      Be Prepared: Hurricanes
What is a hurricane many people ask…it’s actually quite simple; a hurricane is a rotating weather system that forms over water that has winds that reach a minimum speed of 74 miles per hour. Hurricanes are most dangerous because of wind but they also bring torrential rains and the danger of storm surge. Wind and water damage are what best categorize the worst of what hurricanes can do. Imagine, however, being at this particular beach where the Miami Hurricanes Cheerleaders and fearless leader Christina Demaria recently decided to do a photoshoot.” [H/T Uncoached] I could not possibly agree more with the folks at Uncoached. Today we are going to the Aronoff Center to see “Jersey Boys.” This is the last play of our “Broadway across America” series, and for the most part it has been very enjoyable. It started off schmaltzy, with “My Fair Lady” and “Camelot,” and picked up some steam with “Wicked” and “The Color Purple.” “The Drowsy Chaperone” was a dud, and “Sweeney Todd” was disappointi

      24/05/2008: Crusaders-Hurricanes 33-22 (Rugby Super 14 - Semifinale)
The Crusaders bounced back from last week's defeat to the Highlanders in the first Semi final of the 2008 Super 14 beating the Hurricanes by 33 points to 22. The result means that the 2008 Super 14 final will be held at the AMI Stadium in Christchurch and that means home advantage for the Crusaders. In late April, AccuWeather.com, led by Joe Bastardi, its chief meteorologist, issued a news release that was, to be kind, pure mush. Hurricanes Katrina, Rita Left Skin Rashes in Their Wake
Workers helping to rebuild New Orleans after hurricanes Katrina and Rita suffered from several different skin disorders, and new research suggests that many of the rashes were caused by some kind of insect bite."Dermatologic conditions have always been really common, but a systematic investigation had not really been done in the past," said study author Rebecca Noe, a staff epidemiologist with the National Center for Preparedness, Detection and Control of Infectious Disease at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. "When I did a literature search, I typically saw people saying 'rashes.' It was really general."The study was published in the November issue of the Archives of Dermatology. After the devastation of Katrina and Rita in August and September 2005, scientists had a chance to delve deeper.Twenty-two percent of diseases treated in the aftermath of the twin disasters were skin-related.At the end of September 2005, members of the CDC were asked by New Orle

      California Wildfires and Hurricanes
Sometimes Camille Paglia of Slate on-line magazine is right-on.  Here she is about the wildfires in California that famous people are using to promote Man-Bear-Pig:The recent horrific wildfires in California set off a gratuitous series of maunderings (from Jamie Lee Curtis to Thomas Friedman) about human culpability in global warming, the new liberal theology. Man is evil! Natural disasters are escalating! The world is coming to an end! Good lord, were all these people in a coma through the gigantic storms like Hurricane Camille in 1969? The destruction wrought by that Category 5 storm is chronicled in Philip D. Hearn's book, "Hurricane Camille: Monster Storm of the Gulf Coast," published three years ago. With winds of 200 miles per hour, Camille devastated 26 miles of Mississippi's coastline and killed 170 people. The tidal surge reached 35 feet, while the barometric pressure approached an all-time low. One of my prized possessions is a poster torn from a London new

      Canucks / Hurricanes Preview
Well here is a true test of where the Canucks are at at this point...by taking on the Hurricanes. The Canes have returned to their Cup contender form and are 4-1-3 to start the season. The Canucks are 4-4-0. So much can go wrong for the Nucks tonight. - Luongo isn't known for being sharp after a night off is he? - The Canucks hardly deserved to win their last game against Columbus, being outshot 14-0 in the second period, taking too many dumb penalties it seemed.- The Canes are on their game right now and the Canucks are not. I hope that changes tonight and they can put a better overall game together. But I am not counting on it.The Canes are good, and will burn their sorry asses if Vancouver wants to run around in their own zone and take too many penalties. The Canucks' PP is good for 6th in the NHL. The Canes are 2nd. Their penalty kill ranks are 16th and 17th overall respectively. The Canes lost their last 2 games in OT. They are going to be hungry tonight. My PredictionI'm just n

