Singapore Travel Tip: 3 Must-see Historical Buildings
Some historical buildings in Singapore have featured as settings in classic novels and local folklore. If you are visiting Singapore, remember to check out these 3: the Raffles Hotel, Thian Hock Keng Temple and Sri Mariamman Temple. Raffles Hotel, Singapore: This is the hotel that has enchanted writers such as Noel Coward, Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham, all of whom have written about it. Even as early as 1910, the Raffles Hotel was a stopover for filthily rich visitors on round-the-world cruises. Such is its attraction that even a real tiger entered it in 1902. But without an invitation, it was eventually shot dead by a school teacher, who turned up at the scene curiously wearing pyjamas and carrying a hangover. This is also a hotel not to be trifled with. Who else is able to get th

Brunhes divides the historical provinces into six groups
Brunhes divides the historical provinces into six groups, according to their geographical location and the character of their historical development. A group in the centre of the Seine basin, the middle Loire, and the basin of the Garonne, served as nuclei of crystallization for distinct provinces. These are the Île de France; Guyenne and Gascony; Lyonnais, Forez, Beaujolais; Touraine, Maine, and Anjou; Alsace. A second group lies on routeways astride the great lowlands -- Poitou, Champagne, Picardy and Artois, Burgundy (with Nivernais) and Languedoc -- each of which had a wide field of influence, intellectual, commercial and political.A third group contains what were formerly important centres but are now of secondary importance. All of them are situated in the centre of France, between

Historical Politics and Historical “Masterpieces” in Macedonia
In 1995, the social anthropologist from the US, Kate S. Brown, tried to examine this success with the help of the “national imagination” in the now independent Macedonia, and, toward this aim, formulated the following leading question:"In the 1990s, Macedonians speak a language codified in 1946, spoken by less than two million people, and with a very slender literature. They are members of an Orthodox Church whose authority was established by a socialist political regime in 1968. They are heirs to a 1903 revolution that until the 1940s was described by almost all sources as being Bulgarian. They are descendants from people who were called, and at times called themselves, Serbs or Bulgarians. They have no modern history of independent statehood; the last period that they can claim as bo

Does communism's record deserve as unequivocal a condemnation as that of Nazism? And should communism's modern-day adherents and apologists be rejected as firmly by Europe's political mainstream as those of Nazism? The debate over the historical record of communism simmers on in the European Union. Forced onto the bloc's agenda by its new ex-communist member states, the issue was most recently broached at a European Parliament debate in Strasbourg on April 21. Give kids a historical connection
I've been cleaning off my desk today. At the bottom of a stack of papers, was an article I saved from USA Today on February 26 entitled, "Teens losing touch with historical references."  The gist of it is, today's teenagers have lost touch with American History, and can't identify most major events or the impact on our life today. It boils down to the sad fact that History is not taught in most schools as a primary subject. The article was accompanied by a quiz, Are you smarter than a 17-year-old?  Sadly, my kids failed it, too.We take some pride in reconnecting our kids with historical facts through hands-on or living history events. Historical, nonmechanical memory technologies
Perhaps the most ingenious technique was that of the delay line. A delay line is any kind of device which delays the propagation of a pulse or wave signal. If you've ever heard a sound echo back and forth through a canyon or cave, you've experienced an audio delay line: the noise wave travels at the speed of sound, bouncing off of walls and reversing direction of travel. The delay line "stores" data on a very temporary basis if the signal is not strengthened periodically, but the very fact that it stores data at all is a phenomenon exploitable for memory technology. Early computer delay lines used long tubes filled with liquid mercury, which was used as the physical medium through which sound waves traveled along the length of the tube. An electrical/sound transducer was mounted at each

Ever since the first players sunk the first hoops back over a century ago, basketball has been one of America's number one sports, and pro basketball players have been making sports history. American pro basketball history can be traced to a game played in 1896 at the YMCA in Trenton, New Jersey. This game was played as the result of a fallout dispute between members of the YMCA team and a YMCA official. The disillusioned players formed their own professional team and began to play for money. Two years later, a group of New Jersey newspaper sports editors founded the National Basketball League (NBL). The stars of this first pro league were Barney Sedran and Ed Wachter. As the league progressed into the twentieth century, the first two successful professional teams were the Buffalo Germans

