May the 5th, 2006. Helsinki train station. We were on our way to the harbor in Helsinki to catch a ferry back to Tallinn when we saw smoke in the sky and anxious groups pf people moving towards it, making phone calls, looking around with eyes big with fear and confusion. We went in the same direction and had to stop near Kiasma, the modern art museum set just next to the train station. The was a heat wave and a wall of fire, basically we saw what you can see in the picture. 'Somebody blew the train up!' was my first thought.It turned out that buildings on fire were warehouses occupied (only until that day) by artists, free souls, hippies and others. The city wanted to tear these buildings down, but somebody set them on fire in an act of protest.

All right, this is staggering! The legendary Dave Mustane and Megadeth are coming to Helsinki in order to start their tour. The band is going to play in Helsinki ice hockey hall on February 4th 2008. There seems to be tickets available, even though they started selling them already few days ago. This free-ranging octet from Australia has brought forth their second album and it's a veritable funhouse adventure. Experimental, but gently so, their diverse instrumentation and varied approaches to vocal presentations (theatrical character voices, choirs, rock band exuberance) make for a listening experience akin to someone's perfectly cerebral mix tape. The opening song alone sets the stage for all that follows, constructed like an overture, one theme and setting gives way to another. Much like the parable of three blind men trying to describe an elephant, if three different listeners heard three different songs from this wonderful album, there still would be no complete description possible.

I think there are two schools of thought concerning this new album from Architecture In Helsinki. The first school of thought is from those that were big fans of their 2005 release, In Case We Die, and that camp seems to be generally not to crazy about the new record. Cameron’s vocals are raised to a new level and that can annoy depending on your preferences. The other camp, which knew of the 05 album, but did not spend considerable time with it, seems to really dig the album quite a bit without that frame of reference to In Case We Die. I think I am falling a bit more into the latter camp as we approach tomorrow’s release of the album however. AIH have trimmed down a bit since then as well, but still remain a robust 6 piece. The oddness of the band’s sound is honestly part of the appeal I think, and while at times it can sound a bit over the top, overall I think it works. Reindeer - the Finnish Icon I was drawn to Helsinki by tales of an art lecturer about the wild and wonderful world of Finland, and a childhood love of Tove Jansson’s stories about the Moomintroll family. Their adventures included a summer floating in an abandoned theatre, the strange things that happened after a comet landed nearby, the entire family moving to a lighthouse on a tiny island, hibernating for winter after drinking pine needle cordial, and the arrival of spring which was marked by the return of Moonmintroll’s best friend Snufkin, a wandering musician. Moomin characters such as the Fillyjonk (who believed in disaster), the mournful Hemulen and feisty Little My also enchanted my childhood, while the wonderfully philosophical Moominmamma’s Finnish pancakes (with strawberry jam and cream) provided an added enticement to visit this other world. Missive from Helsinki Funny how things work. You don't wanna come home for so long, and then you look at the bank account and September 17 can't come quite soon enough. I booked passage home from Copenhagen next week, and although I'd love to stay longer - the pocketbook wont allow it. It's been beautiful and warm for Helsinki. Yesterday, after dropping off my gear at the Olympic Stadium Hostel (actually in the stadium), I hopped around the city, checking out the Fish Market which sells anything but fish and around the peninsula, eyeing the Gulf of Finland and relaxing on some rocks by the beach. I'm here for one more day it turns out, tomorrow afternoon I catch the train to Hankö and then a boat to Rostock, Germany. 22 hours on the Baltic. Should be fun....
