PSE&G Double Talks on Highlands -- Surprise
In a letter to the NJ DEP, The NJ Highlands Coalition has "strongly objected" to PSE&G's Highlands power line plan, according to NJ Herald, in what sounds like an even stronger opposition than the Coalition's 11/18/08 press release which "asks the DEP to carefully review the power line expansion plan." What really raises my ire is that PSE&G is telling residents attending its "information

IMAGES of the mountain mouse-deer fleeing a brown mongoose used with permission from Gehan de Silva WijeyeratneOne of Sri Lanka's least known mammals and maybe an undescribed species - the mountain mouse-deer has been possibly photographed for the first time under dramatic circumstances. The opportunity gave rise when a team of scientists while conducting work witnessed a lone pregnant female in pursuit by a brown mongoose. This predator-prey relationship illustrates the diminutive size of the mouse-deer since most people can recognize the size of a mongoose, which is a member of the family Herpestidae (weasels belong to the family Mustelidae). The brown mongoose was unsuccessful in its attempt but the mountain mouse deer was exhausted after fleeing into water. The scientists captured

New Zealand, West Coast, Scottish Highlands, island's geographic character
On the west coast the "plains" are tiny patches interrupted by rocky headlands and backed by high and difficult mountain country as far south as the mouth of the Grey. The peculiar multilevel "plain" of Westland lies south of that river and extends for less than a hundred miles. There may once have been a relatively level or slightly rolling plateau surface at some height above the sea; perhaps the coast has since risen a good deal. The steep slopes of the western mountains and their present heavy precipitation suggest that a great load of detritus would have been available to build such a marginal plain. In this now elevated mass the short, swift, mountain rivers have since cut valleys with the same marked development of terraces which is so generally characteristic of the valleys of the

It showed a dark garnet color in the glass. The nose had red ripe berries and fruit with massive cherry, red currant, light strawberry, and dried herbs/grass. On the palate the cherry dominated, with blueberry and ripe currant backing it up with some smokey and grassy notes. This wine has a round mouthfeel with a spicy, hot quality to the finish. The lush nose reveals raspberry, ripe cherry, sweet vanilla, and notes of herbs. The palate follows with black raspberry, cherry and spice. The fruit carries nicely all the way through the long finish, with a hint of red liquorice at the very end. The acidity is sufficient, and the tannins are well integrated and matches the ripe fruit nicely. Medium to full bodied, this wine is sure to not disappoint. We have not been as you can see, with only one out of six bottles remaining, although I planned to cellar a few... Oh well, very enjoyable right now.Find it at WineZap.com from $45.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog Top!

How Much Is That Ferret In The Window? (Highlands Today)
SEBRING — Instead of saying “I love you” with a Christmas kitten this year, how about a ball python, a scorpion, or even one of those warm, fuzzy tarantulas? That’s what Highlands County pet shops are offering as gifts, and yes, they may make the season bright for some new pet owner. But, said Charles [...]

Cruise-Coach trip to Genting Highlands Part 2
I expected a fun full day on the third day of our trip but it was quite the opposite. We were at the outdoor theme park for a few hours. The kids took less than 5 rides, had a bite and returned back to the room. In the late afternoon, it was more just looking at the rides only (poor kids), more walking (aimlessly) around, more eating and again back to the room. Sigh!I didn't enjoy it at all I wonder how the kids would? With all the rides just before their eyes and they weren't allow to ride. Anyway on the last day of our so-call holiday, it was again, eat and go back to 'rest'. Since, everyone was either at the casino or sleeping in the room, I alone bought the kids out. I bought some hair accessories for 妹妹 and 哥哥 ate all the candies he wanted while 妹妹 gobbled up a chicken sausage. Although it was for a short 40 minutes or so, I enjoyed myself. It was really 'free and easy' for me. I explained to 哥哥, though I wished I could let them take rides, I couldn't becaus

