Why Antioxidants are Important for Hepatitis C Patients
By: Nicole Cutler, L.Ac.For anyone living with Hepatitis C, supporting your liver in every way possible with the intent to slow the progression of the disease is vital. A healthy diet rich in antioxidants is one easy and effective way you can achieve this goal.A byproduct of the cellular oxidation witnessed when a substance is broken down, free radicals are atoms with an unpaired electron. This creates a chemical instability capable of damaging the walls of cells as well the genetic materials contained within them. Antioxidants combat this process by reducing the damage caused by free radicals.Studies have shown that oxidation plays a large role in the advancement of liver disease, Alternately, various studies showed the far-ranging benefits of antioxidants, making them vitally important t

10 Helpful Tips - Reducing Dry Mouth for Hepatitis C

However, researchers and doctors have discovered a link between severe liver disease and a condition called xerostomia. Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is when the mouth simply is not producing the amount of saliva necessary for normal, daily oral functioning, such as speaking, chewing and swallowing. While xerostomia may not be a painful condition, it certainly can cause a great deal of discomfort. You may be wondering, just how does this dry mouth condition affect people with liver disease? What is the connection? Dry mouth is a common side effect of certain medications, especially those used to treat depression. And, since many people who suffer from Hepatitis C experience bouts of depression, this condition is likely a result of the medications they are taking.Chronic dry mouth is not just an uncomfortable nuisance; it can also lead to further

Liver and Gall BladderRib pain (intercostal neuralgia)Gall stone painHepatitisJaundiceThe liver and gall bladder system play an important role in maintaining health. The liver is the largest gland in the body, situated in the uppermost part of the abdominal cavity on the right side beneath the diaphragm. It is largely protected by the ribs. The liver develops in the embryo as an outgrowth of the intestine and always retains a close link with the digestive system. We can think of the liver as the largest chemical factory in the body in that it carries out most of the intermediate metabolism. That is, it changes the nutrients absorbed from the small intestine and makes them suitable for use by the body tissues. The liver also modifies waste products and toxic substances to make them suitable for excretion in the bile or the urine. Enzymes in the liver stimulate the production of glycogen (a complex sugar), which is derived from carbohydrate foods such as whole grains and vegeta

Can Hepatitis C Be Transmitted Through Sexual Contact?
By Nicole Cutler There are various possible modes of transmission for the Hepatitis C virus, however a significant portion of those infected cannot identify how they may have contracted the disease. A few of the primary suspects in HCV transmission are blood transfusions (before proper blood screening procedures were implemented) and IV drug use. Though, medical researchers are now making a case for transmission through sexual contact. Since Hepatitis C is spread through the blood, sexual transmission is entirely possible, but only when there is blood-to-blood contact with an infected individual.Although Hepatitis C may be transmitted by sexual contact, studies have shown that monogamous relationships carry a very low transmission risk. Since hepatitis is blood-borne, sexual activity that is more traumatic to the body's tissues, or when there is some sort of bleeding or open sore, inherently carries more risk. Some HCV-infected people may be at a higher risk of transmitting the virus

Hepatitis C! How To Find Good Life Insurance Rates!
Hep C is the most common chronic blood borne infection in the United States. The insidious nature of the disease is such that often people will not experience symptoms for years, even decades, after they are infected. Life insurance underwriting for Hep C is a careful process and is really broken down into two parts. The first part is the obvious. You have the disease and it was treated. What medical problems did the disease cause while you had it and what is the current status of the disease and it’s main target, the liver. Current status can be summed up with lab tests that show liver functions and the viral load. To determine potential problems that a person may have incurred from the disease it is very common for a liver ultrasound or biopsy to also be done to see what damage the liver has incurred. The other underwriting factor is the impact of the treatment . The most common treatment today is interferon. While it is successful in reversing about 50% of Hep C cases, it&rsq

However, as long as we talk about epidurals and past surgeries and avoid philosophy and 19th century Spanish literature, I can generally muddle through. We have a LOT of Spanish speaking patients at my hospital. Generally, they are polite and grateful that someone is making an attempt to communicate with them. This lady, unfortunately, was not typical. I walk into the room and introduce myself with my general disclaimer (in Spanish): I speak a little Spanish and as long as you speak slowly, I can also understand it. The next thing I meant to say was: Have you ever had an epidural? Except it came out as: Did you used to have an epidural? This lady looks at me, rolls her eyes, and says, do you mean to say 'have I ever had an epidural?'Bitch. Are you really giving me 'tude?