Why it does not make sense to make historical movies in India
We have seen it in Asoka. We have seen it in Rising-Mangal Pandey. We saw it happening all over again in Jodhaa Akbar. No doubt, Jodhaa Akbar was a well made movie, albeit a long length. But then historically themed movies never do the best business in India, barring Mughal-e-Azam of yesteryears. Historical movies in India are always embroiled in some sort of controversy. It has been always said that negative publicity is good publicity but it ain’t that good when people pull the movie down from the theatres and do not allow it to release under any cost. The mindset with historical movies is that youngsters are plain bored with historical stories and the older members of the populace always find something odd and conflicting in the story. While the younger generation hardly gives a da

Although many laissez-faire proponents continue to argue against any government intervention into the housing & mortgage crises in favor of Adam Smith's "invisible hand" letting free markets create their own solutions, some historians are pointing to the Great Depression, when moratoriums on foreclosures sometimes lasted many years. From a New York Times story:The Bush administration recently announced a plan to delay foreclosures for some troubled homeowners for 30 days. The role of astrology as an important motivation for astronomical research diminished as the works of Galileo and others solved the problems in celestial mechanics that were of interest to astrologers, and as belief in astrological influences or correlations became extinct among astronomers. The needs of modern navigation and physics became more important motivators for astronomical research.Astrology and astronomy began to take divergent paths during the rise of the rational and the scientific method in the Western World. Disposable Personal Income Shows Disturbing Historical Trend
How do you measure personal wealth? As a standardized way to measure the wealth of individuals as part of a nation, it is the average disposable personal income. Disposable personal income, is the total after-tax income received by persons, or the income available to persons for spending or saving. By using this, it is easy to say if the population of a country is richer or poorer overall. Disposable personal income, however, does not measure how that wealth is distributed (if I ate two loaves of bread and you ate none, it will still show that we each ate one loaf), but that is not the subject of this post. thebankruptcynewsdotcom The US has been in a worrisome trend for the past 30 years. Although disposable personal income has been growing (we are “richer” than our parents), the percentage at which disposable personal income grows year by year is smaller and smaller. In the first place there has been considerable volcanic activity. Pompei and Herculaneum were completely destroyed by Vesuvius in A.D. 79; the former by an ash fall and the latter by a mud flow up to 20 metres thick, which was much harder than the pumice ash. Four volcanoes are still active. Associated in some cases with volcanic activity but generally with other movements in the earth's crust have been numerous earthquakes of varying degrees of intensity. Virtually every part of Italy is susceptible to tremors but very serious earthquakes are more limited in occurrence. Zecco Adds Historical Performance and Tax Analysis
Zecco, the discount online broker, has recently added even more features to the fold. After limiting free trades to those with balances over $2,500 a few months ago, Zecco has been adding features like mad. The first feature they added was ZeccoShare, an online community to share stock picks and advice. Since I’m already active over at The Updown, this didn’t interest me too much (although it has supposedly gotten good reviews from the press) I went into my Zecco account this morning to check out the new features. It appears that the reporting interface is powered by GainsKeeper software which is pretty high powered stuff. They appear to cater to investors who need to keep track of complicated cost basis and tax implications of their portfolios. This means that the GainsKeeper implementation in Zecco is quite cool, with adjustable periods of return, which stocks to sell to save on taxes. I can apparently save $64 from my tragic performance so far this year. This summer I b

Should Bruton Smith - SMI consider moving Lowe’s Motor Speedway to the historical North Wilkesboro Speedway?
In my piece last week entitled “Bruton Smith – SMI: The tale of New Hampshire International Speedway and North Wilkesboro Speedway.”, I started to touch on this very topic of just what should Bruton smith and SMI do with the newly purchased historic North Wilkesboro Speedway land? Newly purchased Brian? With the purchase of the New Hampshire International Speedway now renamed New Hampshire Motor Speedway for 340 Million dollars, in that transaction, SMI also purchased Bahre’s 50% of North Wilkesboro Speedway and now that he owns the entire lot lock stock and barrel, what should he do with it?By now, NASCAR fans have read about Smith – SMI’s problems with Concord, NC about Smith wanting to build a drag strip on the site of his Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord and the city originally said “NO”. Of course right after that, Smith said he might consider moving the Lowe’s Motor Speedway from Concord to Charlotte just 20 miles or so miles away. Keep in mind that Lowe’s M

