This fall I don't plan on missing any of the hit television premieres or pilots. No more standing around the water cooler listening to everyone tell me how great a new show was that I didn't watch or didn't record.
This year I've hired a television guru. Actually I should say enlisted the help of instead of hired because my guru doesn't actually cost me a dime. His name is TiVo and he's quite goo

The manager hired a new secretary. She was young, sweet and polite. One day while taking dictation, she noticed his fly was open. While leaving the room, she courteously said, "Oh, sir, did you know that your barracks door is open?"He did not understand her remark, but later on he happened to look down and saw that his zipper was open. He decided to have some fun with his new employee.Calling her

WOW, Ebay really has messed up things lately haven't they? I'm talking about the new feedback rules, where only the buyer can leave negative feedback and sellers are only allowed to give Positive feedback.
This has affected so many sellers, actually all sellers, they are having to deal with more buyers being unfair, don't get me wrong, there is lots of nice buyers, but some just down right

One of the tools you are going to need to operate your coffee shop are good employees. You don't want to just hire the first people that walk through the door. Hiring friends and family can create issues outside of the business so many people choose to steer clear of that as well. It is very important that you hire the best employees that will be friendly, offer quality service to customers, show up when they should, and be open to new ideas. Your customers will suffer if you don't have enough employees or if they aren't doing their job correctly. Most customers have a specific level of expectations when they enter a place of business. If they don't think their needs have been met, they are going to think really hard before they come back in. Even if you offer the best tasting coffee in to

Jerry Bruckheimer's reboot of The Lone Ranger may have just received its golden ticket - screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. We've covered this project before, back in May of last year, but since then its been all quiet on the western front. Confirmed officially today is that Elliott and Rossio are in final negotiations to write the script for the live-action big-screen adaptation of the classic 1930s radio show. Besides writing Shrek, The Mark of Zorro, and Godzilla (two of which were also reboots) together, Elliott and Rossio were the duo that brought us all three of the Pirates of the Caribbean adventures. But are they capable of repeating that success? The Lone Ranger is essentially a very risky and troubled project. In a day and age where westerns continue to flop no mat

Miley Cyrus is getting serious about working out after fighting off internet rumors she was pregnant at 14. The actress/singer responded to the rumors, saying they were not only false but very hurtful. So she hired Harley Pasternak (Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson’s trainer and author of “The 5 Factor Diet“) to help her get in shape, according to In Touch Weekly magazine.
A pal tells the publication, “She just wants to look great. She’s very motivated.” [Source]
I think Miley is really cute, and it seems just wrong that people said that she was pregnant! I mean, she’s only 14, and she was probably looking bloated at some event, so they all started speculating! Give her a break!
A few more pictures of her at the 2007 Spirit of Life Awards after the jump.
During the House Oversight Committee hearing on October 2nd (watch it on C-SPAN) the founder of Blackwater, Erik Prince, discussed a shooting that took place in December 2006. It was Christmas Eve and a Blackwater mercenary soldier (let's be honest -that's what he is) got hammered. In his drunken stupor, Andrew Moonan ended up shooting and killing a body guard of the Iraqi Vice President. During the testimony, Erik Prince told the committee that the murdering employee was fired, but he was not prosecuted by either the Iraqi or United States government, although the Justice Department was investigating the incident.Turns out the State Department (who has a contract with Blackwater) didn't inform the Department of Defense that this guy was a murderer. A little over two months later, in February 2007, another private military firm whose contract is with the Department of Defense hired the ex-Blackwater killer and sent him back overseas until August 2007. During this time, in April of 2

No one writes a better column than Paul Krugman. He is one of the few who sees the details, the devil in the details and the consequences of the details.
The first few paragraphs of this column, Hired Gun Fetish, about mercenaries and Blackwater in particular, is exemplary:
Sometimes it seems that the only way to make sense of the Bush administration is to imagine that it’s a vast experiment concocted by mad political scientists who want to see what happens if a nation systematically ignores everything we’ve learned over the past few centuries about how to make a modern government work.
Thus, the administration has abandoned the principle of a professional, nonpolitical civil service, stuffing agencies from FEMA to the Justice Department with unqualified cronies. Tax farming — giving individuals the right to collect taxes, in return for a share of the take — went out with the French Revolution; now the tax farmers are back.
And so are mercenaries, whom Machiavelli describe

The guy is fuming and says to the maid, ''Listen, would you like to make $50,000?'' The maid says, ''What will I have to do?''The man tells her, ''I want you to get my gun from the desk, and shoot the witch and the jerk she's with.'' The maid puts the phone down; the man hears footsteps and then two gun shots. The maid comes back to the phone, ''What do I do with the bodies?'' The man says, ''Throw them in the swimming pool.'' Puzzled, the maid answers, ''But you don't have a pool.'' A long pause and the man says, ''Is this 567-5309?''

