It's that time of year again, when temperatures drop and ice and snow become the norm. Here are some of the most common winter driving hazards and cautions with tips on how to avoid or prepare for them.Be PreparedBefore winter is in full swing, it's important to take steps to insure that your vehicle is properly prepared. This includes checking your battery, windshield wipers, tires, coolant, windshield wiper fluid, spare tire, heater, defroster, any element that you were experiencing problems with and checking for any leaks. If your vehicle is in need of a tuneup or oil change, get these things done before winter hits. If you live in a region that gets alot of rain or snow, then consider getting special tires for these conditions. Also keep a set of tire chains with you at all times.Getti
On the Anchorage Daily News site this morning, I pulled up the very sad story of 24-year old Stephen Cavanaugh, who survived 300 missions in Iraq and then was killed back home when his Camaro hit a cow moose. At the top of the page, the banner ad was promoting the newspaper’s 2008 moose calendar! If it wasn’t just a random hit in the ad rotation, that might be the worst example of poor-taste advertising I’ve ever seen (click on the image below to see a screen shot of the page I saw).
It seems like every time you turn around someone is telling pregnant women to avoid something. Unfortunately food preparation is included in the list of cautions. However, with a few simple rules you can have a carefree and safe pregnancy. Most pregnant women know that they are to avoid or minimize things that have little or no nutritional value, like caffeine, sweets, processed foods, etc.. However, there are some things that also need to be watched for in general:SalmonellaThis is usually traceable to eggs and chicken meat. This means no more licking the cake batter spoon! You should always ensure that your eggs and meats are cooked thoroughly. When using a cutting board for chicken be sure to wash it prior to using it for another food, particularly things like raw vegetables.Symptoms can include: headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, shivering or fever. Usually symptoms occur within 12-48 hours after infection and lasts about 2-3 days. Only if it is severe will treatment usuall

my moment of plastic panic came a few months ago. As a science writer, I've spent the past several years following the steady stream of research into the disturbing effects of the chemicals that leach into our bodies from everyday plastic objects. I'd managed to stay pretty calm about these unsettling discoveries, but then I went to yet another presentation where renowned scientists described new, peer-reviewed findings on how plastic's ingredients may cause reproductive abnormalities and obesity. Afterward, I huddled with the other journalists present, brimming with uneasy questions: Does this mean we should ditch our refillable plastic water bottles? Is it safe for our kids to chew on plastic toys? Should we try to go completely plastic free?

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and China Petroleum and Chemicals Corporation (Sinopec), the two major state oil companies have rejected the governmental program on forcing oil firms to buy 'environmental pollution insurance'.The two companies said that they can handle issues of environmental compensation themselves and that the scale of compensation paid out in the oil industry is too high for China's insurance firms to bear, the China Business News reported. The insurance scheme is currently being drawn up by the State Environmental Protection Administration and the China Insurance Regulatory Commission. An editorial in China Business View today criticized the two companies, saying that CNPC had proved itself incapable of dealing with issues of compensation. Thus, in 2005 an explosion at a CNPC petrochemical facility sent a highly poisonous slick of benzene along the Songhua River, threatening the water supplies of several million people. In 2006 40 victims of the blast h

A joint meeting of two ethics committees for the Centers for Disease Control has received a detailed formal complaint alleging a series of unethical activities by the CDC Oral Health Division and the CDC Director. The complaint points to a quote by a highly placed CDC official that the public health ethics code CDC espouses is not being internally applied within CDC itself. The complaint specifically questions why CDC's own data on disproportionate harm from ingested fluoride in minority groups is not being communicated to these communities, and points to new, state of the art National Research Council information showing certain groups to be especially susceptible to harm from fluoride.