      Phimai Historical Park: Korat
Phimai Historical Park lies far off the beaten tourist track so that makes for an ideal day of absorbing the fascinating architecture of the Khmer. Built as an important regional center of the Khmer, Phimai faces south toward Angkor. The white sandstone sanctuary was built during the 16th Buddhist century and additions were made at the the beginning of the following century during the reign of King Jayavoraman VII. The largest stone sanctuary in Thailand measures 565 by 1,030 meters and is protected by a moat and flanked by the Moun and Chackarat rivers. The central courtyard has 3 towers, or Prangs. The main tower is decorated with lintels and bas reliefs showing scenes or episodes from Ramayana; the epic battle between Rama and Ravana, a demon with many heads and arms who had stolen Rama's wife. The secondary towers are made of laterite and red sandstone. One has the sculpture of a seated King Jayavarman VII. For a remarkable viewing of a computer reconstructi

      Earliest Historical Records.
The Indonesian archipelago stretches for more than 3,000 miles east to west and is the largest island complex in the world. The sea has inevitably influenced Indonesian history. Not surprisingly, the boat became a pervasive metaphor in literary and oral tradition and in the arts in Indonesia. Monsoon winds, blowing north and south of the equator, have facilitated communication within the archipelago and with the rest of maritime Asia; the warm rainfall has nourished rich vegetation. In early times the timber and spices of Java and the eastern islands were known afar, as were also the resins from the exceptionally wet equatorial jungle in the western islands of Sumatra and Borneo. 'Small Holding' by Greg (Incest Rural Historical) (M/M/M oral, anal, spank)
I was sitting up in the big double-bed reading the 'The Farmer's Weekly'."Don't hog all the space", said my older brother Bert. He joined me under the bed clothes and then arranged my skinny body to his satisfaction. I felt his massive organ slide between the cheeks of my arse, until it pressed against my brown hole. I bit my lip while his fleshy monster penetrated the hot, tight tunnel. When it reached my love-nut I relaxed and he pushed on, cramming my rectum with his manmeat. We were both highly respected members of our small community. Bert was 26, muscular and fit while at 18, I was the runt of the litter. At the end of the war our parents had been killed in a tragic accident so Bert was all the family I had.The bedsprings squeaked as they did most nights. Petroleum jelly might have helped the penetration and made his hard thrustings a bit more bearable. Bert never thought to use it.I was ideal for the role of 'cunny-boy', as Bert called me, because my penis was useless.Bert

The Linn County Historical Museum was established in Brownsville Oregon in 1962 by the Linn County Historical Society in cooperation with the City of Brownsville. Many county residents contributed time, talent, funds and artifacts to stock the new museum.  Over the years the collection grew and expanded into an adjacent building to the east.  Many visitors were charmed by the "grandmother's attic" feeling of the museum, with its scenes of domestic life and commerce, cases, shelves, nooks and crannies overflowing with a jumble of historical items. The new facility in the old relocated Brownsville Depot and railroad cars was dedicated on June 16, 1984. There is a mini-theatre, which occupies one of the box cars, and includes 30 seats from the old Linn Theatre in Brownsville.  Historical and vintage video programs are shown by request. To enjoy the essence of early Linn County life, and view the replicas of a general store, bank, barber shop and milliners s

Historical Home Prices for Loudoun County - Jan 2005-Oct 2007
We are putting together some charts for the Dulles Area Association of Realtors and we thought we would share some of them with our readers.  Here is an example of a chart showing three different prices for Loudoun County Home Sales.  It is a monthly chart and it compares the Average List Price of homes that went under contract during a calendar month with the Average Sales Price of the same homes.  The difference between the blue line and the red line illustrates the amount a buyer was able to negotiate off the list price of the average home.  In early 2005, you can see there was little if any difference between the two prices.  That started to change in the second half of 2005 and has slowly increased.  In just the last two months the percentage has gone from 97% to 95.8%.  The Median List Price is the midpoint of the list prices for home sales during a calendar month.  Exactly half of the homes that sold during that month had a list pric

      Visit Charming Historical Springfield, Illinois

However, the gentle sereneness of Springfield are in keeping with its history, for this is Lincoln's town. He was part of the group of people responsible for making Springfield the state capital, and this is his final resting place.Apart from the limestone built capitol building from where Abraham Lincoln gave his "House Divided" speech, there's also a Lincoln Home Visitors Center which shows a short movie on the Springfield that Lincoln loved, and where you can obtain free tickets to take a walk around the restored Lincoln home on 8th and Jackson Street. As a visual lesson in how people lived "back then" the home is an interesting place to visit. For those who don't think that it's morbid, a

