Last night I went to see a friend of mine who just had her baby... she was SUPPOSED to have her baby 4 weeks before me, but no. She had her early, making my due date seem like an eternity away. Her water broke after being brushed off by our local hospital and she ended up being rushed to the hospital an hour away... a very dramatic entrance her daughter made. Anyway. A few of us went to see her

We mostly picture hospital settings as cold and clinical - not necessarily places where holistic energy healing takes place. But many hospitals are embracing Reiki and Therapeutic Touch as adjunct healing modalities to assist patients in feeling and sleeping better.Close to 12 years ago I had a total abdominal hysterectomy at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, and with the assistance of

A U.S. federal government survey showed that many hospital patients are dissatisfied with aspects of their care. Medical experts said that some of the complaints bore directly on the quality of care.
Patients reported that they had not received adequate pain medication after surgery and that they did not understand the instructions they received when discharged from the hospital.
In the average hospital, 33 percent of patients would not recommend the institution where they had been treated to friends and relatives. More than 25 percent said nurses had not always communicated well with them.

Recently car parking charges at Welsh hospitals have been abolished, leading to a row between the UK and Welsh Health Ministers.UK Health Minister Ben Bradshaw believes that it doesn't make sense to "subsidise" car parks when the money could be spent on patient healthcare, although this was countered by Welsh Health Minister Edwina Hart saying"The statement actually sounds like sour grapes from the Department of Health because they've been probably having a lot of flak because they haven't looked at these issues themselves." Elsewhere across the UK hospital parking charges vary greatly:England - parking can cost up to £4 per hourScotland - a £3 a day cap on parkingNorthern Ireland - similar to England in that local health managers decide on the feesSo what do you think? In an attempt to cut costs and reduce medical waste, many hospitals are recycling single-use medical devices ranging from scissors and scrubs to the blades surgeons use to saw through bones.
The practice is legal as long as certain FDA guidelines are followed. But the practice has raised concerns about safety. Medical device makers say their single-use products pose a higher risk of failure and harm when recycled.
Products labeled for single use are usually not designed to hold up to harsh sterilization chemicals and processes. Even when the devices are sterilized, blood, tissue or other bodily fluids remaining on porous surfaces could allow transmission of viral and bacterial infections, according to device makers.

Having worked for a hospital in an IT job and then serving shortly as a volunteer firefighter I have grown to hate hospitals. The nurses, doctors and general staff always seem to be on the losing edge of frustration and take it out on everyone around them.
When I was working in the IT department of a hospital the nurses would destroy the printers and take out all their frustration and aggression on the paper trays. It got so bad that we actually taped a nurse beating the printer with its own paper tray. We called The Society for the Protection of Printers (SPP) but that achieved nothing.
My attitude was changed yesterday when Jodi went for reconstructive Knee surgery. The admitting staff, nurses, doctors were amazing. I have never seen in my life such professional and caring treatment. Even the guys doing the valet parking were nice. Everyone was so concerned for not only my wife’s well being but mine as well. In an effort to become more efficient, Community Health Systems agreed to sell nine of its smaller hospitals to Capella Healthcare for $315 million.
"Most of the hospitals were smaller facilities located in smaller rural markets," said Robert Hawkins of Stifel Nicolaus & Co. "These facilities, which made up the original base of Community Health, typically have lower margins, have been difficult to build larger medical staffs and have limited upside potential."
Capella, which is privately held, has a different strategy and these small
We are all aware that the lack of beds for patients who need to be admitted in hospitals today have to wait in line to be accommodated. While the issue is supposedly about the lack of beds for patients who go to the hospitals, the thing is there may be another side of the problem that exists.
For patients who are lined-up to be admitted this is a given. But for the people who are already lying on the beds, some doctors and physicians seem to have a problem on finding out when they can be discharged to make room for patients who have diagnosed problems.
This is termed as bed blocking for patients who have no problems. Overstaying seems to be like renting out the bed space which could be of use to other more needy patients.
Most hospitals run at 85pc capacity as keeping large numbers of beds empty makes no sense.
But if there are no community placements available, or a residential home is unwilling to take a patient on, the system becomes choked with patients. Add to that a rush of i

In Europe, the intervention is known as 'search and destroy.' Search for every source of drug-resistant bacteria coming into a hospital and destroy opportunities for the superbugs to spread. It's how countries from the Netherlands to England have battled the growing threat posed by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and brought soaring infection rates under control. Now, Loyola University Health System and three local Veterans Affairs facilities are embracing the tactic. Come November, Loyola will start testing all hospital patients for MRSA and taking aggressive steps to prevent its transmission. Hines VA Hospital near Maywood and the North Chicago and Jesse Brown VA Medical Centers implemented what's known as 'universal screening' for MRSA at the end of September.'It's a safety decision: We want to do what's in the best interest of our patients,' said Dr. Paul Whelton, Loyola's chief executive, who announced the new policy Monday. The four health facilities ar

He found a place in Norway that provided the treatment he needed. He booked his flight and off he went. Why did he choose to travel rather than get treatment locally? He is like many people from Britain, Canada, and the United States that are becoming medical tourists. In the British man’s case, he wanted to go to Norway in order to avoid a growing concern over a very contagious germ called MRSA that plagues many hospitals in Britain and other countries. There are over 5,000 deaths in hospitals a year in Britain caused by infections people contracted while staying in a hospital. Norway has the lowest percentage of MRSA infections in Europe and has become a destination for those looking for quality and safe healthcare practices.Today, over 1.3 million medical tourists are seeking low-cost, high quality healthcare options in top t

Australian Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott today called for the establishment of independent boards to govern hospitals. The changes will be part of the next five-year Commonwealth-state health agreement Federal funding would be withdrawn from hospitals that did not agree to the boards.Abbott says the purpose of the independent boards is to reduce bureaucracy and make public hospitals more efficient and responsive. "The board and [the] CEO will have control over budgets and make decisions about what happens in hospitals," he said.Federal Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd said that the plan would create more, not less bureaucracy. "Not only are we going to have thousands of federal bureaucrats, thousands of state health bureaucrats, but now a new layer of bureaucracy as well," he said.

