      Japan's Heat Wave
When you're pregnant your body temperature increases and so a mere 34C day feels like a 40C day. Never mind that you are usually carrying around quite a few extra pounds - 16 in my case.Since rainy season officially ended last Wednesday I have been housebound trying to avoid the brutal sun and just keep rested. This seems like the hottest summer I have ever lived through in my life! Next pregna

      heat wave, some news, thoughts
Sitting listening to Kraftwerk's neon lights with just enough air conditioning to make the sweat rivulets calm. Unbearable heat wave here. Some places were over 100 early this morning. Happy to report that "nothing at all (here)" found a home in an upcoming show...even though it is a blog of absence as presence it is deeply personal and a lot of emotion is in it as well as time for a sort

      Heat Wave...
My mom is leaving her 60 degree weather to come visit us next week...Did I tell you it's warmed up here mom? A warm 20 degrees!! I tell you this now because you've already purchased your ticket... no backing out. Heh.**********************************No school today. I have come to depend on Malachi and Josiah getting a break from each other. This week has been hard. Monday and Tuesday Malachi stayed home because of croup, so they only had two half days of separation. Malachi and Josiah are separated in age by a mere year and a half. They want to do the same things, play with the same toy, they are fiercely competitive even when coloring. I have found they really do NEED a break from one another. They have squabbled over something at least a dozen times already this morning. It

Why I (Heart) SF - A Heat Wave in November
What the hell is a heat wave doing in San Francisco in November? Well, maybe it’s not a heat wave per se, but it’s no doubt at least a warmth wave! I mean, I vaguely remember playing in a kiddie pool back in “winter” of 1980 (and maybe there’s even a photo in the old family album, but I’m not about to post it publicly… even if I was an adorable kid!), but jeesh… I like the fact that fall weather here feels like fall weather… And that I don’t have to dig out “summer clothes” this time of year. I mean , I’m a San Franciscan! (Which by the way means that I get to complain about the weather anytime it’s not a perfect 72 degrees with a hint of a breeze at the perfect moment.) Really, I don’t even own summer clothes! So this unusually warm “fall” weather has me discombobulated. Do I bring a jacket or not? And what exactly is going on here? Is it global warming? Or is it ju

Elderly in Jeopardy During Heat Wave
By: Alice EndySummer heat waves pose a very real danger to the eldely. Normally, our body controls and regulates elevated temperature by allowing heat loss through the skin and by evaporation. As we age, our ability to control the body's temperature is diminished. Aging causes a decrease in the body's ability to adjust to heat and to sense temperature extremes. The elderly are more susceptible to heat relateddisorders and react to sudden changes in temperaturesby loosing the ability to cool down. Those with the following chronic health conditionsare at greater risk: Heart Disease,Kidney Disease, Lung Disease,Obesity, and Diabetes.Certain medications interfere with the body's ability to control temperature. Medications can inhibit the ability to perspire or may increase electrolyte loss.Heat Wave: Temperatures greater than 90 degrees for more than 48 hours and humidity of 80% or greater.Heat Cramps: Muscle pain and cramps caused by loss of water and salt from over exertion. Weathering the Heat Wave
It's fine for tomato ripening, but a little too hot for me. We are seeing temperatures of 89 to 90 in October this year- I sure hope this isn't our Indian Summer! Funny how I feel all lazy when it is this sort of midsummer weather, and how a brisk normal October day can be so invigorating. I just need to shake off my habitual response and remind myself of the time and the short season to finish up garden chores.Haven't seen any of the usual fresh cider yet. Plenty of 'pasteurized', which changes the flavor; but nothing of the good old fashioned kind. But then it was a bad year for the local apple crop due to that late frost we had this spring. More of the fields lay bare and the harvesting, while still underway, is winding down. A farmwoman I know said the corn crop was good if the area got rain, not so good in places where rain was scarce. It was patchy this summer, with my own area getting sufficient rain for decent crop production. The farmstands are still selling sweet corn, b

      It's a ...HEAT WAVE!!
This is usually a 28 student day. Today I had 7. Starting next week though the students are returning and regular classes will resume. I chill in Hawaii so I don't need this down time. I'm ready to start stressin' on some little minds and get them a level 3 black belt in English conversation.

