If you have anything especially exciting to report then you bring it to the teachers attention on the Monday morning and your child then talks about it to the class. What a system - fantastic. It bridges the gap between his school life and home life in an interesting and simple fashion. Your child also gets an opportunity at public speaking at a very early age! Furthermore, as

Homework Strategies by Karen L. Alaniz
Making It Work Continued from Laying the Foundation for Success: When a child has a routine of doing his homework at the same place and same time every day, it will become routine. Choose a place that is free from distractions such as a desk in his bedroom or the kitchen table. You should also choose a time that is free from distractions. If his favorite television show is on, he'll be distracted. So choose a time prior to a desired activity and use it as a reinforcer. If there is a time when the house is relatively quiet, have that be his homework time. If there is a time when your home is alive with activity, stay away from it. With his folder in front of him, all he has to do now is take out his homework and complete it. And when he is done, he can make an "x" through the due date on his calendar. The calendar on the refrigerator serves as a simple reminder for you, his parent. Teach your child that he is not done with his homework until he has marked it off on

Homework: Laying the Foundation for Success by Karen L. Alaniz
“Let’s go through your backpack.” I said innocently. Zachary tossed the backpack on the sofa and headed for the kitchen. Unzipping the bag, I reached in and pulled out the contents. Papers, library books and construction paper projects fell to the floor. “Zach.” I said. “Come back here and help me with this.” Zach hopped across the floor to me. “Oh yeah.” He said shuffling through a pile of construction paper. “I remember this. I need to do a project about insects.” “A project?” I asked. “What project?” But he was on to another pile. “And this math packet-I can’t remember when it’s due.” He said tossing it aside. Zach has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) so organization isn’t his strong-suit. Most of this was avoidable, if only I’d taken the time to lay the groundwork for a new school year. So with Zach by my side, we went through the papers and right away I could see some key problems. But more importantly

      A Homework Question
Q: With all the hub-bub of the holiday season and the changes in routine, how can I get my child to focus on schoolwork these next two weeks? A: It’s that time of year when we are all distracted from our regular routines by the holidays. There is excitement in the air as we plan our festivities and celebrate our traditions. It is no wonder your energetic, sensitive kid will be drawn toward stimulation and activity and away from dreaded homework. Kindly empathize by letting her know that you understand how hard it is to stay focused this time of year. Give her a reassuring hug reminding her how capable she is of successfully completing her work. Help to keep her school and homework routines as consistent as possible. Acknowledge her hard work with a hug, words of affirmation (you completed your work in record time!) every day. Take her out to a movie, bookstore, activity or event she chooses at the end of the two weeks as a way of acknowledging her success. If she is having

      A Homework Question
Even though the holidays are upon us, our children still must struggle through their homework. In fact, for challenging children, homework during December is even more difficult than other times of the year. So this week, we dedicate our Blog to Homework! Q: My child wants to park himself in the family room and play loud music while he does his homework. I think he should sit quietly at his desk in his room so that he can focus. Who's right? A: It really is not a question of who's right, but instead, how can you set the stage for your child to complete his homework without nightly battles. Look at the bigger picture here. Ask yourself what can I do to create an environment for my child to succeed in. This is your goal. You'll want to consider your child's individual learning style; the environmental preferences that help him to concentrate, and the essential strategies that will set the stage for success. Some children focus better when they are listening to music an

Weekend Recap - Making Money - Doing Homework - Preparing for Christmas
Today was a long and predominately unhappy day, mainly because I am tired and cranky.  As I am still eligable for overtime I am working nearly every day, even if only for a 4 hour shift on a day when I would normally be off.  This week, ending today, I accumulated 48.5 hours and am just drained.  I managed to do all of my American Literature homework.  I cooked on Saturday after work and made huge pots of both Chicken Soup and Chili con Carne.  I brought a bit of each with me to work today and fed my co-workers which was good for my heart as it was met with much gratitude and many compliments. While I was cooking on Saturday GamerDude brought 2 huge bags to a local Toys for Tots drop off.  I tend to buy all year long picking up items when they go on clearance.  One of my favorite deals was a My Little Pony plush that played holiday music, that I was able to pick up for $3 each.  Anyway …. the reaction of the people at the drop off site was to ask my hubby what organizati

do your homework on your credit status
Payday advances were begun several years ago as an answer to the banks and other lending institutions not lending small amounts of money for short periods of time. These companies have hit a special niche in the marketplace that is not easily filled by any other type of lending institution. Although a bank loan may hold a cheaper interest rate, many people, rather because of bad credit or otherwise, cannot secure a small loan at the bank. These days, payday advance companies are easy to find, but you have to make sure that the company you plan to use is a legitimate company. Check the references and see if you can find anyone who has used them before so you can get their views. If you are unsure of a payday loan company in your area, go online and search, there are many out on the web that can approve your loan in very little time. Some will require you faxing documents to them for approval, some are Faxless Payday Loans. Some will have cheaper interest rates than others. Do you

The Dog Ate My Homework, 2007 ed.
© Mrs. Flinger 2007. I came to the coffee shop to get some work done here and here and here. I got comfy with my decaf, sugar free, fat free milk creamer Americano (per this.) and replied to a couple of emails. I opened a new browser tab (thank god for this) and typed in “T-W-I-T...” thinking my browser would bring me to twitter from the history list. It didn’t. I ended up here. And, well, I love him and I subscribe to her and their podcast and go to bed at night praying ours will be that good one day. I saw he was up for a weblog award and I clicked over to vote. Then I realized, “hu, weblog awards? Again? Dude. I NEVER know when these things are coming up. I’m like the weblog award bastard child. I’d LOVE to nominate some people, damnit!” This is true. Luckily, though, I went this category and saw someone I adore in the running (er, rather, lead). Then I saw she was nominated here and voted. And she is nominated here. And then it

Do Your Homework Before Signing Those Car Payments
By: Amy F. GoodmannYour grandmother probably told you first things first. Your teacher or first good boss probably advised you to do your homework thoroughly.Buying a car is much the same way. Do your homework first. Dont go searching for a car loan even if your credit is bad before you sign on the dotted line. A signature at the bank or credit union or life insurance policy is always too quick. It is you, not the lender or car salesman who is going to have the headache and cost of the vehicle or payment schedule not the salesman, bank clerk or life insurance salesperson.First of all is it the car you want not one sluffed on you. Remember it is your purchase stand your ground. If it is a family car dont get pushed into a two door car rather than a more family friendly 4 door. Perhaps even a S.U.V. or a van might be a better choice for a family vehicle. Perhaps even the color is not of your choice or perhaps the color even grates you reminds you of the color of auto that your father alwa

      I Got Homework
I got “homework” from my shrink [Hi, Dr. Fox!] yesterday. Can you believe that? Homework! Not to make a long story too long, but my task is to compose a list of thing that are true for me. A list of things that are constant no matter what anyone says. Let me explain. You see, I have this problem where I take just about everything that anyone says to heart. Here’s a scenario for you: You just got your hair cut and colored. You know that you look H O T. You’ve got a bounce to your step and you’re shaking you ass just a bit more than you normally would. [You sexy thing you] On your way home, you stop into your local liquor grocery store to pick up some rum milk. As you’re paying for your booze milk, you overhear two assholes cashiers talking crap about your rockin’ hair. What’s your response? I figure that most people would shake off the comment and go on with their hot selves. Or, some might confront the brats but still know that they a

      Homework
There’s something perversely fascinating about educational policies that are clearly at odds with the available data. Huge schools are still being built even though we know that students tend to fare better in smaller places that lend themselves to the creation of democratic caring communities. Many children who are failed by the academic status quo are forced to repeat a grade even though research shows that this is just about the worst course of action for them. Homework continues to be assigned – in ever greater quantities – despite the absence of evidence that it’s necessary or even helpful in most cases. The dimensions of that last disparity weren’t clear to me until I began sifting through the research for a new book. To begin with, I discovered that decades of investigation have failed to turn up any evidence that homework is beneficial for students in elementary school. Even if you regard standardized test results as a useful measure, homework (some versus none, o

      The Daily Homework
By: Dr Harry HenshawWe learn much of what we learn initially through repetitious exposure. It is by becoming present to something repeatedly that space is created for us to learn anew. It is by taking that which we are exposed to and bringing it forth into our life, committing it to action, that we begin to change or transform our life in some way. This is especially true with respect to the possibilities made available through transformation. The DAILY HOMEWORK is about the creation of possibilities for transformation. The DAILY HOMEWORK is not a replacement or alternative to a person’s work in recovery. The DAILY HOMEWORK is not a replacement or alternative for the 12 Step Program. What the DAILY HOMEWORK does is support a person’s integrity and commitment with respect to recovery. The principles of the DAILY HOMEWORK are designed to a person to stay present to every day and to practice bringing forth into his life. The promise of the DAILY HOMEWORK is that the space for recovery

      Homework Strategies
The issue of homework comes to a head, as I knew it would. It is tangential to the subject at hand, as I sit in the psychiatrist’s office. We brainstorm the matter. This is both a comforting and disappointing exercise. It is comforting because it reassures me that the psychiatrist is down to earth. He is no fool. He demonstrates a masterful command of the all the hic-cups. He lists each strategy in turn, adjusted for the dynamics of three small children where two are autistic. At the same time, it is a disappointment because I have tried each an every one of them to no avail. The only one I have not technically tried, is the idea to bribe someone to come into my home and help one child with their homework. I have not tried this technique for the pure and simple reason that I cannot find a victim to bribe. He concludes, as I have done, that matters will improve given time.At the same time, my daughter’s teacher offers the carrot of the ‘after school homework club’ for

Homework, Bronchitis and Kids - Oh My!
Last night Princess Nibbles and I went to a “game night” at her school.  She had a great time and, in all honesty, I wasn’t even bored because she is a pleasure to hang out with.  She won all kinds of little prizes and came home happy as a lark.  One of her prizes was a teensy little bag holding 3, even tinier, screwdrivers.  They are real tools but I can’t for the life of me imagine when she would ever have cause to use them.  They were, however, one of her favorite prizes of the night. Mr. Grumpy is out much of today and tomorrow which makes life at home more pleasant than usual, especially as I can take the night off from cooking, order pizza, and have more time to relax when I am not doing homework.  Though tomorrow the plan is to prep dinner before I head out to work so we have a family dinner when I get home.  Of course that will mean calling the people at 4:00 and reminding them to put it in the oven. LOL In other news, GamerDude is having a pain

      Doing our Homework
The predator lurks in the shadows. Waiting. Waiting for the unsuspecting prey to make one wrong move. If he strays into the striking distance, the attack will be swift, with one goal: the destruction of the prey. The devouring of the carcass by the pack. With each kill, the predator becomes stronger and more respected among the pack. You might wonder why a scene from the grasslands of Africa shows up on a political blog. Sadly, this has too often become the scene in American politics. There are organizations set up explicitly to watch for attack opportunities, and seize upon them. The goal? To destroy the opposition, using whatever tactics necessary. It is becoming increasingly imperative to do our own homework with respect to those who are victims of these attacks. (Remember the 200 bodies in the New Orleans Superdome, reported on Oprah?)Media Matters, a so-called "watchdog group," is one of the most recent predators on the scene. Before I defend their most recent prey, I must

Board of Education Plans to do its Homework on Next Kentucky Commissioner
This from Toni Konz at the Courier-Journal: Board of Education chief impressed with commissioner candidates In the second search for a state education commissioner this year, the chairman of the Board of Education said today that the number of applicants is “very encouraging.”So far, approximately 40 people have applied, said Chairman Joe Brothers. ......Rather than appoint a separate screening committee, the full board will review the applications itself and narrow the pool to several semifinalists at its meeting Wednesday.“We are going to hire someone to assist us with the criminal background and initial reference check,” Brothers said. “Once the applicants get through that stage, we will publicly identify about seven semifinalists.”This is the second search conducted for a commissioner this year after Barbara Erwin...resigned three days before she was to start work....after a series of revelations about her background, including inaccurate information on her resume. Homework - more work for parents!
Last year, it was pretty easy to supervise my boys’ homework. All I had to do was read a story to Bear each week and listen to Gigglebug read his book. All that has now changed. Gigglebug has suddenly been given real homework to do (ie learn his 2x table) and he has a test every couple of weeks! This has come as a bit of a shock to me because although it is his homework, he needs my help and attention. Meanwhile, Bear is busy learning how to read and so he needs me to sit and listen to him and help him if he gets stuck. When you throw in after school play dates, a baby and then the feeding/bathing my three, life becomes more than a little hectic! Having said this, I enjoy being able to see how my boys are progressing. This is especially true because they refuse to talk about school point blank so their homework is a small window in to their school lives. If I ever ask them about their day, they can just about manage a “fine”, “ok”, “boring&rd

I never understood how this worked until Sue O'Kieffe very generously demonstrated how easy it is (once you know what you're doing that is). I really couldn't believe I would ever use this layer mask feature before I read her clear, complete and straight-forward post. This is what my first application of Sue's Photoshop tutorial. I used these two images (the original photograph is from wetcanvas), and followed clear Sue's step-by-step. I even used all the tricks she talks about (X and B and [ ] *).All through this exercise, I used different brushes and the airbrush tool, changing the opacity and the pressure of the brushes, until I liked it the final effect. I then flattened all the layers, and applied a few more artistic filters. Easy peasy. Try it and see for yourself.*don't know what I'm