That's a graph of blogicito visitors for 30 days ending three days after Hurricane Felix. What a difference a hurricane makes. Too bad I wasn't charging admission to the blogicito. ;-)La Gringa had her 15 seconds of fame on CNN! The newscaster didn't seem too thrilled with my answers and demanded to know, "Why not?!" when I said we weren't going to evacuate. I was also contacted by email by the UK's BBC, but unfortunately my internet connection was out and I didn't get the email until it was too late.La Prensa reported that the supermarkets did a booming business from people stocking up for the duration. Sadly, the hardware stores weren't quite so lucky as very few people in Honduras feel the need to do any preparations for a hurricane. The news organizations went crazy with all sorts of exaggerated reports, even to the point of apparently showing video of the hurricane from other countries and calling it Honduras. But this joke was sent to me today that I couldn't pass up in regards to Sheila Jackson Lee's (U.S. Rep- Houston) comments last year about Hurricane names not be very racially fair because black people's names are never used. Anyways, a pathetic and irrelevant issue, so here is the joke:A black congresswoman (Sheila Jackson Lee) reportedly complainedthat the names of hurricanes are all Caucasian soundingnames. She would prefer some names that reflectAfrican-American culture such as: Chamiqua, Tanisha,Woeisha, Shaqueal, and Jamal. She would also like theweather reports to be broadcast in Language that streetpeople can understand because one of the problems in NewOrleans is that regular folks couldn't understand theseriousness of the situation due to the racially biasedlanguage of the weather report.I can hear it now: A weatherman in Houston reports..."Wazzup, mutha-fukkas! Cultural differences: Hurricanes
Image: National Hurricane Center, 09/04/07You know how we US Americans are. (Here I am stereotyping again. Just think "in general" so I don't have to write it each time.) We always have to DO SOMETHING. If a hurricane is coming, we worry, we look up the hurricane preparedness guidelines, we protect, we prepare, we evacuate. Not so with Hondurans for the most part. "Si Dios quiere" (if God wills it) is the rule of the day. I have to qualify that by saying that the Honduran government did seem to have an organized plan. I've never been anywhere near a Hurricane before. I was getting the National Hurricane Center email warnings every couple of hours instructing me to "immediately complete preparations for this catastrophic hurricane." Internet friends were giving me advice and links to hurricane preparedness sites. I was reading about tons of stuff that there was no way we could do in the amount of time that was left. I was getting really scared at the point when most of the predictio

The information reported about it, however, has not been sufficient to flesh out the major issues of the case. The case I am talking about involves the degenerate trial lawyer Gerald Maples. Maples, known for his class-action asbestos litigation, is now taking advantage of poor Hurricane Katrina victims. He should be embarrassed for what he is perpetrating, but like most lawyers, he has no shame. This time, Maples is suing 26 oil companies for contributing to Hurricane Katrina because of their greenhouse gas emissions. Not only should this be thrown out of Federal Court for clear lack of Standing, Maples should be sanctioned for filing a frivolous lawsuit. It is frivolous because there is ample case law preventing grievances such as these from being heard in Federal Court. Instead, the grievances posed in this case by the Katrina victims "is the function of Congress and the Chie

So far, 48 dead and 350 injured. My prayers are with them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At about 1 pm HST, a 7.5 earthquake hit the central coast of Peru causing damage to some of it’s buildings. Luckily, no one was reported injured. Hawaii residents are now being warned that this earthquake could possibly generate a tsunami which may hit the Hawaiian Islands around 2am, Thursday. I’ve been watching the news all afternoon and so far nothing has been confirmed. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Hurricanes, Earthquakes, and Meteors; oh my!
Sitting out on my porch tonight, enjoying the lovely sunset over the ocean and waiting for Hurricane Flossie, I saw a freakishly close meteorite (at least I think that’s what it was since I’ve not seen anything like that before) go down into the water, probably about 10 miles out, if that. I could see the large fireball streak down through the dusky sky, in a sort of serpentine curve, leaving a trail of white smoke in its wake. We live at altitude so I had a very good view. What’s weird is, it seemed to break apart as it came down, and one of the pieces just hung there in the sky, burning like a bright white piece of smoke or something, I don’t know; not moving, just hanging there, gradually streaking out horizontally as it was pulled by the wind. Maybe it was the setting sun behind a dense puff of smoke, but it sure looked weird. I watched it for about 20 minutes, half-expecting it to suddenly take off or something.   Ok, maybe I spend too much time o

