Shuttle's mission to repair Hubble telescope delayed till Oct. 8
An Aug. 28 mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope has been moved to Oct.8 because of delays in building fuel tanks needed for the mission, NASA officials announced Thursday. The shuttle's external tank was redesigned for safer launches after the 2003 Columbia accident. Falling foam from the tank punched a hole in the shuttle's wing, later exposing it to dangerous gases and heat on

Plethora of interacting galaxies on Hubble's birthday
NASA Releases Largest Collection of Hubble Images In celebration of the 18th anniversary of Hubble’s launch, NASA released a series of 59 new images of colliding galaxies. Astronomy textbooks typically present galaxies as staid, solitary, and majestic island worlds of glittering stars. But galaxies have a wild side. They have flirtatious close encounters that sometimes end in grand mergers

Hubble maps the changing constellation of Internet 'black holes'
You're trying to log on to a Web site and it's not working. You try again and again. But persistence doesn't pay off. The site you want is inexplicably, frustratingly, out of reach. The other computer might just be turned off, but the causes could be more mysterious. At any given moment, a proportion of computer traffic ends up being routed into information black holes. These are situations where a path between two computers does exist, but messages – a request to visit a Web site, an outgoing e-mail – get lost along the way.A University of Washington system named Hubble looks for these black holes and maps them on a Web site, providing an ever-changing constellation of the Internet's weak points. The Hubble map is posted at hubble.cs.washington.edu/, where visitors can view a map of pr

StarGaze: Hubble's View of the Universe
The Hubble Space Telescope was fraught with problems following its placement in Earth orbit after its 1990 launch. Once the problems were resolved, the telescope began receiving some of the most striking space photographs ever captured. Located outside of the distorting lens of Earth's atmosphere, the Hubble can see deeper into space and record more clearly than any existing telescope. This video will take you on a tour of "outer space's greatest hits", thanks to this marvel of modern technology.-_Hubble_s_View_of_the_Universe.part3.rar.html-_Hubble_s_View_of_the_Universe.part4.rar.html-_Hubble_s_View_of_the_Universe.part5.rar.html-_Hubble_s_View_of_the_Universe.part1.rar.html-_Hubble_s_View_of_the_Universe.part2.rar.html

      Hubble Space Telescope Papercraft
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a telescope in orbit around the Earth, named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. Its position outside the Earth's atmosphere provides significant advantages over ground-based telescopes — images are not blurred by the atmosphere, there is no background from light scattered by air, and the Hubble can observe ultra-violet light that is normally absorbed by the ozone layer in observations made from Earth. Since its launch in 1990, it has become one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy.Make your very own hand-held Hubble telescope model. There are three levels of difficulties. The easiest is the PVC model which will require PVC pipes. The second is a paper model with 3o pieces of parts. Last but not the least is an expert papermodel with 300 pieces of parts that will require 30 hours to build. You have the option of also assembling the internal structure of the telescope, including the mirror and the instrument bay, which fits ins

700 MB Picture Taken By Hubble Space Telescope
Trust me I do not have any extra ordinary interest in galaxies and pictures taken through space telescopes but often one finds things that are worth mentioning to the masses. The thing to wonder is that what is so interesting about the galaxy picture you see above? The Sharpest Galaxy Image Ever Taken The picture you see above is rescaled and resized version of the sharpest image ever taken of the large “grand design” spiral galaxy M81. The actual size of the original picture that was taken through the Hubble Space Telescope is no less than 700 MB alone (almost 1 GB wow!). The image was released on 9 June 2007 at the American Astronomical Society Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Hubble Telescope and The Spiral Galaxy Thanks to the sharp view of the Hubble Space Telescope it was successful enough to resolve individual stars, along with open star clusters, globular star clusters, and even glowing regions of fluorescent gas of the galaxy that is located 11.6 million light-yea

New Space Telescope will outdistance Hubble
I was just listening to a streaming NPR story about the Hubble and evidently it had a serious electrical short circuit that blew a fuse and shut down the three main cameras. The Hubble has 2 identical electrical systems and it was already running on the secondary electrical system as there had been problems with the primary avionics electrical system last summer. They are working on it and are fairly secure in the knowledge that they can repair it. One huge plus I learned was that NASA has decided to do another maintenance mission via Shuttle and they have 2 new cameras they plan on installing during that mission. It is tentatively scheduled to take place in 20 months. I also learned that we have already done 4 maintenance missions to Hubble. The person being interviewed was NASA's Michael Weiss Deputy Director of the Hubble Space Telescope. Over the last few months I have said numerous times how shortsighted I thought it was to not be planning anymore updates or even maintenance mis

Celestia - Your Own Hubble Telescope
Google Earth junkies! Leave the planet with Celestia! Are you one of those people that played for two hours with Google Earth when you first got it? I know I did. Celestia is very much like that.See a few quotes from the Celestia web site below. But first, let me tell you that it's an Open Source program! It will run on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All movement in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.Celestia is expandable. Celestia comes with a large catalog of stars, galaxies, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft. If that's not enough, yo
