      Iceland - Nature's Wonderland
Rich in natural travel wonders with large snaking glaciers, weird and wonderful rock formations from the highly active volcanoes, sulfuric thermal pools and waterfalls galore from the melting snow and glaciers, Iceland’s natural beauty, rich Norse legends and easy going nature should put it on the itinerary of any avid traveler. Expressive and energetic waterfalls seemingly tumble over every rock face in beautiful unaltered settings. Indeed, the word foss (for waterfall) is indelibly engraved in the minds of every visitor to Iceland. Many falls are unnamed yet are sufficiently impressive that many other countries would encompass them into national. With a true sense of nature, Iceland leaves their waterfalls au naturel uncluttered with fencing, restrictive paths or concrete viewing platf

Best Places to live other than Iceland and Norway!
According to the annual United Nations report Australia is the third most desirable country to live in. This is based on a various factors such as wealth, life expectancy and educational levels. Australia came in behind top-ranking Iceland and Norway in second spot.  Seriously is that our competition - Iceland or Norway? I can't imagine people saying, wouldn't it be great to live in Iceland? These surveys produce some strange results and seem to be skewed towards the smaller European countries. To me, I think as an overall package and given the current world economy Australia is the best place to be. You can choose to have a hectic lifestyle or as easily a more laid back one! Jobs are plentiful and why live a long life if you can't enjoy it. 360 days of sunshine a year in Australia as compared to 100 or so in Iceland! Enough said. If I was to pick 2 alternatives based on lifestyle, economy and future prospects - I would say New Zealand or Spain would be my next 2 choices. W

Iceland - The coolest place on Earth
There is a sure fire-way to cure yourself of boredom, joblessness and that nagging feeling that you should possibly be doing more with yourself and engaging with reality, and that's by doing the exact opposite of that and escaping reality. And for an Australian, there really isn't anywhere further away you could go than Iceland - actually, from this cool little page, the exact opposite side of the Earth to Sydney is in the middle of the Atlantic - the opposite to Iceland is down near Antarctica below New Zealand - but my point remains... It has been a dream of mine to go to Iceland for many years - partially because of this escapism, but also because everything I had heard of this place suggested that I may like it - forward thinking, a little bit socialist, very clean (although ironically, because it only has around 300 000 people and a large aluminium industry, it has one of the largest carbon foot-prints per capita in the world), attractive and reserved Nordic people, stunningly be

Yoko Ono Unveils Imagine Peace Tower on October 9th in Iceland!
Yoko Ono, the Japanese-American wife of the late Beatles star, John Lennon, will unveil the Imagine Peace Tower in Rekjavik, Iceland on October 9th. This date would have been the 67th birthday of Lennon who was killed by a mentally ill fanback in 1980. Ono said, “This is something that we spoke about 40 years ago. Our dream is finally coming true,” said Ono, 74, in an interview with the Associated Press (courtesy of The Showbuzz/CBS). According to AP, “The Imagine Peace Tower is a stories-tall beam of light that will emanate from a wishing well bearing the words “imagine peace” in 24 languages.” The tower’s light will shine from Oct. 9 to Dec. 8 each year, “so it has the feeling of the shortness of life, but the light is eternal,” Ono said. Ono came up with the light tower concept in 1965, and John Lennon was interested. The AP article reports, “When she turned 70, Ono decided she needed a place to keep the thousand

A Special Request for a Home Exchange in Iceland
It's disappointing when someone who lives in exactly the place you want to visit doesn't reply to a home exchange offer. So, when Paul, a recent Home Base Holidays member from Southport, England, let us know he hadn't heard back from a member in Iceland, I replied with a number of reasons why the member might not have responded, e.g. he could be away and not checking email regularly or may have overlooked the exchange offer message if it was filed in a junk folder by mistake. I also gave Paul some suggestions for improving the response rate to messages sent to members, including ideas for writing an enticing, personalised and informative exchange offer message. I had asked him to forward his offer message so that I could re-send it to the member in Iceland. On reading Paul's forwarded message, I knew it shouldn't be any fault of his that he hadn't received a reply. Paul's exchange offer message was excellent. The only small point I would make is that he could have included a