There's nothing else unusual going on anywhere else in the house, so I figure I'll check the time in case there was a small earthquake. 7:28. During "Fat Walk" on ABC a bit over a half hour later there's a hurricane update.... oh, and by the way, there was a 5.3 quake about 20 miles south of Hilo on the Big Island at 7:28pm.... any other day and that'd been one of the first mentions on the 10 o'clock news, as a 5.3 is a once every year or two or three event if I recall correctly. Here's the LINK to the USGS Hawaii earthquake mapAnyway, the current thinking is the hurricane won't hit the island directly, but might generate surf and 40-50 mph winds on the southeast side as well as surf on most of the east side. No talk about the Kona side yet. More updates later, if I'm still up (I'm getting to where I actually go to bed around night news time -10pm here), I'll update any new news I

Hurricanes may be unlikely saviours of coral reefs - earth - 02 July 2007 - New Scientist Environment"Hurricanes Katrina and Rita may have been unlikely saviours for the coral reefs under their paths, say researchers. They have found evidence that the cooling effect hurricanes have on sea temperatures may help corals recover from the bleaching caused by warming oceans.Coral reefs get their colour from tiny algae called zooxanthellae that live within them. The corals and the algae live in symbiosis, but if the corals become stressed they can expel the algae – which results in coral bleaching. One source of stress to corals is high sea temperatures, which is why global warming is predicted to bring about widespread coral bleaching. In the North Atlantic, warmer temperatures at the ocean surface also help hurricanes form. Now, Derek Manzello, at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and colleagues have shown that hurricanes cool temperatures and may assist coral recovery

Sens 2 Hurricanes 0: In point form
      - It's amazing how loose Ottawa looks right now. On the offensive attack, they looked like they were playing pond hockey. It looked that easy for them. Their passes were crisp and their speed game was impressive. Ah, it's so easy to be loose when you're winning! The Sens have won 8 of their last 9.-It was a different story for the Hurricanes. They looked out of sync and frustrated. Whenever they generated a decent scoring chance tonight, Ray Emery stoned them. The Canes are now 6-5-0 in their last 11, and are in danger of missing the playoffs. At the same time, the teams around them-the Leafs and Canadiens- don't appear to be in the mood to put together win streaks.- Speaking of Ray Emery, it appears that the Sens no longer have problems in goal. Emery looks absolutely confident in the Sens' net as the starting goalie. In 43 games this season, Emery has a 25-13-2 record. He ranks 12th in the league in GAA (2.51), 5th overall in save percentage (.919) and 4th with shutouts (5). I'

      Hurricanes and hat-tricks
The week started fairly disappointingly - but what an end! Sunday saw Oasis Sun running well below what we’d hoped at Kempton. The only good thing is that Brett Doyle was a lot less disappointed and said we should step her up in trip. He feels that, given a better draw, she’ll acquit herself ok - so we’ll hopefully find something early in the New Year. Epineuse was another disappointment, but there was certainly something amiss after the week. We don’t seem to be able to find out what - we have our own blood testing equipment, but nothing showed there or in a scope. Maybe only time will tell. Hotchpotch ran well enough on Tuesday and would definitely have been third if he hadn’t been hampered in the closing stages. He’ll find a race soon. Monashee Prince just didn’t get the 1 1/4 miles, having travelled well, and we’ll drop him back and find a race soon over seven furlongs or a mile. Wednesday was our big day, and luckily we weren’t

      Construction Costs and Hurricanes
The impact of Katrina on home building resources will be significant, undoubtably causing a noticeable increase in the cost of building materials. Even though the hurricane winds didn't destroy as many houses as Andrew did in South Florida in 1992, many more houses that survived intact have been rendered uninhabitable by extended submersion in floodwaters. When rebuilding starts, lumber and other buildings materials will be in great demand (read: cost much more). At the same time, the Southeastern US is a source of a great deal of raw lumber and is home to many lumber production facilities. Some of these facilities were damaged by Katrina and will be unable to process trees into lumber for some time. Finally, hurricanes fell many mature trees - trees that will rot if not soon harvested. Ironically, these same felled trees block access into the lumber forests and make their harvesting more difficult and expensive.Read the NAHB's take on Katrina here: http://www.nahb.org/news_details
