Mahendra Singh Dhoni's young India team snatched the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship title after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs in a rousing final on Monday. The Indians, restricted to 157-5 after electing to take first strike in good batting conditions, fought back to bowl out valiant Pakistan for 152 before a sell-out crowd of 32 000 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. Pakistan appeared out for the count when they were reduced to 104-7 after 16 overs, but Misbah ul-Haq gave the Indians a scare with a late charge of 43 off 38 balls. Misbah and his tail-end partners took 19 runs in the 18th over bowled by Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and seven runs in the 19th from Rudra Pratap Singh, leaving 13 to get off the final over. Seamer Joginder Sharma bowled a wide off the first ball and was hammered for a six by Misbah with the second legitimate ball, but gave India victory with his next delivery as the batsman holed out to fine-leg. Kingsmead, Durban, on 19 September 2007 Match scheduled to begin at 14:00 local time (12:00 GMT) After beating India and England in their super eight stage, Kiwis are almost in semi finals. Their best performers from bat still date are CD McMillan, JDP Oram,SB Styris and RL Taylor, with ball skipper DL Vettori is in top form, he is capturing wickets with good economical run rate. If we talk about fielding they save a lot of runs though in couple of occations they were below par. Today they will play South Africa who have good bowling line up with SM Pollock and M Morkel in good form. Kiwis need to keep a check on GC Smith,HH Gibbs and JA Morkel who are the heros of their previous wins. Main strength of South African team is their performance as a team, they have big hitter down the order and have many all rounders who can chip in with decent bowling performance if required. Like New Zealand they too have a great combination of excellent fielding side though there were couple of catch
A persistent drizzle in Durban resulted in India's opening match of the ICC World Twenty20 being abandoned without a ball being bowled. Both India and Scotland got a point apiece, and it left India in a situation where they had to avoid a heavy defeat against Pakistan on Friday to make it through to the Super Eights. Scotland finished their engagements with a point after the 51-run defeat to Pakistan in their opening game. Ryan Watson won the toss and decided to send India in to bat at Kingsmead, but the rain came down again long before the players could take the field. For India, who have played just one Twenty20 game, it meant a day-long wait to give a largely new-look side a hit. Names synonymous with Indian cricket over the past decade and more - Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly - were missing, and for the prodigal sons like Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan, it was an opportunity to revive stalled careers.Read more : http://cricket.vgreets.com/news/India2.asp
