Thousands of miles away and three decades apart, the rescue of hostages in Colombia and the killing of Israeli hostages by Lebanese terrorists have some unexpected links as well profound differences. Barring last minute glitches, the Israelis are expected within a week to release five terrorists, including the notorious Samir Kuntar, who bashed a four year old girl to death, in exchange for the bo
I would have thought with former war hero Ehud Barak on board as Defense Minister, the Olmert Administration would have become a bit wiser when dealing with hostage crises. Unfortunately the recent "live murders for deceased hostages" idea must rank as one of the most foolish foreign policy ideas that I have ever heard. While the hallowed remains of fallen soldiers should always be sought out, th
First accounts on the rescue operation, now being provided by Colombian military officials, while still veiled on some key points, suggest that Colombia carried out a spectacularly successful sting operation in which Colombian commandos pretended to be FARC officials come to take the hostages to a new location for a possible diplomatic negotiated exchange. The first reports about the Colombian military’s rescue of the 15 hostages held by FARC (in Spanish) indicate an impressive intelligence operation. The hostages were held in three separate locations. Colombian intelligence had infiltrated one of the FARC fronts holding the hostages as well as the FARC Secretariat. They told the front commander “Cesar” that the hostages were being

A rise in data kidnappings makes data protection more important than ever. It's little more than electronic thuggery. Demanding payment for the safe return of your data is one of the newest scams perpetrated by cyber-criminals. And they're using ransomware - malware that's expressly designed to encrypt your data - to do it.In a ransomware attack, the criminal will send the victim an email saying that they have control of their system, and the victim can't get any data on their system unless they pay the criminal through an untraceable wire service.

A recent story that went almost un-noticed (to my utter amazement). Opec has all but admitted that they intend to hold oil prices above $100 a barrel for all of 2008 and that they will only consider increasing production in 2009 pending a "new American President".Isn't it amazing that our enemies can hold our economy hostage to try and force the political outcome they want......and our politicians are silent?~Sonlit
Eugene Armstrong - Our hearts bleed and our prayers go out to the families of these men that had to live through this nightmare. I post these on here so people never forget nor ever forgive the barbaric acts commited against innocent non-military men, by a group of very angry people that like to hide beneath masks and a veil of mis-guided religious duty.
I know the family of one of these executed hostages came out to say they find forgiveness in their hearts towards the executioners, but I can not see how monsters can ever be forgiven by anyone. These men went to the middle East to work, not to fight any battle, they had no political or military agenda.
After being taken hostage, Armstrong was beheaded on 20 September 2004 by the Tawhid and Jihad militant group led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is believed to have personally beheaded Armstrong. The following day, the group beheaded fellow American Jack Hensley, and threatened to kill their third hostage, Briton Ken

Five Western security contractors kidnapped a year ago in Iraq are still alive, according to their employer, Crescent Security.
The four Americans and an Austrian colleague employed by Kuwait-based Crescent Security Group were among 14 people kidnapped Nov. 16, 2006, by men in Iraqi police uniforms who ambushed a convoy they were escorting near the southern Iraqi border city of Safwan.
Crescent managing partner Franco Picco said the company has been working with the FBI to find the men. They are alive and “we do have an idea where they are.”
The last indication that the men were alive came in January, in a video recording showing all five speaking briefly and saying they were being treated well. Since then, State Department officials have indicated they believe the men are still alive, according to some family members.

UPDATE: The troops had not been kidnapped after all:
The militants had claimed they had seized 300 men in south Waziristan.
But the military said the soldiers in the convoy which had lost contact were sheltering in a valley during a storm and would return to base on Friday.
"There is no suggestion of kidnapping or fighting," Major General Waheed Arshad told the AFP news agency.

