If you’ve been "surrounded by airport insanity" in Heathrow's Terminal 5 you’ll appreciate this.
They lost my bags, they lost my wife too… The Guardian reported last week that Terminal 5 is still losing 900 bags per day; travellers on connecting flights have a one in 12 chance of being separated from their luggage. Nice.

London Heathrow airport's latest building, Terminal 5, launched last month after almost two decades of planning, $8.5 billion dollars in cost, and 100 million hours in manpower. It is a glass and concrete and steel marvel, the largest free standing building in the UK, with over 10 miles in suitcase moving belts, and was supposed to be a cure for the Airport's famous congestion by way of massive automation. But on its opening day it just did not work right. This week, British Airways' plans to move its long haul operations from the crowded main terminal to the new terminal were pushed back til June. Much of the press was quick to say that tech was the source of the failings in parking, luggage handling and check in, but here are the details I can find on what exactly caused endless lines an

The check-in procedures have been suspended at Heathrow's new £4.3bn Terminal 5, which opened to the public today. It seems to get worse. One worker said, "The computer cannot cope with the number of bags going through". Oh yes! Is that so? What sort of management have the shareholders of British Airways hired? It is all crazy! British Airways, which has sole use of the terminal, cancelled 34 flights due to "teething problems" and was later forced to stop the luggage check-in. In a statement, BA said it had experienced "initial teething problems" first thing in the morning, which had caused delays in staff arriving at their posts. Difficulties included car parking provision, delays in staff security screening and staff familiarisation and "some baggage performance issues", it said. It's all
Baggage problems have hit the Terminal 5 public opening at Heathrow Airport. Some wag employed by British Airways blamed glitches with the bags on problems with "staff familiarisation". Many passengers apparently faced problems with their baggage. A BBC reporter on a flight to Paris said no passenger bags had arrived. Luggage belonging to travellers landing in the UK also failed to arrive. What is it with large companies today? They take the pounds but appear to have little or no interest in customer service. It beggars belief that British Airways, trumpeting this big hangar as the be all and end all of flight delays and passenger problems, sees this cock-up as a lack of "staff familiarisation"!! They've had years to plan to get it right!Do those running the company deserve their top jobs?

Airbus SAS's A380 superjumbo made its first commercial landing in London today, making Heathrow airport the third location to be served by the plane. The Singapore Airlines Ltd. flight arrived in the U.K. capital at about 2:50 p.m. The A380's first customer has been flying two of the 471-seat planes between the southeast Asian city-state and Sydney since October and added the London route after taking delivery of a third.Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, will be the biggest A380 hub, according to Toulouse, France-based Airbus, with an estimated 90 of the double-decker aircraft operating regularly there by 2020. Heathrow Airport finally got round to the official opening of the new Terminal 5 yesterday. This futuristic building has so much on offer that apparently passsengers will get through all the checks and security in 10 minutes. According to Ann Macmillan, the resident Canadian Broadcasting reporter in London, this vast open span "village" can get 35 million through in a year! "That's the population of Canada!" she quipped to the BBC. I had visions of a mixed bag of mounties, fur trappers, Inuit, and lumberjacks all trying to pass through. A touch of the Monty Pythons?I do recognise this as a major step forward for the UK' air transport industry. It's only a pity that the management of BAA and British Airways always seem to have problems popping up. The latest is that BA pilots are are planni

London's Heathrow Airport is set to launch a Personal Rapid Transport System that will make it faster for business class passengers to shuttle between their cars and check in terminals. The fleet will consist of 18 pods that will glide on specially installed raised guide ways at 25 mph. The system is scheduled to begin functioning when Heathrow's Terminal 5 opens in two years time.
Shaped like futuristic space capsules, the advantages these driverless pods offer are numerous for London's transport system and passengers - no queues, no grumpy drivers, and no emissions. Here's how it works - you go to a hub where you get on one of these pods (or you can call for one); use a touch screen to denote your destination; then sit back as you're taken non stop along a guide way that uses lasers installed in the vehicles to move it along.
Each pod seats four passengers, and is perfect for groups of people traveling to the same place. An additional feature is security - no shari
Continental Airlines o

Hundreds of climate demonstrators set up a tent camp next to London's Heathrow airport on Monday and threatened "direct action" at the world's busiest air hub to protest against global warming. Police with batons were on alert at the field where the camp is based, within one kilometer of the airport complex. The campaigners plan a week of activities they say will culminate on Sunday in 24 hours of "direct action" in a bid to force the government to halt the planned expansion of the airport, which they argue will exacerbate climate change.

Permission has recently been granted by the local government to give the Heathrow Airport in London, England a £1.5 billion “green” make-over.
Plans include introducing making the building more energy efficient and introducing more recycled and renewable materials, transportation and energies to the terminals.
“I’m very pleased we’ve been able to agree a plan that puts energy efficiency and renewables at the heart of plans for a new Heathrow terminal, and that we’ve secured a commitment to address the energy demand of the airport as a whole,” Londonmayor Ken Livingstone said.
“The challenges associated with climate change will define how our city develops in the coming decades and, as the gateway between our city and the world, it is right that Heathrow airport leads the way in meeting those challenges.”
Phase one of the project — and the completion of the newest terminal, Heathrow East, is expected to be done by the 2012 Ol
Today’s Travel Daily reports that the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow is due to open one year today. Incredibly the project is on schedule and on budget. There will be a 6 month trial of terminal prior to the official opening. Sixteen thousand passenger “guineau pigs” will test every aspect of the terminal experience so that any glitches can be ironed out.
Wearing his other hat as a Board member of the GoSkills council, Dial-a-Cab Chairman Brian Rice recently accepted an invitation to take an early look at Heathrow's new Terminal 5 along with Peter Huntington, the GoSkills Chief Executive. Brian told Call Sign: "GoSkills thought I'd be a good representative to view the new terminal 5 because of my obvious links with licensed taxi drivers, a trade that work there regularly."
No one else from the taxi trade was invited - although Steve Wright, Chairman of the Private Hire Car Association and a GoSkills Stakeholder also accepted the invitation. Brian went on to say that the official opening is scheduled for March 2008, with current estimates claiming the new terminal will be able to handle around 30million passengers a year and size-wise, could hold 50 theoretical full-sized football pitches! It has a length of 400 metres, width of 200 metres and a plunged depth of 20 metres into the ground. The completed building will
Pity the poor U.K. motorist. On top of new "gas guzzler" showroom taxes, higher sky-high taxes on gas and diesel, 17.5 percent VAT on everything car-related (soon to include car insurance), increased CO2-based London congestion charging, the introduction of CO2-based parking space taxes and the ongoing prospect of road pricing (and all the other taxes), Heathrow Airport is considering imposing a £20 "drop off" fee for passengers arriving by car. Oh, and a £3 congestion charge for trucks using roads around the airport-- including the M4. According to The Evening Standard, The British Airports Authority's (BAA) new taxes charges would raise £137m a year, which they'd use to pay for the costs of administering the scheme. Just kidding (kind of). BAA would
