wealth to pay its own way. It depends on people propping it up by doing things which are not valued in terms of money, but have a massive economic benefit.
So, what would happen if you could harness even more of this goodwill and unpaid economic activity? What about if you could find a group of people who you could force into contributing to the country’s economy for no money? That would be brilliant, surely? College students from Michigan to Florida have found a new way to get attention, offend others and make a right-wing statement all at once. It’s a game with a name that says it all: “Catch the Illegal Immigrant.”Hey, I'm all for seeing a few "streakers," however, if you're into sitting on "flagpoles," I'm sure there is an appropriate fetish site for that; but I regress digress.Do you ever notice how certain "free speech" on campuses shouldn't be "free?" Do you ever notice that it is usually speech or activity from groups labeled "Rightwing," that tend to raise the ire of the Times/School Administrators/Liberal college groups? This mornings Times pines for the days when life was as simple as making your statement the "old fashioned" way; with your flesh. According to research bureau Foquz Etnomarketing most members of the big ethnic minorities in the Netherlands voted on one of the left wing parties last Wednessday. Of the Moroccans even more 90%. Two-third of them voted on the PvdA, as did almost half of the Surinam voters and more than one-third of the Turkish voters. Remarkably, 12.3% Of the Turkish votes went to the center-left / liberal Democrats 66 ("Democraten 66', "D66' in short) of Alexander Pechtold. On its website public television news show NOS Journaal suggests that the explanation for the popularity the D66 among Turkish voters is PvdA's decision to remove Erdinç Saçan of the candidate list, because of his refusal to fully acknowledge the Armenian genocide, bred bad blood among the Turkish electorate. However, Foquz also states that the PvdA remains very popular among Turks as 35,8% of them voted on the Dutch Labour Party.

USA Today is running a story headlined "Cities get at illegal immigrants through cars." The article begins with a bold proclamation: "Local officials getting tough on illegal immigrants have a new target: their cars." Only "getting tough" has nothing to do with immigration or deportation. "Communities in Alabama, California, Illinois and elsewhere are using laws that punish drivers without licenses. Cities often tow cars immediately." So drivers without a license get big fines, a tow job and that's it. But wait! Even this approach is under attack. "'There's been a long history of ordinances that don't say anything about immigrants and nothing about national origin, but clearly are aimed at particular groups,' says John Trasviña, president of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. 'They have uniformly been struck down.'" For example, they're challenging a law in Waukegan, Illinois that fines