Iceland to have all fossil free cars
Iceland will have the greenest transport of any country soon. They are experimenting with having cars and buses using hydrogen. Already, the country’s electricity and heating comes from hydroelectric and geothermal springs that are in abundance in Iceland. But for cars they have to transport overseas and the result is $8 a gallon. So Iceland will invest heavily in hydrogen technologies. Hydrogen is produced with water and electricity and Iceland has much of both. Car companies such as General Motors, Toyota, and Daimler Chrysler, are using the island-nation as a testing ground. Pictured here is the Mercedes Benz A-class F-cell. It is an electric car powered by a fuel cell which generates electricity by converting hydrogen and oxygen into water. Right now there are a few buses in the capital Reykjavik, but by 2010 the people of Iceland will be able to purchase one. Within a year local energy company employees and a Hertz will get to drive them. Maybe you can go to Iceland as tourist a

2008 Euro qualifying Group F match previews: Sweden vs Denmark, Latvia vs N. Ireland, & Iceland vs Spain
Sweden vs Denmark, 1430 ESTRåsunda - SolnaDespite a game-in-hand, the Danes are desperate for a win as they travel to Solna to take on the group-leading Swedes. This is of course a rematch of the June 2nd fixture, when a fan came on the field and attacked the ref, costing Denmark the match and potentially three points. Even a draw for Denmark would keep their hopes alive as they play four of their remaining five matches at home.Meanwhile, a win for Sweden would all but assure them advancement. Lead by the enigmatic one, Zlatan Ibrahimović, they have a relative healthy side and we could even see the return of captain Fredrik Ljungberg. Also after suffering through a six game winless streak they've rebounded with three straight wins. It's pretty clear what Denmark has to do here, come out with all guns blazing, though it's hard to say whether they have the arsenal to penetrate the Swedish side. We also don't know which side will show up, the one that beat Germany 1-0 in a frien

In Iceland eco cars park for free
This is the sort of incentive that all cities should be taking up. New parking regulations in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. Means that cars that are considered to be eco friendly will be able to park in the center of the capital for free. It is estimated that the total number cars that will be applicable is only 1,400 this is out of 230,747, which is less than one per cent. For a car to be considered eco friendly it has to pass the eco test, this means the car must consume less than five liters of fuel per 100 km. Cars that qualify are to be given a special disc that is placed on the inside of the window screen. For me, I find it fascinating that of the 103 000 square kilometres of land that makes up Iceland, 11% is covered in glaciers, 64% in wasteland (cooled lava flows mainly, giving it a desolate "moon-like" appearance) and 2% by lakes, leaving only around 23% for vegetation. This fact, and its isolation, mean that there are relatively few people living in Iceland.

      Iceland Is Niceland
We’ve finally arrived in the port of Reykjavik in Iceland!!! Let’s have a look around just around the harbor and along the nearest shore! Our second stop is going to the Blue Lagoon spa with geothermal seawater from wells 2000 m (6000 feet) deep and a temperature of 36-39°C (100-110°F) filled with silica, minerals salts and blue green algae. Oh, so refreshing to float around there! Next off to the nationalpark Thingvellir and Þingvallavatn (prounanced like th) which is a lake with a surface of 84 km² - the biggest (natural) lake of the island. Its greatest depth is 114 m and the large quantity of sulfur and salt, makes the lake extremely light and the water seems to be in less weight than other lakes. At the northern shore of the lake the parliament of Iceland, Alþingi, which was founded in the year of 930 - one of the oldest parliamentary institutions of the world! Horsing Around in Iceland
I don’t know what it is about fruits and vegetables with me lately. First, it was bananas in Turkey, then lemons in Bulgaria, and just recently I recalled this story about carrots in Iceland! At the beginning of December, Bipin and I flew to Iceland to attempt the record for the piggyback mile. Everything had been arranged at the last minute so although our friend, Snatak, was happy to have us stay at his place, he hadn’t had any time to prepare for us. The morning after we arrived, he had to run off to work, but kindly told us that we were welcome to anything in the frig. There wasn’t much. I found some yogurt, some cheese and, no exaggeration, about 20 pounds of carrots! Wintertime in Iceland is pretty rough. Being so far north, the island only gets a few hours of sunlight a day and the darkness can become oppressive. Knowing that eating carrots helps to improve eyesight, my hypothesis was that Icelandic people must eat tons of carrots to improve their night vision. When I aske
