While site-seeing over at C&D, I read some news that really made my day!!! HEATHERETTE has teamed up with MAC Cosmetics to create their own line!!!!!!! I had the pleasure of meeting Richie Rich (ON THE LEFT) of Heatherette back in 2003 during LA Fashion Week and my friends and I had a chance to chill backstage briefly before the show started and then kick it at the Heatherette Afterparty!!! Richie Rich is a big ol' ball of energy- flamboyant doesn't even BEGIN to describe him!!!! I'm so happy to see how Heatherette has evolved from their "Hello Kitty" days. Richie Rich and Traver Rains, the designers behind Heatherette brought their funky all-American road trip from New York to L.A. Fashion Week, putting on "Route 66: California or Bust," a whimsical collection of bedazzled Speedo-style swim trunks, dresses dripping with lace, sequins and fringe and swingy skirts in bold graphic prints.Men's swimwear was skimpier. Tattooed models smeared with black paint sported tiny trunks adorned with sequins, appliques and beaded fringe. Men's shirts also got the sequin-and-fringe treatment..Dresses were silky and swingy in green graphic prints and purple Pucci-esque swirls.Gowns were slim-fitting and super-embellished. Each corset-inspired creation sported an assortment of lace, beads, sequins, appliques or fringe.Then there were dresses that were just plain playful, like the empire-waist lace gown lifted by impossible layers of tulle and a hoop-skirt dress that supported half a dozen satin beach balls.Photo Source

Heatherette 2007 Spring Fashion Show (source)To me, the Heatherette show reminds me of a few things:1) The Heatherette boys went crazy with the Barbie clothing weaving looms. Remember those kits you could get that had the pink circular looms, and you could create sparkly knit leggings for your Barbie dolls? Yeah, that's what this line reminds me of, but add some hot glue gunned buttons and accessories from the craft store, circa 1989.2) This season, "Gaudy" is the new Boho-chic: Gold lame puff jackets? Unnecessary chest harnesses? Fur in surprising places? Elvis' long lost poncho? Yes please!3) Elizabeth Taylor's closet vomited.Isn't fashion week grand? In all honesty, I was disappointed by Heatherette's total lack of imagination in their new line...there isn't one wearable item that you could just throw on with a pair of jeans and have your best friend covet. I have to admit, one of the primary reasons I got into fashion was Heatherette. It was my rebellious nature coming out. I didn't want to be a fiend for the typical designers like Louis Vuitton or Chanel, though now I do love them. But I digress, Heatherette was and still is the off beat and sort of kooky label that completely mocks everything the "fashion world" is supposed to be. Even to this day, people wonder why Richie and Traver still get to show at Bryant Park, but the truth is people love Heatherette not for the wearablility (totally made that up) of the clothes, but for the show. It's sort of like going to a Panic! at the Disco show, who cares if they only have 13 songs and Brendon squeks sometimes, the concert was great because it was a spectacle.
