The Hummingbird's Daughter
Reading a Mexican book might just be a little difficult. Especially if there is too much of Spanish. Thats the first thing that struck me in The Hummingbird's Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea, a book which is otherwise mesmerizing in its magical landscape. The Hummingbird's Daughter in the novel is Teresita, a precocious child who lives with her abusive aunt until she is rescued by the revered

A Nice Hummingbird Feeder Can Add Peace To Your Home Garden
If you live in an area where there are many of these little beauties, a hummingbird feeder can do a lot of the peace and tranquility of your outdoor space. Hummingbird feeders can draw these lovely little birds to your home, and give you more opportunities than ever before to view them and their petite loveliness in action. If you are interested in using a hummingbird feeder so that you can draw more hummingbirds to your home, you are on the right track. At the same time, it is important to understand that these birds are attracted to bright, colorful flowers-for a reason. In most cases the brighter the flowers, the sweeter the nectar inside it. For this reason, only certain types of hummingbird feeders will attract these birds, and if you don't make them right and fill them right, the chan

The Red Coat and the Hummingbird
Although this letter, The Red Coat And The Hummingbird, reminded me of the popular version of the Grimm Brothers’ Little Red Riding Hood, the brothers were born a century after the Contessa’s writings. The original version is said to be similar to an Aame-Thompson type 3333 called, “The Glutton/Red Riding Hood”. One can only wonder how the writings of the Late Contessa Llwaxanna Loveless Von Bralispth could have impacted on this tale. I initially quoted from her diary how young Llwaxanna Goochie Von Bogg- Stuppor found her Red Coat. In this letter she talks about her second adventure as a child. “Mother asked me to take some food to Aunt Isabella’s for the feast on Pastele (Romanian for the traditional 3 day Easter Celebration). She had carefully packed some chicken, pork and bread in a basket and told me that Aunt Isabella was expecting me before sundown. She helped me put my red coat on as I past through the doorway. This was the first time mother

Hummingbird Pictures Like You’ve Never Seen Before
Allow me to go off topic… just once. Recently one of my best friend and I, had the chance to rescue a hummingbird who went straight into our office window. The pictures were taken 3-4 weeks ago, but it’s only when I copied my SD card over to my PC and looked at the photos on my LCD that I realized how spectacular they were. I had to share. We found Hummy lying on the grass. We couldn’t find any sign of external injuries, but he was clearly knocked out. We gently took him off the grass and the little guy showed no signs of fear. As found on Wikipedia, Hummingbirds can flap their wings up to 80 times a second, that’s 4800 FPM (flaps per minute). According to bestnest.com, there are over 300 species of hummingbirds but only 16 can be found in North America. Depending on the angle, Hummy’s plumage appears completely different. The name Hummingbird comes from the characteristic hum made by their wings. After about 30 minutes, Hummy went back to his normal flapping life

Gift To The Hummingbird
Tzunuum, the hummingbird, was created by the Great Spirit as a tiny, delicate bird with extraordinary flying ability. She was the only bird in the kingdom who could fly backwards and who could hover in one spot for several seconds. The hummingbird was very plain. Her feathers had no bright colors, yet she didn't mind. Tzunuum took pride in her flying skill and was happy with her life despite her looks. When it came time to be married, Tzunuum found that she had neither a wedding gown nor a necklace. She was so disappointed and sad that some of her best friends decided to create a wedding dress and jewelry as a surprise.Ya, the vermilion-crowned flycatcher wore a gay crimson ring of feathers around his throat in those days. He decided to use it as his gift. So he tucked a few red plumes in his crown and gave the rest to the hummingbird for her necklace. Uchilchil, the bluebird, generously donated several blue feathers for her gown. The vain motmot, not to be outdone, offered more turquo

La Gringa saves a hummingbird
Hummingbird trapped in the houseAnother exciting day in La Gringa's house. We had the window screens open to capture a little more breeze. Later I heard a flapping noise. Going to investigate, I found this hummingbird desperately trying to get out the closed windows. I couldn't get a much better look at the hummingbird in person than is shown in the photo. The only thing I could see clearly was the brightly colored tail. I think it was a Rufous-tailed hummingbird, because, well, it had a reddish-brown tail and they are known to be in this area. Daniel from Hondubirding is probably cringing at my identification.I have to apologize for the quality of the video. First, there was the problem that the light was bright outside the windows. Then there was the problem of filming with one hand while rescuing with the other.Anyway, now if you ever have a hummingbird or any other type of bird trapped in your house, you'll know what to do. In a pinch, a broom can be used instead of

Collapsing time... and Hummingbird
I was in an old building with large windows, right next to Naka-Meguro train station. It was a typical Toyko summer, super humid, and the windows were open to try and create a breeze (there was no air-con). A bird flew in and settled on a desk before looking around. When it noticed its salaryman surroundings (shady, but sllim-food-pickings), it decided to leave. It immediately crashed into a closed window, then looped out and tried again, and then again, smacking into more and more invisible walls. As it grew crazier in its flight it drew more attention, and people were trying to open all the windows they could. They were also getting brooms and shaking newspapers and waving their arms to try and direct the little bird out. Nothing worked. Eventually, after an especially loud thump on the window, it fell to the floor. (It remained on its feet, like an aging professional boxer near career’s end.) The bird, a sparrow, was near me at this point, so I slowly shifted, ca

Hummingbird Facts - Thursday Thirteen
1. There are seventeen species of hummingbirds in North America. 2. Hummingbirds flap their wings 50 to 200 times per second. Generally the faster time is in courtship. 3. They can fly up, down, right, left, backwards, upside down and even loop-de-loops! Amazing! 4. They have tiny little feet that are only good for perching, scratching or preening. This means if they wish to move, even a few inches, they must fly. 5. Hummers can starve to death in about an hour. Oh Dear! 6. They eat every 10 minutes throughout the day. 7. Even though they are tiny birds, they consume up to 50% of their body weight in a day. Little pigs aren’t they? LOL! 8. Their main diet is sugar which they get from plant nectar or from kind-hearted people with feeders. 9. They also eat bugs for protein. 10. Hummingbirds have grooves on the sides of their tongues. This is to help catch insects. 11. Their tongues can take up to 13 licks a second. 12. Hummers have very good memories and will even be able to remember w

Hummingbird on a Heliconia
Hummingbird on Heliconia latispatha, We see so many hummingbirds this time of year but catching them with the camera is difficult. El Jefe was able to take this photo a few weeks ago with the old camera. I love the colors of this iridescent jewel-colored one in the photo. One once buzzed around my head and even though the camera was in my hand, I couldn't get it turned on fast enough. They often hover around the Etlingera Elatior right outside my estudio (studio) window for a minute or more, but when I open the screen to get a shot, they fly away.Etlingera elatior, (Bastón de la Reina) a favorite of hummingbirdsThis year I've seen two unusual types that I haven't seen before around the Etlingera. Both had curved beaks. One had a short curved beak and was as small as my thumb. The other had a very long arched beak and was quite a bit larger. They were both more brownish.I won't hazard a guess to try to identify the one in the top picture. A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern
