When we did this we got really excited because this second film is not a 'tag on', it's not 'filler', it's an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative. Until we hear an actual official announcement from New Line / Warner Brothers, anything that Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, or even Ian McKellen says about The Hobbit is unconfirmed. Skeletons found in Palau suggest ‘Hobbits’ were just dwarf humansBy Maggie FoxMarch 11, MSNBCWASHINGTON - Tiny skeletons found in the caves of the Pacific islands of Palau undercut the theory that similar remains discovered earlier in Indonesia might be a unique hominid species, researchers reported Monday. The Palau skeletons, which date to between 900 and 2,800 years ago, appear to have belonged to so-called insular dwarfs — modern humans who grew smaller as a result of living on an island, the researchers said. They said their findings, published in the open-access journal PLoS ONE, show it is possible the same thing happened on the Indonesian island of Flores, where small skeletons dating back 15,000 to 18,000 years ago have intrigued scientists since they were discovered in 2004.S

20 September 2007 (Newsweek) - Newsweek magazine features an interview with Matthew Tocheri, one of the investigators behind the Hobbit wrist study.
‘Tip of the Iceberg’
A new study of a skeleton of a member of a race of three-foot-tall ‘hobbits’ who lived 12,000 years ago in Indonesia shows that they were a species of human—and that the evolutionary path to Homo sapiens has been tortuous indeed.
by Jessica Bennett
It was an astonishing discovery: the skeletal remains of a new human species that lived for eons on a remote island while man colonized the rest of the planet. Back when it was first discovered in 2003, on the tiny Indonesian island of Flores, the three-foot-tall adult female skeleton was dubbed “the hobbit,” because she—and the 11 other skeletal remains that were found like her—bore more of a resemblance to the Tolkien fantasy characters than to modern humans. The hobbit’s discovery presented evidence that as recently as 12,000 years
The scientists, extortion gives to them the identity of the famous fossil of “hobbit”, found a new index in the wrist. Since the discovery of the bones in Indonesia in 2003, the researchers disputed the surplus if the lucky find were an ancient human ancestor or simply a modern human pain of a genetic disorder. Now, a study of the bones in the left wrist of the creature lends the weight to the human theory of ancestor, according to a report/ratio in the question of Friday of the Science of newspaper. The bones of wrist of foot-large creature 3, technically known under the name of floresiensis of Homo, are basically indistinguishable from a monkey African or early hominin-like the wrist and nothing just like that seen in the human modern ones and Neanderthals, according to the team of research undertaken by Matthew W. Tocheri of the national museum Smithsonien of the natural history. That indicates that it is a hominin early and not human modern with a physical disorder, they dispute.
21 September 2007 (ABC News in Science) - Here’s a news piece about the wrist study which sums up the news quite nicely in layman terms. There’s also a dissenting opinion about the study that’s also food for thought.

The hobbit had wrists more like those of non-human apes than those of modern humans, according to researchers who say their findings are more evidence that Homo floresiensis is a new species.

20 September 2007 (Smithsonian Institution) - A new study on the wrist bones recovered from the homo floresiensis assembly adds extra weight to our Hobbit from Flores being an entirely new species rather than a sick, deformed human. There are a few other stories popping up today so stay tuned for more insights! It’s a really busy day at work, so hopefully I can post them all up by the end of the day.

New Research Sheds Light on “Hobbit” Smithsonian-led Study Published in Science
An international team of researchers led by the Smithsonian Institution has completed a new study on Homo floresiensis, commonly referred to as the “hobbit,” a 3-foot-tall, 18,000-year-old hominin skeleton, discovered four years ago on the Indonesian island of Flores. This study offers one of the most striking confirmations of the original interpretation of the hobbit as an island remnant of one of the oldest human migrati
Scientists, wringing their hands over the identity of the famed "hobbit" fossil, have found a new clue in the wrist. Since the discovery of the bones in Indonesia in 2003, researchers have wrangled over whether the find was an ancient human ancestor or simply a modern human suffering from a genetic disorder. Now, a study of the bones in the creature's left wrist lends weight to the human ancestor theory, according to a report in Friday's issue of the journal Science. The wrist bones of the 3-foot-tall creature, technically known as Homo floresiensis, are basically indistinguishable from an African ape or early hominin-like wrist and nothing at all like that seen in modern humans and Neanderthals, according to the research team led by Matthew W. SCIENTISTS have rained on the parade of the Australian-led team that found the remains of "hobbit" hominids in an Indonesian cave in 2003. The team argued the skeletons on the island of Flores belonged to a race separate from Homo sapiens, but also coming from Homo erectus, probable ancestor of modern man. That would mean H. sapiens, around for at least 150,000 years, would have shared Earth with rival humans far more recently than thought. But in a study in the journal Biology Letters, zoologists at Imperial College London believe hobbits may have achieved their size by evolutionary pressure. Because food on a small island is limited, larger species -- which face fierce competition for a small amount of food -- become smaller, as those that eat less have an advantage.
Sam Raimi has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that he is interested in directing The Hobbit, but only if Peter Jackson, director of Lord of the Rings agrees.
Raimi said: “Peter Jackson might be the best filmmaker on the planet right now. But, um, I don’t know what’s going to happen next for me right now. First and foremost, those are Peter Jackson and Bob Shaye’s, head of New Line Cinema films. If Peter didn’t want to do it, and Bob wanted me to do it, and they were both OK with me picking up the reins that would be great. I love the book. It’s maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others.”

Uwe Boll, acclaimed director of several classic video game adaptations, will be going on a trip to Middle Earth soon. New Line cinema revealed today that the director has been working on the project for the past month, and that a new script for the film is in the works, with filming to begin on sound stages in Germany sometime in late 2007.
Appointing Boll as director on the new Hobbit movie marks the end of a search that began back in November of 2006 when Peter Jackson revealed to shocked Lord of the Rings fans that New Line had dropped him from the project. New Line wanted a director who would be able to generate a lot of Internet buzz, one of the key factors in the success of the original trilogy, and executives agree that when it comes to ‘net buzz, Boll is best.

Who - or what - is Homo floresiensis? (Wiki) The tiny hominid bones, which a joint Australian-Indonesian team unearthed in 2003 on the Indonesian island of Flores, have quickly become as celebrated (and derided) as any find in the tempestuous history of human paleontology. The mystery that shrouds these ancient skeletons, nicknamed hobbits after the diminutive characters in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels, seems to deepen with every study published. Two main camps have emerged, each certain they can settle the question. But many other paleoanthropologists confess they still have no idea.
H. floresiensis Discovered
The discovery team declared their find a new human species, H. floresiensis, based primarily on a single near-complete skeleton of one very small individual with a very small brain, known as