      Genting Highlands
I always wanted to go Genting Highlands, because I was not able to play at the theme park several times due to raining. TS say I'm a House Fly (苍蝇), in hokkien it is pronouns as "Ho Sin" aka Rain god meaning pulling rain when I decided to go Genting. Some month before this, I when to Genting and finally played all the Outdoor Theme Park games and I was satisfy on it. Never think to go back and play the Theme Park because there is nothing to play. But TS told me to go as his family is going there after Raya. Want or not, I need to go. Accompany him to do what he like as an expression love to him, I guess. We took the shuttle bus and the cable car. Both also very scary. The bus drove very fast on the winding road on the way to Genting Skyway cable car. I have phobia on heights as sitting on the cable car with just a hook hooking the cable line seems scary. And the more we go up, it became more misty until we are not able to see the next cable cab.Reach and found the room. TS and his f

Lucia 2005 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
This is a favorite of mine year after year along with the on-step-up Lucia, Gary's Vineyard. During my Santa Barbara trip last week I found a 375 ml bottle in a local grocery store and was very excited to find a good half bottle for once...The Lucia 2005 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is primarily made from grapes from Pisoni Vineyards and Gary's Vineyard. Wine maker Jeff Pisoni uses classic Burgundian wine making methods such as fruit sorting, gravity feeding, hand punch downs during fermentation, and ageing in French oak. 850 cases made.In the glass it has a clear, dark ruby red color. The nose displays loads of ripe raspberry, red cherry, lingonberry, floral, and sweet tobacco at the end. Tasting it, the raspberry pops in your mouth again, with red currant, hint of fresh herbs, oak, and soft, ripe tannins. The good acidity dominates the finish with some cherry. This wine is ripe and fruity but still clean and towards the more elegant style. After my first sip of this wine, that

      Vietnamese highlands yield 3000-year-old artefacts
22 July 2007 (Viet Nam News) - Archaeologists have recovered a large amount of 3000-year-old material from a site in the central highlands, leading them to believe that an important commerical centre once existed there. Highlands discoveries may be three millennia old rchaeologists have confirmed that artefacts found in Buon Rau village, Hoa Tien Commune, in Krong Pak (Dac Lac) are as much as 3,000 years old. Local farmers first unearthed what they thought to be antique ceramics and stone tools in 2001 while planting coffee and pepper. They passed them to Dac Lac museum and archaeologists began excavating a 1.5ha site in Buon Rau in 2003. Despite damage caused by farming, after 10 days of digging to a depth of 50cm an archaeological team led by Dr Tran Quy Thinh unearthed a number of ancient artefacts that led experts to declare the site one of the most valuable in the country. Archaeologists have since unearthed thousands of items of pottery, stone tools, and four burial jars. Among

It is called the waterfall of smoky mist because Dray Sap in the E De ethnic people’s language means ‘fall of smoke.’To reach the waterfall, visitors must cross many small slopes and a wooded area where visitors will sometimes see ethnic people with papooses in their back. There are not many tourism services at the waterfall except for a ticket entrance and a beverage booth since Dac Nong Province has not yet started developing tourism services at the popular group of waterfalls.Visitors begin the journey to explore this giant waterfall by climbing down a moss-grown staircase. Durness, Scottish Highlands
Durness lies on the north west coast of Scotland. My visit to Durness was pretty brief, only a few hours on a rainy evening. The beach there is really beautiful. The sand is golden with a hint of peach (I sound like an interior decorator) with many large rocks strewn around the shoreline. This area has some of the oldest rocks and landforms on the planet. Just up from the beach, outside the Tourist Information Office, there is a collection of local rocks with name and age labels. One of the main attractions is Smoo Cave the largest coastline cave in the UK. There’s a large entrance and it’s floodlit inside. There’s a dramatic waterfall in the inner chamber. It’s free to enter and appears to be open all hour although if you visit during the day you can pay few pounds to have an boat trip. Technorati Tags: Durness, Smoo Cave, Scottish Highlands