      Heat wave to slap Vietnam
A heat wave threatens to accompany droughts and spark epidemics in Vietnam until September, experts say. Localities in the northern-lowlands, northern-central provinces and the west-Central Highlands region will be hardest hit by the hot spell, which might bring water shortages and human and cattle disease outbreaks, the Hydrometallurgy Research Institute said. However, the heat will also be accompanied by heavy rains in all other areas of the country through October, according to the institute. Severe hot spells have already hurt the central region, triggering in several forest fires and prolonged droughts in Nghe An province, where rivers and lakes have dried up, causing a serious shortage of water.

the view from my window: heat wave
Hot weather has finally reached us after the longest, dreariest fall-winter-spring in memory. Temperatures are in the late 30s C with no wind, which is practically unheard of on this island in the Pacific. I happen to love hot weather, so you won't hear me complaining. This is the kind of weather I live for. Here's a shot of my living room taken at about 8 am yesterday. That's the calm Juan de Fuca Strait with the Olympic mountains in the distance. I'm facing southeast, towards Seattle. Can you spot the cat sleeping in her condo? The cats are constantly flopping themselves down lately, pooped from the heat. It's quite adorable.

      Heat Wave
And so it came to pass that a fireball would beat down from the heavens scorching New York City as it had be prophesied by the channel 7 news weatherman, causing the protein bars in my pantry to soften and creating a subconscious fear that my laptop may melt in my apartment like a VHS tape* in a parked car. On an un-airconditioned downtown no. 1 train yesterday I was fanning myself with the latest edition of amNY featuring a cover article entitled "Scorcher! City braces for first heat wave," and this morning I awoke from the damp swamp that is my bed to catch a morning spinning class at the gym and discovered that it was already 80 degrees at 5:30 a.m.*Definition and description of VHS tape is available on Wikipedia

      Emergency Preparedness on Heat Wave
As promised on the previous article, this post will describe some emergency preparedness during heat wave. So what basically we should do if heat wave is on the run when someone needs immediate attention like heat strokes? Of course we know that heat stroke is a life threatening one. But we can do for relief or help as much as possible before everything goes under normal control? Call emergency number in your area like 911. Don’t panic otherwise others will just panic like you. Try to bring the person under heat stroke into some cool place. Keep the body cool by rubbing or wrapping some wet sheets or clothing. Check breathing and pulse for some problems during the period of attack. Keep the person cool and lying until the emergency team arrives. Heat exhaustion is another thing that can happen to a person during heat wave. When this happens let the person lie down and cool it by rubbing or wrapping with a wet sheet or clothing. Call for medical officers while giving the first ai

How to deal with heat wave
How to deal with heat wave? At our last post on this blog, i have mentioned at the last part on an article on how to deal with heat wave, actions to do during heat wave and how we can survive on the killer heat wave. There are lots of things or actions we could do during heat wave. If it happens, better be safe. One of the important thing is to keep calm. Being calm will keep you active and take decisions wisely. This will not create anymore problem unlike you will try to do some strenuous activity. Another thing you could do is stay indoor most of the time. This at least will not directly heat your body with some hazards and heat caused by heat wave. Keeping your body cool at the times is a good way. Drinking plenty of water is a very good way. This cools your body and refresh your mind. Water is the best liquid to take during this heat wave scenario. Try not to drink alcoholic liquids or caffeinated liquids. These can contribute to the heat on your body, which in turns can add to the

what to fear on heat wave?
What to fear on heat wave? First lets define heat wave. Heat wave is a phenomenon where excessive heat and humidity stays for a long time.  This also varies from different locations all over the globe. That the normal temperature for a certain place will be abnormal in other places based on their temperature patterns beyond normal conditions. We're Having A Heat Wave
It is 17 degrees F. here in Ohio right now. After more than a week of sub-zero temps with the wind chill factor taking those temperatures to -25 to -30 degrees F. this feels almost like spring. It is sunny and the winds are fairly calm. The grand kids have been loving it, as school was cancelled or had delays because of the frigid cold every day this week. It took Winter a long time to get to