Some of her records state ______ __________ then other records give her adopted name ______ ________ then there are a few that both names together and use the term "also known as" , one would think they could put it together as an adoption situation but instead the hospital called together their legal team and they have been in a meeting since 3:00 this afternoon. They are not getting anywhere because adoption records are sealed and the birth name no longer exists in records. Looking for love in all the wrong places... But it has to be said: If you fall for something like this, you only have yourself to blame. Going to Mali to meet an internet bride and collect a dowry of gold bars worth £40,000...?? What the hell was this guy thinking?
A lonely Australian farmer was held hostage in Mali for 12 days in an internet bride scam that almost cost him his life.
Des Gregor, 56, had travelled to Mali to meet his supposed bride, Natacha, whom he had met on the internet, and collect a dowry of gold bars worth £40,000.
But when he arrived, the wheat and sheep farmer was kidnapped by a gang of armed bandits who bound him, beat him with a machete and stole his cash and credit cards.
The men also threatened to hack Gregor's limbs off with a machete unless he paid them a £40,000 ransom.
The scam was stopped when Australian and Malian police, alerted by Gregor's family in Australia, tricked the kidnappers into taking Gregor to the Canadian Embassy to c
I wish I hadn't been so busy in the past two weeks, otherwise, I would've had more time to blog about this horrifying case of at least 21 Korean relief workers who were taken prisoner in Afganistan by Taliban terrorists. To make matters worse, two of them may have already been murdered by the terrorist filth. The Korean government must not bow to these monsters who've taken these heroes hostage, and should do whatever they can to rescue the hostages.
Update on this story. No hostages have been freed so far, and a second Korean was executed yesterday by the Taliban:
Police at daybreak Tuesday discovered the body of a second South Korean hostage slain by the Taliban, officials said. A purported Taliban spokesman had said the man was killed because the Afghan government failed to release imprisoned insurgents.
...
The South Korean Foreign Ministry confirmed Tuesday that 29-year-old Shim Sung-min's body had been found. The former information technology worker was volunteering with a South Korean church group on an aid mission to Afghanistan.
...
A purported Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said senior Taliban leaders decided to kill the male captive Monday evening because the government had not met Taliban demands to trade prisoners for the Christian volunteers, who were in their 12th day of captivity Monday.
"The Kabul and Korean governments are lying and cheating. They did not meet their promise of releasing Taliban prisoners
The first South Korean hostage has been executed by the Taliban:
The bullet-riddled body of a South Korean hostage was found by police Wednesday in central Afghanistan after a purported Taliban spokesman said the militants had killed one of the captives.
The male victim had 10 bullet holes in his head, chest and stomach, and was discovered in the Mushaki area of Qarabagh district in Ghazni province, said police officer Abdul Rahman.
The Taliban spokesman said earlier that the hostage was was killed because Afghan authorities hadn't met their demands to release other militants from prison.
Some hostages have supposedly been freed, so it wouldn't surprise me if all sorts of demands have already been met by South Korea, showing the Taliban scum and the rest of that ilk that their methods work. It wouldn't be the first time.

I am reluctant to give Prospero's Books more publicity but their marketing techniques really, really offend me. If I were in Kansas City, I would make it a point to avoid the store just based on what I've seen from them in the last few days. By now most of us know of the fake book burning that the store owners used to bring attention to the fact that they have some 20,000 books in stock that they can't easily move. In some misguided attempt to place blame for their excess inventory on someone other than themselves, the guys decided to point the finger at a reading public that is somehow letting them down by not reading or appreciating books to the degree that the owners think they should. So Prospero's decided to burn a few books and to threaten to continue the process unless buyers showed up to take the rest of them off their hands. “Has it ever occurred to you that we work so hard to protect what was never ever really ours?”
The man had a gun, what were they going to do? Disagree?
Which is not to say he didn’t have a point.
It’s just bad manners to try and press a point when you’re holding a loaded gun. Doesn’t really allow the other person opportunity to properly consider an argument. Or courage. How many people would argue in the presence of a gun? Even if they happened to have one of their own nudging the smalls of their backs. Not many, not any actually.
A person’s ability to spit words pales in comparison to a gun’s ability to spit lead. A harsh word might sting for years after it’s been forgotten by the one who uttered it but the permanence of a smooth bullet’s impact ensures we don’t get to feel anything at all.
Nobody accepts that choice willingly when the gun is in someone else’s hand.
So they stayed down like they were told to and waited or prayed or wished or hoped for the

One of my best friends is from SOuth Africa. A couple of years ago he came to the states and we got him a visa approved for 3 years. A couple months back he flew home to visit family for Christmas ans although his Visa was good for another year, the South Africa embassy would not allow him to return to the United States. They said that they felt he had been here long enough. This sucks, if the US says he can come back why should some third world country tell him he can't leave. Washington, April 21 (Xinhua) A gunman killed a male hostage and committed suicide after barricading himself with two hostages inside a building at NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Texas Friday.
However, the second female hostage appeared to be unharmed, police said.
“The suspect shot himself one time on the head,” Houston police captain Dwayne Ready said at a press conference.
“Also on the same floor, one hostage was shot dead. We believe that may have occurred in the early minutes of this whole ordeal. And another hostage who was unharmed (was found) taped and (is) being looked at by our paramedics,” he said.
The gunman man, believed to be between 50 and 60, was a contract worker with NASA.
He initially barricaded on the second floor of the building 44 of the space centre and police said they heard two shots inside the building. The motive of the gunman was still unknown.

