What is a hedge fund? A hedge fund does not exist as far as the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission is concerned. There is, in all actuality, no such thing as a hedge fund. But, hedge funds do exist, so the question is: how and what are they? In short, hedge funds a groups of stocks, bonds and securities that are managed by a portfolio manage for the intense purpose of returning profit and maintain investment, regardless of market conditions. This is why the Securities and Exchange Commission cannot recognize hedge funds. They guarantee a return and as every investor knows there is no such thing as a sure thing. And, in truth, hedge funds are not a sure thing. Interestingly, hedge funds are also not the boldest investment schemes available on the market. In fact they are the opposi

This study was completed by George Martin and Joseph Pescatore from the University of Massachusetts and Jefferies Asset Management.Pescatore makes the point that in the past there was a somewhat negative connotation to discussing how a hedge fund may have received seed capital or operational support during their firs 3-5 years of operation. Specifically he said, “The question investors asked a hedge fund manager, ‘if you are any good, why do you need these guys?’ I think not only has it changed, I think that has completely reversed.” It seems that Pescatore now believe that

Hedge Fund OriginQ&A: Where did the name hedge fund come from?Alfred W. Jones is credited with coining the term "hedge fund" in 1949. Jones was the first known to employ portfolio managers while turning his company into a limited partnership. Hedge Fund PlatformsHedge Fund PlatformsThere has been a half dozen articles in the last year about private hedge fund platforms being setup or launched by firms such as the Man Group. I'm sure it will be sooner than that. There is a lot of money to be skimmed within a multi-asset class platform and many hedge funds would pay a premium for more anonymity and

Hedge Fund AdministratorsWhat are Hedge Fund Administrators?Hedge fund administrators offer a way to reduce tedious time-consuming operational activities for hedge fund managers, while simultaneously bolstering the average investors' confidence in a hedge fund. The role of a hedge fund administrator is to provide financial and tax reporting. Such reporting includes: audits and coordinating taxes; anti-money laundering as well as the new know-your-client procedures. While these are important duties for a hedge fund, outsourcing to a hedge fund administrator allows hedge fund managers to pay more attention to managing the investment portfolio and servicing clients. The hiring of a hedge fund administrator can significantly consolidate operational staff and reduces excess administrative ex

Hedge Fund CollapseSurvival of the Fittest Hedge FundsIn 1859, Charles Darwin introduced his theory on “On the origin of species” through this now famous preamble: As many more individuals of each species are born than can possibly survive; and as, consequently, there is a frequently recurring struggle for existence, it follows that any being, if it vary however slightly in any manner profitable to itself, under the complex and sometimes varying conditions of life, will have a better chance of surviving, and thus be naturally selected.” The (very non organic) species of the hedge fund industry have been aptly playing out this struggle for existence over the last few months as famous names such as Peloton Partners, Carlyle Fund, Carrington Capital, Amaranth Advisors and the mother loa

Hedge Fund Due DiligenceHedge Fund Due Diligence Guide New hedge funds are launched daily, which is constantly increasing the importance of determining which hedge funds are appropriate for you or your firm to invest in becomes increasingly important. Hedge Fund PerformanceHedge Fund Performance - Finance SectorHedge funds in the finance sector have performed dismally as one of only two hedge fund benchmarks to have a negative performance. A recent report by Hedge Fund Net shows that although finance sector hedge funds have not shown great numbers when compared to other hedge funds, they have “outperformed their closest benchmark by more percentage points than any other equity related hedge fund sector in the last twelve months.” Also, if you take into consideration the harsh conditions that exist in the finance sector—the housing bubble and the looming economic recession—these hedge funds have performed relatively well. The HFN data demonstrates that finance sector hedge funds have showed signs of improvement. Hedge Fund Investing7 Tips for Successful Hedge Fund InvestingI just read an article a couple days ago that sounded like a similar one of mine you might have read called "How to Invest in Hedge Funds." This article was by Scott Frush and it covers the seven strategies for successful hedge fund investing. Here is his 7 tips for investing in hedge funds. None of the tips below are financial advice from myself or from the author of the article that I am summarizing below. 1. Do Your HomeworkSince hedge funds are not regulated by the SEC or government, it's up to you to research and evaluate a hedge fund before investing in it.2. Invest In Proven ManagersAlthough investing in a manager with an impressive past performance will not guarantee the same results, it is a good rule of thumb to fol
Hedge Fund SpeculationAre Hedge Funds Becoming More Speculative? Here is a question I recently received: "I recently heard that Hedge Funds have become so common of a financial instrument for institutions that they might not be providing the desired speculation. So the next generation of hedge funds must have to be more speculative, like a spec fund."There are a of hedge fund managers in the industry now, over 15,000. This means that average returns will fall a bit and the quality of managers overall will have a lower mean...but I do not think it forces most hedge fund managers to be more speculative, in fact I think it has the opposite effect. There is so much competition now among hedge funds that institutional investors and the ultra-wealthy are becoming more picky wanting to work with
Bulldog Sues SECPhil Goldstein of the Hedge Fund, Bulldog Investors is suing the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) for its ban on hedge fund marketing and advertising.Phil Goldstein told the Financial Times: "We want to be able to have a website like any other business. The only websites required to pre-qualify people are hedge funds and pornography . . . gun shops are allowed to advertise, the Massachusetts state lottery is allowed to have a website. We want to be treated like any other business." "We are not asking regulators to be allowed to sell to unqualified investors. We are simply saying that they are not going to be harmed by getting the information," Mr. Goldstein said about his plan to make fund web sites available to all. "We have three options and suing the U.S. Securiti
This is an abstract off the article concerning the state of the American hedge fund industry, Hedge Trimming from The New Yorker. found the article very informative, and decided to do a review of it here for those who do not have the time or easy access to that issue of the magazine. John Cassidy enlightens the casual New Yorker audience with a review of the hedge fund industry. The story entails a former London banker, Harry Kat, who stumbled into the field while pursuing an academic life. What he had observed did not leave much of a morally respectable notion. Privately owned, typical hedge funds operate as financial companies. They generally raise capital off moderately affluent clients, ranging from charitable groups to individuals of high net worth. The business model centers on

