Life's Little Mysteries: Why Do Women Wear High Heels and Why Did the Kamikaze Pilots Wear Helmets?
In this Daily Mail article, Robert Frank uses economics to explain the situations you encounter in everyday life. For example -- Why do women endure uncomfortable high heels? High heels are uncomfortable and make walking more difficult. But they also increase height, as well as forcing the back to arch, pushing the bosom forward and the buttocks back, thereby accentuating the female form -- and men, apparently, prefer an exaggerated female figure. Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets? In 1944, the Japanese military launched a campaign of kamikaze attacks, in which pilots attempted to crash explosives-laden planes into American warships. Why did these pilots wear helmets for a suicide mission? Planes often experienced severe turbulence before reaching their targets, so they needed to pr

      History of Motorcycle Helmets
The first motorcycle was invented by Gottlieb Daimler in 1885. I am not sure what the maximum speed capacity of those first motorcycles was but today in our busy society the speed means a lot. Probably no one even imagined about motorcycle helmets back then with speed not being an issue and the roads not being filled with millions of motor vehicles. But the speed is an issue today and so are the motorcycle helmets. The first motorcycle helmet was invented by Prof. Charles F. Lombard who developed a unique energy absorbing helmet for the United States Air Force. So, the first motorcycle helmet was not designed as a motorcycle helmet but it was rather designed for aviation. Dr. Lombard patented his unique invention which was applied not only to aviation but also automobile racing, motorcycles, hockey, etc… (more…)

      Motorcycle Helmets be smart
For many riders, motorcycle helmets do not fit into their dream accessory. They feel helmets are restrictive and unnecessary and do not add to their aesthetic appeal. But it is important to know why you need to wear a helmet while riding a bike and what it does for you. Motorcycle helmets act as a protection device for your head. Nearly all motor crashes in which riders do not wear helmets, result in major head injuries. To drive this point further, according to a survey done in the state of California, in 900 crashes, there were 980 head and neck injuries. The major factor was that most riders were not wearing proper headgear. Canada has made it a mandatory rule for motorbike riders to wear helmets after seeing the way people die in these accidents. But in the USA, in some states, it still remains a choice for the rider – so it is for you to decide what is more precious to you. Hopefully, now that you are convinced about purchasing a helmet, let us see some of the things that you sh

Road accidents are the leading cause of deaths worldwide. Accident rate is rising rapidly in the world just due to the increase in the number of vehicles. Head injuries in motorcycle accidents are one of the major cause of death or serious injuries. Tanizawa helmets out of this world
It would seem as though these helmets from Tanizawa of Japan are pre-cursors to those full-faced helmets worn by Clone Troopers before the Empire was formed. A couple of versions were paraded at the Japan Wireless Show, where 'A' came with a W-CDMA (FOMA) card, an integrated telephone, GPS navigation, a RFID chip, and a camera that displays real-time audio and video information. As for the 'B' mode, it boasts a vibrating system, an integrated walkie-talkie, solar panels, and simple visualization via a LED display. Sounds as though these would find a place on the battlefield. You know how hard it is communicating with someone else in the midst of battle - just take a look at how Captain Lennox fared in Transformers as he tried to call the Pentagon while battling Scorponok.(Via UberGizmo, the Gadgets News Blog.)

      Helmets: protecting us from ourselves
I live in the Yukon where some guy who rides his bike all year round — like, through the frozen streets of winter — convinced city council that for my own safety I must wear a helmet while I sashay a bike path along the Yukon River. There is a $25 fine (I think) if I don’t. Talk about boiling blood. I understand why we’re forced to wear car seat belts: the state doesn’t give a shit if we live or die, they just don’t want us to linger between life and death in some highly expensive vegetative state. Got it. But where do you draw the bleeding line? I was nattering about this to a visitor from the UK the other day telling her that in some jurisdictions kids are forced to wear helmets … while playing soccer! Seeing her shock I, quite naturally, pushed the point: I’ve even seen swimmers at our pool wearing helmets while practicing their turns. Really? Well, no but it’s getting to that: my wife wouldn’t take our grandchild out in

      Gear: Bike Helmets
When I was a kid we did not have bike helmets. We would slam on our front brakes of our 3 speed bikes and go ass over teakettle onto the pavement. Heck I was hit by a car when I was 11 years old. I had an old banana seat bike that I road everywhere on the Cape. I still have the front wheel of the bike. It was traumatic but not nearly as traumatic as this story.Bike helmet crushed, but head fineAll I can say is holy crap. I cannot imagine having a truck run over your head and survive it. I guess bike helmets work. I wear one now. Not because of the story, I've been wearing one for a while, probably after they started looking more sleek and less geek. December 10 - Cybermen Helmets
Firebox has announced their latest addition, a spiffy Cyberman helmet! Much as we love the Daleks they've got one major deficiency: they don't wear helmets. (Well they do, but plungers on pudding bowls don't count). And as every sci-fi nut knows, any baddie worth his bio-matter vaporiser needs a mean-looking lid. Just ask Darth Vader, Boba Fett (Both Star Wars) and the Cylons (Battle Star Galactia - My Personal Favorite). But when it comes to iconic headgear, nothing beats the spectacularly cool helmets worn by the new breed of Cybermen. Designed to replace the tinfoil tat worn by previous incarnations of the cybernetically augmented nasties, these stunning 2006 redesigns have an ominous, art deco look about them, giving a whole new generation of Dr Who fans cause to scarper behind the sofa. And now, thanks to Firebox, you can own an officially licensed replica without taking the Tardis to Mondas. Lovingly crafted by the exact same team behind the menacing met