So it has pretty much ended up with Iraq exchanging a captured Iranian official and we have agreed to allow Iran to visit some of their people we have in custody in Iraq. I imagine this was the outcome that Iran wanted all along. And of course Iraq and our government have denied any tit for tat with Iran. I have to wonder if Nancy Pelosi fits into this somehow. I was not surprised by her trip as I expected the most powerful (self proclaimed) woman ever to take a shall we say more active lead in foreign affairs. This is the problem when you elect a spoiled rich brat President. He whines and whines and acts selfish until he gets want he wants.Congress gave him a funding bill; one with a SUGGESTED date for withdrawal. This is not even as fierce and binding as the people want. The people want out.Yes, I understand the President of the United States is the commander-in-chief, but when the people loose faith in their leadership, they look for new leadership (which is why, I believe, interest in the 2008 presidential race has started so early.) Since the people couldn't throw Bush out in 2006, they threw out his party as a sign to Bush that if they could, they'd send him packing back to Texas. The Democrats are the new leadership and they have the power of the people behind them. The President has been defeated, faith in him has been lost. It is time for the President to began facing reality. The war in Iraq has been won and the post-war castles in the sky this man has built are unachievable. Stop
The botched US raid that led to the hostage crisis : "A failed American attempt to abduct two senior Iranian security officers on an official visit to northern Iraq was the starting pistol for a crisis that 10 weeks later led to Iranians seizing 15 British sailors and Marines.Early on the morning of 11 January, helicopter-born US forces launched a surprise raid on a long-established Iranian liaison office in the city of Arbil in Iraqi Kurdistan. They captured five relatively junior Iranian officials whom the US accuses of being intelligence agents and still holds. In reality the US attack had a far more ambitious objective, The Independent has learned. The aim of the raid, launched without informing the Kurdish authorities, was to seize two men at the very heart of the Iranian security establishment."
Propaganda Confession VideosThe Brits were likely too close to Irananian government protected smuggling support to terrorists in Iraq. Suffice it to say that the Brits were in Iraq's waters when captured, while Iran has historically disputed these boundaries. Therefore, Iran asserts their justification for kidnapping the Brits for trespassing... One of the 15 British service members held captive in Iran appeared Friday on the government's Arabic-language TV and apologized for entering Iranian waters "without permission."The serviceman, Royal Marine rifleman Nathan Thomas Summers, said he was aware that the incident in which he was seized was the second time since 2004 that British military personnel had entered Iranian waters."Again I deeply apologize for entering your waters," Summers said in the clip broadcast on Al-Alam television. "We trespassed without permission."Summers was shown sitting with another male serviceman and the female British sailor Faye Turney against a floral cu
Second ‘confession’ letter released questioning UK’s presence in Iraq
The Iranian hostage crisis took a sinister turn last night when Tehran withdrew an earlier offer to release one of the 15 captive sailors and marines and issued a second, strangely-worded letter in her name calling for Britain to withdraw from Iraq.
The letter, signed by Leading Seaman Faye Turney, the only woman in the naval crew seized last Friday, was addressed to “representatives of the House of Commons”. Although the letter was handwritten, it was stilted and lacked the personal tone of the first letter, sent to her family the day before. The second letter appeared to have been dictated to her.
“Unfortunately during the course of our mission we entered Iranian waters. Even through our wrongdoing, they have still treated us well and humanely, which I am and always will be eternally grateful,” the letter said.
“I ask representatives of the House of Commons after the

My makeup is up in the master bathroom... in the master bedroom... behind the bedroom door that I'm currently keeping an eye on as I sit here, balanced on the edge of the couch at the foot of the stairs so I can continually glance up and make sure my bedroom door stays closed. The front door, just 4 feet away from me is wide open and my purse is outside on the front step.Five minutes ago I was half naked in my kitchen clutching yesterdays clothes to my chest. I have those same clothes on now and it's a good thing I didn't spill spaghetti sauce on them yesterday because I damn well would be wearing spaghetti sauce today if I had.You see.... after blogging this morning I had another cup of coffee and read the news and a couple blogs. I then did the dishes, wiped down the counters and threw a load of clothes in the dryer. I then proceeded to the bedroom where I stripped out of my clothes, put on new underwear and my bra and washed my face. As I entered the walk-in closet I smelled a

Blackmail, a hostage, a little extorsion and some stealing did the trick. These girls have something Diesel doesn't. Or at least so they say.All this is being streamed on line, starting Monday 22nd of January.People arriving now at the website www.diesel.com can not only interact with the girls (and our poor sales rep) thorough alive chat, but can actually choose the camera angle they are going to be viewing from. There's a video that shows how the kidnapping happened: Crime ReconstructionCheck it now, because it's not clear how long they can last. Thanks Martina
Right after Ford put put out its horrible quarterly numbers, the folks at Goldman Sach upgraded the stock from "sell" to "neutral". Maybe someone spiked the punch at the investment bank's office party. Hopefully, Goldman does not do banking work for Ford. The basic reason for the change of heart is that the restructuring at Ford will overwhelm its poor sales. The company has said that its market share will probably drop from the current level of 17% to settle at 14% in the US.A number of astute observers have noted that restructuring will not save Ford. Cutting costs is not a successful long-term strategy of products don't sell.Fitch, the rating service, has taken a much more sane approach to Ford's problems. The credit rating agendy put Ford on its negative credit watch list. Fitch made the additional note that "unsecured holders would recover approximately 68% in a bankruptcy scenario". Standard & Poor's made a similar call on Ford's propects. Quite a contrast to Goldman's view

I believe there are many important lessons to be learned from the whole Ducat deception thing, and that we will do well taking these lessons to heart (even if you're not a Filipino). Lets look at a few of these, shall we?