The U.S. News & World Report has announced the results of its annual survey of the Best Hospitals in the U.S. Johns Hopkins in Baltimore has again come up on top, followed by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. The survey ranks the best places to seek medical care, not the best places to work for as a nurse, but often most of the top hospitals also offer superb nursing opportunities. After you look up the survey, check out this interesting article, "Your New Best Friends, the Nurses", as well.

Seriously, what the heck?Gosh, I was worried for my safety, then I saw the super-hero. But then, he made me think about burning alive! So, anyway, I see my therapist four times a week now....
With a nursing shortage expected to intensify as baby boomers age and the need for health care grows, hospital operators are rethinking the way they recruit and retain nurses. They're getting creative. Hospitals are holding breakfasts and other social based recruiting events in an effort to liven up the traditional stiff and formal practices they're typically used to doing.
Glenrose Rehabilitation hospital in Canada recently started using Nintendo Wii consoles to help it’s patients with movement or balance issues, and so far, this method has proved to be successful: Don Simoneau, an occupational therapist at the Glenrose, said he has used the technology on only about five patients in the past two and a half months, but already the 200 hospital therapists are clamouring to be involved with the Wii equipment. I think that the hospitals where I live are light years behind such innovation, but it’s nice to see console games helping people get better. And Nintendo gets, yet again, free publicity ;)

Not so long ago we featured the antics of Kings College Hospital London in our piece - on Nigel Heaton . Global Hospitals a group I would never choose for any of my relatives in India has now bagged a significant amount of money. Having the blood of two patients on their hands means nothing to them - they happily move on without any recourse in the law or the Indian/British governments. We are all still waiting to hear the answers to each of the questions put to them. Professor Catto who works at Kings College Hospital graeme.catto@kcl.ac.uk himself and decided to refuse the evidence presented to them. At least though he was finally able to find his pen to sign the letter to the family. Its all really about money in the end especially for Global Hospitals. The fact that two patients died due to their lax attitude and thirst for experimentation is of course placed by the wayside. By the way, if I was to go to Kolkatta and become ill, I would rather be treated by the Calcutta Rescue fun
Nursing shortages are nothing new. For years, U.S. hospitals have imported nurses from Canada, the Philippines and elsewhere to fill vacancies. But an aging baby boomer population and aging nursing work force are combining to create an unprecedented crisis that could lead to more medical mistakes and even patient deaths, experts say.

A deadly bacterium known as Klebsiella pneumoniae is believed to have killed some 120-200 patients in hospitals across the country. “Between 400 to 500 people have been infected by the bug, and 30 to 40 percent of them have already died. However, it is important to note that most of them were in a serious condition, and some were suffering from prior medical conditions,” said Prof. Yehuda Carmeli, the head of the epidemiology unit at the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv. According to Carmeli, most of those infected have been hospitalized for over 25 days, and their average age stood at 74-75. The virulent stain of bacteria is resistant to all kinds of antibiotics, and has already spread in many hospitals across Israel.
Health Minister Yacov Ben Yizri on Wednesday rejected accusations that his ministry had underestimated the scope of the outbreak, saying the case was kept a secret to prevent mass panic. “It is true that the bug infects people who have been hosp

Photo: terragalleriaFor some time now I have been reading editorials and letters to editors in different Maui newspapers discussing the pros and cons of adding a second hospital to Maui. The proposed second hospital is the Malulani Health & Medical Center, and although the permit for it was denied, the push is on to get the permit reversed. The Maulani Center is a $212 million, 150-bed hospital proposed to be built on 40 acres at the Maui Research & Technology Park in Kihei. For those reading my post and unfamiliar with Maui, Kihei is located in South Maui. Read the story about this controversy in today's Maui News here. Here's my two cents on this matter: since Maui's population is growing and especially in South & West Maui, a SECOND hospital would be a worthy addition, especially if there were any emergencies. And why not add a THIRD medical facility in West Maui while they're at it? Technorati Tags:Maui hospitals, Malulani Health & Medical Center, second hospital on Maui, Ma
The Catholic Hospitals are filing a lawsuit challenging the Constitutionality of New York State closing St. Joseph’s Hospital. I will be rooting for them. The State created the mess the hospitals are in and have no right to arbitrarily decide which hospitals should be closed. It is time to demand an end to socialized medicine.

There has been quite a bit of discussion in the blogoshpere as of late regarding the pending hospital closures. Buffalo Hodgepodge ran the numbers and came to the conclusion that economics dictates that we are over supplied and the closures are necessary.
While I agree that we have an over supply, I do not believe the State should be closing hospitals. The State, as well as the Federal Government is part of the problem. What is needed is a solution that attacks the root cause of our spiraling health care costs. That cause is the proliferation of 3rd party payers, including HMO’s and government benefit programs.
These programs have led to a plethora of unneeded medical tests and treatments. The accountability for the cost of services is removed from the person seeking medical care. The current system benefits the insurance companies and government bureaucracies by creating profit and jobs to process the claims for care. The average person