Hedge Fund InterviewHedge Fund Interviews - Interview QuestionsEvery couple of months I do a short interview with a investment blog. It usually involves a short phone call or email exchange over some take out rather than the type of hype seen here in the picture to the left, but it is fun none the less. Thanks to TheAge for the picture. Here is the interview: Thank you for participating in the 2nd “insider’s” interview. The goal of this series is to pick the brains of insiders who deal with the business of money and to try to dig beyond the headlines. Tell me a little about yourself and what you do? My name is Richard Wilson and I am a hedge fund consultant and founder of the Hedge Fund Group (HFG). I work for a third party marketing firm and our job is to find new investors

New Hedge FundsThere are somewhere between 15,000 and 19,000 hedge funds now in existence. Hundreds of new hedge funds are started each year and at least 10,000 are large enough to officially be noted within major databases and formal tracking systems."The hedge fund industry remains a very exciting space, and professionals that want to be in an autonomous environment are still very attracted to hedge funds," says Marc Bender, chief operating officer of EFX Capital.HFR data indicates that over 900 hedge funds were launched in 2007 alone while around 500 were liquidated. IDD notes that "This compares to 1,518 new funds in 2006 with 717 liquidations, and 2,073 launches and 848 liquidations in 2005, a record year. The pool of hedge funds in the almost-$2 trillion industry is around 10,000.""T

What is Tim Barakett's Atticus Captial hedgefund returns? They are stunning. Last year, its main fund was up 40% (even after deducting for his juicy fees). He buys a lot of call options on his stock holdings as well to increase his returns.
According to The Wall Street Journal "Debt-rating agency Moody's Investors Service, signaling a new turn for the worse for some bank-affiliated funds, said it...

Predictable I know. However, I am going on a trip to Canada this week and have found a Lamborghini garage where the owner is my new best friend. He is moving to Geneva soon and I aim to have him on my Christmas list as soon as possible. Not just because he is a nice chap, but also because he owns one of every model of Lamborghini ever made and that, my friend, is an awesome reason to visit his
http://www.kansascity.com/business/story/348179.html"Two principals of a hedge fund linked to a Ponzi scheme that swindled individuals worldwide, including Kansas investors, have been ordered to cough up the funds they fraudulently obtained.
Kansas federal Judge Richard D. Rogers last week ordered Alain A. Assemi to disgorge $577,598 and John D. Friedrich to disgorge $277,340. He also ordered them to pay prejudgment interest of $39,440 and $18,938, respectively.
The two were owners and managers of Seaforth Meridian of New York., a hedge fund that purported to invest in A-rated fixed-income bonds and corporate securities. Between May 2004 and October 2005, Seaforth attracted investments totaling nearly $22 million from 75 limited partner investors, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission."
Previously I mentioned a new payment portal solution company called U-GotCash.com that is starting and the opportunity to become a founding shareholder and have an equity stake in it. In further research, it appears that there are some positive correlations with several other companies that may make this a safe investment.
To become a shareholder of U-Gotcash, you will have to sign up at FinancePortalSolutions (FPS). FPS is headquartered in Panama City, Panama and offers a range of investment solutions. According to their website, there are currently four different programs that are being offered, Gap Funding, Hedge Funding, Offshore Structuring/Banking, and the U-GotCash payment portal.
Invest in any of their programs and your investment will grow within a certain period of time depending on the program you are registered to. Here is the list from the site:

LONDON, Oct 1 (Reuters) - British fund firm New Star Asset Management said on Monday it had equity commitments of $50 million and that it wanted to raise up to $400 million for its new real estate hedge fund. The New Star Real Estate Hedge Fund Limited, announced in July and launched on Monday, will be managed by Robin White -- formerly of Rock Capital -- and will invest mainly in European listed property securities such as real estate investment trusts REITs).
A few months ago, Tim asked me to review his new book that was due out on October 1st. If Tim's name is familiar to you, it may be because you have seen him on CNBC or MSNMoney.com as a commentator, or on a reality show called "Wall Street Warriors".Always up for a good investment book, I agreed to do the review, and I am glad I did.The book started out slow for me, as it goes over some of Tim's early history during childhood, and his pre-college days. The part of the book I really liked starts after he receives $12,415 in Bar Mitzvah money. That is when Tim starts to trade. This part of the book details the different strategies he employed, the ups and downs (mostly ups) of his day to day trading. I found it pretty exciting, as this is what I do every day as well. I think anyone who trades often will enjoy seeing how Tim did in the market, and how he did it. The lessons he learns, the choices he makes, etc. The time period that the book takes place is perfect, as it encompasses the
