Transferring from its limited run at the Roundabout Theatre Company earlier this spring, "39 Steps" has transferred to an open-ended commercial run.
The movie has been remade several times, including by Hitchcock himself in 1959's "North by Northwest." This adaptation by Patrick Barlow takes on the 1935 classic film with a cast

I have a great interest in the history of the legal system in England and how it developed and Tales from the Hanging Court, which looks at crime and punishment in the eighteenth century as illustrated by the Old Bailey Proceedings, covers one of the most interesting times. This century is the one where formalities were introduced, such as the presence of counsel for the defence and prosecution or the introduction of the Bow Street Runners as the beginnings of a formal police force. At the start of the century a cry of 'Stop Thief!' or 'Murder!' meant that every law-abiding citizen in the area was honour bound to drop what they were doing and run to help. In an age where we often hear of horrific crimes happening while passers-by do not dare interfere there is a charm to this, but it was als

Few movie stars wear the updo as well as Tippi Hedren and a few other celebrities from the early 60s. Those were the days when people dressed up to go to the laundry. A trip to the grocery store was deserving of fresh lipstick and updo hairstyles. The French Twist hairstyle that she had when she starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds movie should be studied carefully by hairstylists of today who need French twist instructions. All artists should practice and perfect this style because it is a classic and there will always be a special occasion that calls for it. Wherever there is a red carpet, there will be French Twists and updos. Celebrity hairstyles may be tweaked and updated, but the basics are the same. I'm not fond of the "wings" that stylists of the 50s and 60s put on each s

After watching a long western The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, it was a wonderful way to train my ears to listen to the sounds from English singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock. What i listened wasnt my favorite Hitchcock record "I Often Dream of Trains", it was the new...

Is this the rope by which Hitchcock hangs himself? For me, yes, well - at least in part. The obsession with style and technique here really overrides the plots focus and any sense of realism. The rope may be awaiting the film's protagonists, it may be the ingredient that gave them away, but in trying for so long to tie the long tracking shots together Hitch' comes desperately unstuck for this particular viewer. The set-up is simple: 2 impossibly arrogant bourgois students murder a classmate purely to see if they can get away with "the perfect murder". Murder, they proffer, is not just a crime but an art form reserved for the higher classes of individual to be perpetrated on the weak lower echelons of society. After the murder the 2 students hold a party attended by the deceased's girlfriend
Dear Useless Men,If you wrote an Alfred Hitchcock kind of story how would it go?A Curious BirdDear A Curious Bird, It would be about a man. But not just any man. This would be a man who used to be a woman...who used to be a man. No, not in that way, you sicko. I'm talking past lives here. In his last life he was a British spy, the first woman agent in MI6, sent to seduce members of the upper echelons of the Nazi party and assassinate Hitler. But she's conflicted: her love for her country suddenly called in to question when she falls for a dashing member of Hitler's inner circle who, it turns out, is really a counter-espionage agent ordered to seduce her! In his past past life, he's a tenacious up-and-coming oil baron who pulled himself up from his own bootstraps in the mean streets of Boston and is now taking his personal rough-and-tumble, no-holds-barred approach to commerce in the wild west. The competition? A posh English aristocrat named P. Radley with a quick wit, a ke