The first names on the Washington D.C. madame's list are slowly leaking to the press.Senator David Vitter (R-Louisiana) is among those who are tied into the DC madame's escort service. (Let's be real, she ran a prostitution ring.)Vitter apologized, in Jim Bakker form, for his "mistakes;""This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Vitter said in the statement. "Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there — with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way."Personally, I could care less if Vitter played around with hookers outside his marriage or not. I only write about it because he's one of those "family values" Republicans who apparently acted like a hypocrite this whole time.Anyway, I wonder if this will affect him
by Derek AdamsIt was going to be my last summer on the farm. I'd graduated from high school and managed a scholarship at the state university about two hundred miles from the small farming community where I lived with my folks. I was looking forward to going away to college, but I also knew I'd miss the rhythms and cycles of the farm labor I'd done since I was a kid.I had acted as my Dad's hired hand since I was twelve years old. Now, with me going away in the fall, there was no way the folks could handle the place by themselves, so my Dad was busy interviewing men to find a replacement for me.It wasn't an easy process. One guy came over to the house reeking of booze. Another was over sixty-five, looking for some light chores to supplement his retirement. Most of the others were college-age guys like myself, looking for summer work. Dad was getting pretty discouraged by the time that Jack Pomerantz finally came along.Jack had owned a farm in Iowa until his loans had been ca

The first shoot of the day was an editorial submission to Supermodels Unlimited Magazine, a magazine that I contribute to on a pretty regular basis. This from Alexander Russo at This Week in Education:Take a look at this overview of big-time DC lobbyists from Washingtonian and you'll not only see a lot of names that should be familiar to you (if you're in DC) -- Podesta, Boggs, Podesta, Weber -- but also learn a lot about how it all works -- the dark art of the earmark (a favorite of universities needing new buildings), the rivalry between private lobbying firms and law firms with lobbying practices, and the big money that's involved to get things done. Find a client with an unmet need.Grind out an earmark or a change in the law. Mind it, to make sure it stays in there through committee, the floor, and the conference report.Education insiders and Hill staff may have better day to day access know more about the issues in a general sense but they're often outmatched when it comes to specific interests, deep political knowledge, and legislative ins and outs. According to Techcrunch, Google is now in talks to acquire SimplyHired.com, a job listing website that works by searching across many websites such as Craigslist and Wetfeet.com and aggregating all the results. Venturebeat also has a first-hand account of the breaking news.
According to these articles, SimplyHired recently raised $13.5M for a $40M post investment valuation from NewsCorp. I find this amazing because it seems the barriers to entry for an aggregating website are so low…the business model to me seems too simple. What if in a year a new security device comes out capable of blocking these aggregating/scraping sites from accessing their content?
Are sites like Craigslist.com really okay with their content being exploited on other sites? True, SimplyHired does ultimately send the person back to Craigslist.com but still, when your entire business model relies on someone else’s content it seems like a recipe for disaster…at least to me.

In the course of 12 hours this weekend I made two new commitments. First, I was asked to join a worship team at my church. I've been on one almost my whole life, taking a break in the past years to finish my Master's degree and have a baby. I'm excited to be back. Second, I just became a Master Course Writer for Judson College, where I have been teaching courses as an Adjunct professor. I had a few things to say (when don't I?) on the faculty evaluation about the text that went with the first class I taught. Next thing I know, I've been hired to re-write the class. How fun is that? I'm feeling a bit daunted. And excited. And daunted.
Blogging about Fashion PR has definitely opened up new job opportunities for me, although this was not my primary goal since starting PR Couture. A few months ago, I talked about the importance, and marketability of social media skills for entry-level PR practitioners. Today, Wall Street Journal Online published an article on how having a blog might help you get a job, noting that, “recruiters say they check candidates’ blogs about noncareer-related topics for evidence of writing skills and clues to how well rounded they are.”
While getting praised and headhunted because of your fabulous online presence can end up a pretty sweet deal, let us not forget that blogging can get you fired. However, for certain beauty and fashion editors, a blog-based firing only spurred them on to further career glories.
These days, google and myspace are being used for more than just stalking old boyfriends. According to Debbie Weil, a corporate blogging consultant and the author of The C
BOSTON (AP) — The owner and three managers of a New Bedford leather manufacturer that’s won more than $91 million in U.S. military contracts were arrested Tuesday for allegedly hiring illegal immigrants.
The company, Michael Bianco Inc., hired illegal aliens as it tried to meet deadlines to supply backpacks and other products to the military, federal officials said in a court filing. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers raided the company Tuesday morning.
In an affidavit, investigators claimed that owner Francesco Insolia, plant manager Dilia Costa, payroll manager Ana Figueroa and office manager Gloria Melo allowed an undercover officer who told them she was an illegal immigrant to continue working at the plant, and Figueroa advised her how to obtain a fake Social Security card.
Authorities said the informant tipped them off.
“The (informant) stated that Insolia and other MBI employees working on his behalf have knowingly and actively been hiring illegal alie
“At least two” board members from the American Conservative Union threatened to quit if the former House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay (R-Texas), was hired as a lobbyist.
In a Christmas Eve column for the Chicago Sun-Times, conservative columnist Robert Novak claims he has heard of potential resignations of board members at the American Conservative Union, should former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) be hired as a lobbyist for the organization.
DeLay told the The New York Times just last week that he would be announcing some new “career moves” soon, but said that the “one career that he was not considering” would be lobbying.
Whatever “career” DeLay decides to take up, he must hope it is more successful than “his” blog.
As Raw Story noted, DeLay’s site enjoyed a spike in traffic from liberal sites and has since died off.
It would be extremely fun to work as a blogger. Not only because you'll get to earn money blogging or work from home but mostly because blogging is fun! Putting words and images together in short bursts of opinion-bites allows me to share ideas or thoughts that I would have otherwise kept in my head. How then does one get employed as a blogger? Logically speaking, getting a lucrative job as a professional blogger involves a relatively simple two step process..Step One: You have to make people want you. In other words, you'll need to make yourself valuable by being functionally attractive as a blogger that benefits the potential employer.Step Two: You need to connect with opportunities. This could mean simply passively searching for blogging jobs or actively networking and applying for unadvertised or non-existent positions.Step One: Establishing a Foundation1. Create a Blog This is a no-brainer. If you haven't already got one, you shouldn't really be looking for a job as

Cameron has weapons that he can use now to make a pretty potent offense but questions do remain. Will Daunte Culpepper get healthy and return to form?