Capiaux 2004 Garys' Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
After having the Capiaux 2005 Chimera Pinot Noir a while back I had to try the "one step up" pinot noir from them as well. They have several of the these and I picked the Garys' Vineyard having had many pinots , from other wineries, from this appellation before and always enjoying them. This wine shows a slightly cloudy, dark ruby red/purple color in the glass. Aromas of dark and red cherry, raspberry, perfumy floral, and smoke, hits you on the nose. Tasting it, black currant, red cherries, and smokey oak, shows up. This is a medium to full-bodied wine with supple acidity and relatively smooth tannins with a long beautiful, complex, finish. This is a really good pinot that I hope to enjoy many more times in the future. It is a great pinot if you do not like some of the "fruit bomb pinots" that are being made out there. It is very well balanced with great structure. Give it a try!I bought this at a local wine store for $55. You can find it for as low as $40 at Vinfolio.com. I know it is

I’ve not visited the area around Durness before and I wasn’t influenced by the fact that John Lennon had been there. On Monday it’s south down the west coast to Ullapool for 4 nights. On Friday drive to Oban to stay overnight and back home on the Saturday. Keodale near Durness by michael I won’t have a computer or internet access which if I’m on holiday should be a good thing. From growing up in the Hudson Valley as a Boy Scout to hiking with my family I was exposed to one of the number one things this region is known for, the outdoors. I love the city I live in because the area is a densely packed area that is growing faster and faster every day. With three cities within 15 minutes of each other and being just over an hour north of NYC, the area of about 100,000 people has all kinds of things to do. Sounds like a lot of metropolitan areas, however this area has some of our nation’s most renown hiking and outdoor activities. In specific is the backdrop of my city, the Hudson Highlands/ Fishkill Ridge Mountains and Parks. An area so majestic and with such breathtaking views that it was included on the New York State Seal. La Vie Vineyards 2003 Black Mountain Reserve Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
Friday night we had another great Pinot Noir from La Vie Vineyards . I have reviewed the 2004 Rasta Rita Pinot Noir earlier. You can read more about it here. The 2003 Black Mountain Reserve Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir has a dark ruby red/purple color in the glass. The black cherry on the nose overpowers everything else but a hint of sea sand. The black cherry gives room for some ripe black berry on the palate, although the black cherry is still the most prominent taste. A hint of oak, and good acidity that mingles with round tannins. This is a beautiful, lush, Pinot Noir with good back bone and long finish. La Vie Vineyards "Rasta Rita" (referred to above) is a little bit more of a powerhouse Pinot, but this is not to far behind. A beautiful Pinot Noir!Hard to get a hold of, I found this bottle for $36.99 at a small grocery store in Los Olivos, Santa Ynez Valley. Can this Myrica plant benefit the Scottish Highlands?
The plant bog myrtle or to use it’s Latin name Mryica Gale may help revive the rural ecomony in the Scottish Highland. Boots the Chemist are using essential oil from the plant in their sensitive skincare range. At present the bog myrtle grows wild but this will not produce enough oil so there are plans to cultivate the crop. Evidently the boggy Highland soil means that the plant has a higher oil yield. What made me laugh is the premise that the plant should be known by it’s supposedly more appealing name of sweet gale, as it is felt that the bog part of bog mrytle is unappealing. I think a better solution would be to use the Latin name of Myrica Gale especially as one of the advertised properties of the skin cream will be anti-ageing and Myrica sounds very similar to miracle. On a more serious note I think that projects which can inject money and jobs into rural areas by utilising the natural attributes of a region are a marvelous thing. However it could also be an oppo

Traveling around Cameron Highlands, you will be able to see many farms located in various places. Many of the vegetables supplied in Malaysia and to Singapore are grown here. The farms were initially established in the 1930's to supply markets in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The cool damp climate is ideal for growing both fruit and vegetables. You can find vegetable farms spread throughout the highlands from Ringlet to Kampung Raja. In order to maximize the land usage, some of the farms are carved right on to the steep hillside. Many are terraced neatly on the hillsides and it makes for an interesting view. The range of produce is quite extensive and includes cabbages, broccoli, cauliflowers, potatoes, leeks, baby corn, peppers, brussel sprouts, lettuce, chili's and tomatoes. The range of fruit is no less impressive and includes apples, oranges, strawberries, tangerine oranges, grapefruit, and passion fruit.