      Historical Overview of Sunglasses
By: Elmo Kandel Sunglasses can be found around every corner you turn today. You can find them in grocery stores for a few dollars or in specialty stores for a few hundred dollars. Sunglasses come in so many different shapes, designs and colors that there is a pair out there for everyone. But the market for sunglasses has not always been this way. Sunglasses have been in use for centuries and have evolved over time into what they are today. They were not always the fashion icon they are today. Similarly, they were not always used for the same reason they are today either.Surprisingly, the first form of what we have as sunglasses today were not originally developed to shield eyes from the sun or help poor vision. In Ancient China, sunglasses were developed out of smoky panes of quartz glass. Judges wore these prehistoric ray bans as a way of keeping their expressions to themselves. Little did they know that poker players centuries later would adopt this same principle use of the eyewear.

Opening Sequence for ‘The Kingdom’ Lends Historical Insight
From Yahoo: The Kingdom starts with a montage sweeping through the dustry sands of Saudi Arabia, briefly detailing the kingdom, the US, and its long history with oil, from 1932 to 2001. While that may sound boring, or even yawn-worthy, the music and editing on this sequence breeds more anticipation than some action movies. Historical video and audio clips are laid out on a clear timeline, and while no brief mention of an event can do it justice, it’s a quick and excellent short primer for the movie. There’s nothing quite as distracting as trying to follow along with everything in a film, especially a documentary, when you don’t know the background. It’s definitely done it’s job. I was interested before the clip, and after seeing the opening, it’s on my short list. Playing similarly to a trailer, it’s educational and interesting, and it’s got so much information packed into a few minutes that it won’t hurt to see it again when you

A Historical Journey - The Last Spike
During my time here in the Canadian Rockies, I have spoken to hundreds of people visiting this incredible area and many of them arrived in Banff from the West Coast by train and motorcoach. As locals, I think we all hope to one day have the chance to experience it for ourselves.Recently I got that chance, travelling from Banff to Vancouver and back. During our trip, we stopped at the last spike and it made me realize that without it, none of this would have been possible. For those that don't know the history, the last spike was driven into the last rail on November 7, 1885. Work started in the East and the West. The rails were to link up in the middle. It was on this day that the two rails finally reached each other. With this last spike, a coast-to-coast Canadian railway was born. The return trip from Vancouver really was the highlight of the trip. On the way there we did learn a lot about the area that we didn't know. Our driver really was a fountain of information, but riding the

ScorecardChris Gayle's world record century - the highest score in the history of the Twenty20 game, surpassing Ricky Ponting's 98 - turned out to be a pyrrhic effort as a dazzling 90 from Herschelle Gibbs, helped by some wretched bowling and fielding, piloted South Africa home with 14 balls remaining, the highest score chased down in 20 internationals. West Indies dropped three catches and bowled a staggering 23 wides in a slipshod display epitomised by Dwayne Smith's two overs for 37 runs. South Africa's refusal to succumb was best illustrated by the courage of their captain, Graeme Smith. After being struck a sickening blow on the right wrist off the first ball of a superb opening over from Daren Powell, Smith carried on with typical bullishness, muscling the ball over the leg side and through

Wikipedia - Historical Revisionism, Negationism and Dystopian Fiction
Wikipedia reminds me ever so much of Winston Smith's job in 1984 by George Orwell (or Eric Blair), as I recall Winston constantly rewrites the past to suit the needs of the present. Surprisingly however (or not) Wikipedia's entry for 'Historical Revisionism (Negationism)' doesn't include any references to itself. The chap in 'Brazil', the 1985 film by Terry Gilliam, has the same, or very similar, job to Winston, as I further recall. My favourite 'traditional' dystopian story is Malcolm Bradbury's 'Fahrenheit 451', although I enjoyed Alan Moore's 'V for Vendetta' when it came out in 18 years ago, when I was 18, in 1988. However I suspect that I'll enjoy Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World', when I eventually get around to reading it (although I didn't get on with his 'The Doors of Perception (1954)' which I read half-heartedly at 14). I appear to have read, and own, an un

Alternative Press Magazine was founded in 1985 by Mike Shea (who is the current president). The first issue was just a photocopied fanzine that was distributed at concerts in Cleveland beginning in June of 1985 due to the fact that Mike Shea could no longer stand the music being played on radio stations and believed that bands playing underground music should be given more media coverage all in the same spot, he said. With the growth of alternative and punk music in the early 1990s, circulation began to increase and bands such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails were featured on their covers before e
