      Hedging Forex Strategy
Currency hedging refers to a strategy that strives to minimize the exposure to exchange rate fluctuations, thereby minimizing the uncertainty of future transactions denominated in a foreign currency and providing some stability to earnings and cash flow. This is typically accomplished through the use of options or futures contracts. Forward contracts can also be used to hedge currency risk. However, while forward contracts are superior to futures in terms of their overall risk reduction, there is no central market for forward contracts, which contributes to higher transaction costs and lower liquidity, as well as counterparty risk (i.e. the risk that the contract will not be honoured at expiration). When a business chooses to hedge its exposure to foreign currency, the objective is to

      Futures, Options and hedging
If your first thought is – Options and value investing …what a combination? You are not alone. You will rarely find discussions on options and derivatives in books and articles on value investing. But then just because most value investors don’t talk about options, does not mean one should not even try to understand them. That said, let me clarify – I am not an expert, heck not even a novice on options. I have read a few books on options and derivatives, bought a few here and there. However I am planning to read up more on options and understand them better – it would improve my understanding of probability. Most of the discussions I have seen on options is around the strike price. A lot of investors look at options as leveraged bets on the stock price. It goes like this – Lets a

The State Board of Administration might have frozen withdrawals from its local government investment pool after a run on the fund. But that hasn't stopped the Pasco school district from taking steps to protect its assets. This evening, the Pasco School Board authorized its administration to take a $27-million line of credit with Bank of America to help with the cash crunch created by the fund crisis. It also gave the superintendent permission to open new investment accounts that will offer a better return than the state investment pool. As of Nov. 30, the district terminated all electronic fund transfers to the state account, and all revenue will come directly to the district. CFO Olga Swinson said she expected more than $100-million in tax collections to arrive soon, and she wanted to have a place to put the money. The state pool has experienced problems as governments have removed investments after learning that a piece of the fund was invested in defaulted debt. Read more here.

It’s hard to believe with oil approaching $100 per barrel, but the U.S. will consume over 1 billion (that’s 1,000,000,000) more gallons of gasoline in 2007 than in 2006. As a certain President once said, we are energy junkies.  We keep craving more regardless of the price.   Ask yourself this: Are you plugging more stuff into the wall each year? That requires even more oil, natural gas or coal. China, India and the other new economies also consume more energy each year.  Political instability in Nigeria, Iran, and Venezuela could limit supply. And, there’s only so much oil (natural gas and coal) in the ground. I’m not suggesting we’ll run out but it will become more expensive to extract it.   How can you ease the pain every time you fill up? Or better, how can you benefit from higher energy prices? By investing in energy companies. There are two ways to do this. You can buy a

In fact, by following this plan, I hope to lose money. By the end of this post, hopefully, you will understand why.______________________________I tend to think that we are on the verge of a global economic and societal collapse driven by diminishing marginal returns on civilization’s investment in complexity—especially by the declining availability of surplus energy. I don’t think that this will result in a single, catastrophic collapse event, but rather in a slow, grinding decline that is masked by epiphenomena and the confusion of symptoms and causes, effectively negating our ability, as a society, to muster the will to take effective mi

      HEDGING WAR by Sherry Chandler
I have been very slowly reading my way through Chris Hedges' War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning (Public Affairs, 2002). I find it very slow going because every page seems to rip my heart out. Hedges is a great writer; the book is riveting, but it a portrait of humankind at its most brutal.I am slow in getting to this book because its publicity and its release date made me misconstrue what kind of book it is. Hedges was a war correspondent for The New York Times for 15 years, seeing action in South America, the Balkans, and the Middle East. But he studied English literature and Christian theology at Colgate University and Harvard Divinity School. He is a man who counted on memorized poems from Shakespeare and Yeats to keep him sane while held hostage during Iraq-the-first, who quoted to himself W. H. Auden's "Epitaph on a Tyrant" while watching a woman and two small children drinking water from muddy puddles outside Kuwait City (pp 90-91). (See Michael Parker's Journal for a commen

Last night Eliot Spitzer was interviewed on Channel 7’s news while touring the Buffalo area.  He was discussing the economic doldrums here.  While stating that the State would need to take steps to turn around our economy, he said “it is going to be difficult.” Isn’t that why he was elected?  He promised to make the hard choices, the choices between right and wrong that are necessary to “rightsize” government in this State. Mr. Governor-elect, if you are listening, you are right, it will be difficult but it needs to be done.  The following are some of the steps necessary to improve our economy: Eliminate pork Reduce the size of the State government Reduce the cost of Medicaid to the Counties Eliminate the wasteful plethora of Public Authorities Repeal the laws favoring Public Service Unions in contract negotiations Change NYS’s status as the Cadillac of social service programs back to the Chevy Impala of social se
