I’m sure this isn’t news for most of you, but it was for me.
Yesterday afternoon, the internet governing body ICANN announced changes to the top level domain system that could have profound implications for the online sector.

In what is seen as the biggest expansion to Internet domain name space yet, the ICANN yesterday approved a plan to introduce new top-level domains along with the option of applying for customized ones. In other words, customers will soon be able to choose top level domains that are more descriptive or specific such as .free, .travel, and .tech instead of settling for existing ones such as .com, .n

According to John Mackenzie, a partner with Pinsent Masons: "This has the potential for utter chaos (...) The attraction for domainers and cybersquatters is not going to be setting up a registry that matches someone else's brand, it will be in the generic TLDs. All of a sudden, every brand will be forced to register their name at .shop, .buy and .london to stop anyone else getting it."Article on O
The Internet's key oversight agency relaxed rules Thursday to permit the introduction of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of new Internet domain names to join ".com," making the first sweeping changes in the network's 25-year-old addressing system. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers unanimously approved the new guidelines on the final day of weeklong meetings in Pari

ICANN proposes that single-character second level domain names should be auctioned off in order to fund areas of public good for the Internet community. Single-character domain names are presently reserved in all 16 generic top level domain registry agreements.
The allocation of single-character names is likely to generate significant revenue. Funds realized as a result of [...]
Image via Wikipedia (ICANN meeting Lisbon, 2007)I will be heading over to the ICANN meeting in Paris next week. At present ICANN holds international meetings three times a year and it's a very good opportunity to get involved with the discussions of policy and future development of the internet. While I am looking forward to the trip, I'm also quite nervous, as I have been asked to give a presentat
In order to clarify the system for dealing with incorrect whois domain name registration information, ICANN announces it has contacted the registrars reported as being the registrars for the majority of websites advertised in unsolicited promotional email.
According to Stacy Burnette, Director of Compliance at ICANN, infringing domain names are locked and websites removed every week [...]
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) had announced their important privacy policy changes to protect consumers from losing their domain names if the registrar goes defunct or loses its accreditation. ICANN now requires all registrars to store a copy of their registrations with an outside data storage firm. This protects you by ensuring that [...]

Have you ever searched for a domain name, found that it was available at the time of the search, only to find it has been registered by someone else when you come back to register it a few minutes later?
Well, apparently enough people have complained about this occurance to indicate that it might not be simply a coincidence every time.
From arstechnica: After years of controversy, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has officially reversed its approval of a proposal that would have established a .xxx top-level domain for use by the pornography industry. Initially proposed by ICM Registry in 2000 and resubmitted in 2004, the .xxx domain faced strong opposition from politicians and conservative groups.
After the second .xxx proposal was approved in 2005, the Family Research Council (FRC) mobilized its forces in an all-out crusade. Claiming that the creation of a .xxx TLD would allow pornographers to “expand their evil empires on the Internet,” the FRC urged its supporters to express opposition to the proposal. The Department of Commerce alone received nearly 6,000 letters expressing concern on the subject. The Department of Commerce eventually requested that ICANN spend more time considering the implications of the proposal before reaching a conclusion. A few senators apparently

By Mark PartridgeDomain name conflicts affecting business are on the rise.Fortunately, victims of domain name abuse have an effective tool to fight cybersquatting. The Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) adopted in 1999 by the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the international body responsible for domain name governance, has been used to address thousands of domain name conflicts. As an ICANN UDRP Panelist with over 125 reported decisions, I have read many submissions, some very good, many bad. Here are six recommendations for UDRP submissions.1. The Complaint (or Answer) should be a brief. This is your only chance to argue your position. Treat it like a memorandum in support of a motion for preliminary injunction or summary judgment by presenting your case as an advocate. Mere notice pleading allowed in our federal system is not effective for the circumstances.2. The Pleading should be brief. Although the provider's limitations on length are largel
A new toolkit has been unveiled by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for website designers and software application developers so that new top-level domains (TLDs) created since 2001 are recognized in software and online applications.
The ICANN toolkit will save developers and site operators both time and money by eliminating the need to reprogram their systems when a new top-level domain is added.
The code from ICANN can be inserted into existing programs or applications, and will automatically check the validity of an email address or URL against DNS data. Once installed, no additional updates are required.
Changes that occur will be automatically noted by the program. The program is now in its third Beta version and more improvements are planned based on user feedback.
"It wasn't so long ago that .COM and .NET - the last bit of a domain name - were largely the only options for Internet users. Now, in addition to more than 240 country code TLDs, there a

Amid the outcry over allegations that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wants the security keys to the DNSSEC encryption technology slowly – very slowly – being adopted by internet overlord ICANN, one ICANN board member, the refreshingly candid Susan Crawford, has recently taken her own swipe at [...]

A 9-5 vote against the ''.xxx'' domains : is the Web's Supreme Court turning conservative ?Not exactly : the score is more balanced than ever. Because this is the third time the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) rejects the opening of Pandora's box.Beyond the laconic comment of Chairman and Chief Internet Evangelist Vint Cerf ("This decision was the result of very careful scrutiny and consideration of all the arguments. That consideration has led a majority of the Board to believe that the proposal should be rejected"*), the ICANN gave us some good reasons, including :- "The ICM Application raises significant law enforcement compliance issues because of countries' varying laws relating to content and practices that define the nature of the application, therefore obligating ICANN to acquire a responsibility related to content and conduct.- The Board agrees with the reference in the GAC communiqué from Lisbon, that under the Revised Agreement, there are
Security watchers are calling on net governance body ICANN to adopt a new top level domain name to be used exclusively by registered banks and financial organisations. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has released a report on the well publicised attack on the internet’s backbone of DNS servers early in February. ICANN has finally firmed up in its battle with troublesome domain registrar Registerfly and looks ready to battle the company in court. In a letter from its powerhouse attorneys at Jones Day, ICANN accuses Registerfly of willfully refusing to comply with an accreditation audit as mandated in its Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA).

The Register reported yesterday that, despite being: the internet's instigator and, since 1998, its voluntary taskmaster, the US government finally agreed to transition its control over not-for-profit internet overseeing organisation ICANN, making the organisation a more international body. In an unintentional irony it noted that:Ultimately, what came out of a gathering of the (English-speaking) great and the good regarding the internet was two things: That the US government recognises it has to transition its role if it wants to keep the internet in one piece (and it then has to sell that decision to a mindlessly patriotic electorate)That ICANN has to open up and allow more people to decide its course if it is going to be allowed to become the internet's main overseeing organisationI suppose if you are called ICANN you cann do pretty much anything including inventing new English verbs! >>Technorati tags: Internet; ICANN>>IceRocket tags: Internet; ICANN
