      Planting Privet Hedges
In coastal New England when planting privet hedges you might want to tie them down. Winds can be strong and gusty and we learned the hard way -scroll down to the last image here: Crushed Gravel Driveway and Paking I am so glad we chose planting privet hedges over installing a wood fence. We're now solidly sheltered from the road and the landscaping bolders I think add a lot of character to the pro

Brian Hedges told me to steal this now!
From Bryan Hedges in Australia,In the last few days I have been watching an old man, in old shabby clothing scrape paint off a brick wall adjoining the service station where I work part time. Due to EPA regulations he has to use paint stripper then scrape off layer after layer of old paint, in order to get back to the original brick work. It is slow, tedious, dirty work. The old man gets to work i

The Parable Of The Pipeline by Burke Hedges
The Parable Of The Pipeline by Burke Hedges Once upon a time long, long ago, two ambitious young cousins named Pablo and Bruno lived side by side in a small Italian village. The young men were best buddies, and big dreamers. They would talk endlessly about how someday, someway, they would become the richest men in the village. They were both bright and hard working. All they needed was an opportunity. One day that opportunity arrived. The village decided to hire two men to carry water from a nearby river to a cistern in the town square. The job went to Pablo and Bruno. Each man grabbed two buckets and headed to the river. By the end of the day, they had filled the town cistern to the brim. The village elder paid them one penny for each bucket of water. "This is our dream come true!

Shrubs and Hedges to Protect Against Cold Winter Winds
Due to the steady rise in heating and cooling costs over the past decade, homeowners are taking advantage of every money saving idea that comes there way. One of the most popular methods in recent years is landscaping for energy efficiency. Shade trees that block the sun and lower air conditioning bills and privacy screens that double as wind barriers for the cold winter months have become staples in the attempt to save energy and funds through landscape.Another method that is utilized far less often, yet is every bit as effective, is foundation planting for insulation. Perennials planted alongside your home are beautiful in the summer, but planting dense shrubs will deflect cold winds from chilling your home and insulate your foundation. Not surprisingly, this simple act can lower your he

Rajnath hedges on clean chit to Badal
New Delhi, May 22 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh Tuesday refused to support the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), its partner in Punjab, on the strike call against the Dera Sacha Sauda sect as well as the SAD-led state government registering a police complaint against the sect leader. The Akali protests over sect leader Gurmit Ram Rahim dressing up as the 10th Sikh guru Gobind Singh and the violent agitation by hardline Sikhs against Dera followers in its aftermath has caused serious embarrassment to the BJP and raised questions about the durability of the Akali Dal-BJP alliance. At a press conference held to condemn the three-year rule of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule in Delhi, Rajnath Singh Tuesday had a tough time fielding questions on the Sikh protests over Dera, and fought shy of defending the Akali Dal. In reply to a spate of questions, he merely said, “I have spoken to Prakash Singh Badal (Punjab chief minister). I insisted that law and

      The problem with hedges
Hedges can be the most beautiful and useful plantings that gardeners could ever turn their hands to. But, they can also be the most infuriating. Why? For a hedge to work well it relies on teamwork. Every plant in the hedge needs to pull its own weight and grow at the same rate that all the others do. If they don't, you end up with a hedge that looks incomplete. When we arrived back from our weekend away we discovered that some drunken louts had decided to try and jump our lavender hedge, and unfortunately they failed. Rather than break a few twigs they left a complete hole in the hedge that will take years to rectify. And this is the problem with hedges. It only takes a single plant to throw the whole hedge into disarray. One minute the hedge looks fantastic - the next it looks like a 6 year-old's row of pearlers when they lost their first tooth. Is there a way to fix hedges? Sure. If you're willing to take the time. Here are a few options; Leave it to grow - most fast-g

      Trimming the Hedges
When I switched from day shift to night shift last June, I was eager to make a good impression on my new coworkers. I have 10 blueberry bushes in my back yard that are of varying size and productivity. One of the oldest bushes was really producing a huge amount of berries everyday, and I had brought about a quart and a half of berries to work with me that first night. I thought that I could share them with the other nurses. After a couple of hours, I filled a bowl with the fresh berries and put it out at the nurses' station.Would anyone like some blueberries? I asked. They're from my bush.Complete silence for about thirty seconds. Thanks, what else have you got down there? This story illustrates a universal truth: Labor nurses will talk about your bush. But don't think you can find out here what we think and then gussy yourself up before you go into labor to avoid being talked about. Because we don't all agree. I think that the guiding principles of our bush styles, much l

      Chris Hedges on Democracy Now
Amy Goodman of Democracy Now interviewed Chris Hedges tonight. He is the former New York Times Middle East bureau chief and author of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning. Hedges is the son of a Presbyterian minister and has a master's degree in theology from Harvard. His latest book is entitled, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America."American Fascists" argues that dominionism seeks absolute power in a Christian state. According to Hedges, the movement bears a strong resemblance to the young fascist movements in Italy and Germany in the 1920s and '30s.Here is the transcript of the interview.AMY GOODMAN: It's good to have you with us. Why did you write this book? CHRIS HEDGES: Anger. I mean, I grew up in the Church and, of course, as you mentioned, graduated from seminary, and I think these people have completely perverted and distorted and manipulated the Christian message into something that is the very antithesis of certainly what Jesus preached
