Bridgetown (Barbados), April 28 (IANS-CMC) Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene paid tribute to the heroes of the 1996 Cricket World Cup final, saying they had charted the development of cricket in the island nation.
“Sri Lankan cricket has come a long way. Before ‘96 we were like amateurs. The guys who played the game went through a lot of hardships. Even before that they had to work, come to practices at five o’clock,” Jayawardene said ahead of his side’s clash with Australia in the final here Saturday.
“That’s why I said that the ‘96 group that won the World Cup changed the whole concept of Sri Lankan cricket in professionalism and bringing a lot of money into the game so that we could develop. And we are reaping a lot of rewards right now and I think we have moved forward.”

Lord Levy was arrested under suspicion of perverting the course of justice, just like Blair’s so-called ‘gatekeeper’, Ruth Turner. They were each later released on bail.