Title : Electrostatic HazardsAuthor: Günter Luttgens, Norman WilsonPublisher: Butterworth-HeinemannISBN: 0750627824In the US, UK and Europe there is in excess of one notifiable dust or electrostatic explosion every day of the year. This clearly makes the hazards associated with the handling of materials subject to either cause or react to electrostatic discharge of vital importance to anyone associated with their handling or industrial bulk use. This book provides a comprehensive guide to the dangers of static electricity and how to avoid them. It will prove invaluable to safety managers and professionals, as well as all personnel involved in the activities concerned, in the chemical, agricultural, pharmaceutical and petrochemical process industries. The book makes extended use of case studies to illustrate the principles being expounded, thereby making it far more open, accessible and attractive to the practitioner in industry than the highly theoretical texts which are also available
Space Radiation Hazards and the Vision for Space Exploration: Report of a Workshop
Natl Academy Pr | ISBN 0309102642 | 2006-10-30 | 91 pages
Fulfilling the President s Vision for Space Exploration (VSE) will require overcoming many challenges. Among these are the hazards of space radiation to crews traveling to the Moon and Mars. To explore these challenges in some depth and to examine ways to marshal research efforts to address them, NASA, NSF, and the NRC sponsored a workshop bringing together members of the space and planetary science, radiation physics, operations, and exploration engineering communities. The goals of the workshop were to increase understanding of the solar and space physics in the environment of Earth, the Moon, and Mars; to identify compelling relevant research goals; and discuss directions this research should take over the coming decade. This workshop report presents a discussion of radiation risks for the VSE, an assessment of specifying and predicting the
From what I’ve read about Army Reservist Sergeant Erik Botta, I probably would not be on the same side of the fence politically. Just an assumption. However, I would think that at least most would agree, left or right or straddling said fence, that it is just wrong that the government would actually use the statement “to assure a sharing of exposure to the hazards of combat” to justify his fifth deployment.
The 26-year old has been to Afghanistan once, and to Iraq three times, and was then granted an exemption by the government, after his service, to pursue an engineering degree to work as a senior engineer on Blackhawk and Seahawk helicopters.
Exemption then denied. I guess he simply hasn’t been exposed to enough hazards of combat. Because, out of the blue, here comes notice that he will be re-deployed. For the fifth time, to assure a sharing of exposure to the hazards of combat.
I know I’ve repeated that quote ad nauseum in this particular column. It&rsq

I like the Millenium Clock, one of the dominating features of the atrium. Just before 11.00 I saw a North American guy taking photos of the clock and I suggested that he wait until 11:00 when the clock would grind into action. However he was with a tour and they were departing at 11.00. I think it is a pity to be in such an interesting museum, with little opportunity to return soon and to have to depart at a specific time.
The clock has several sections, the crypt, at the base, the nave, the belfry and the spire. At 11:00 the Egyptian monkey in the crypt started turning a wheel, which then set various cogs in the nave into motion making the 12 figures in the bel

When leaving your cat or cat’s home alone indoors for any period of time, take care to remove any potential hazards. Be sure to keep cupboards closed as they may house hazardous substances, particulary in the kitchen, and block off all chimneys. And also so as not to cause a temptation as playthings, any electrical cords should be starightened up and secured. You may also want to free up a couple of decent sized surfaces of any knicknacks to be available as resting places for the cat. Be sure to shake out any bedding material every day.

Use of cocaine in a binge, during which the drug is taken repeatedly and at increasingly high doses, may lead to a state of increasing irritability, restlessness, and paranoia. This can result in a period of full-blown paranoid psychosis, in which the user loses touch with reality and experiences auditory hallucinations.Other complications associated with cocaine use include disturbances in heart rhythm and heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory failure, strokes, seizures and headaches, and gastrointestinal complications such as abdominal pain and nausea. Because cocaine has a tendency to decrease appetite, many chronic users can become malnourished.Different means of taking cocaine can produce different adverse effects. Regularly snorting cocaine, for example, can lead to loss of the sense of smell, nosebleeds, problems with swallowing, hoarseness, and a chronically runny nose. Ingesting cocaine can cause severe bowel gangrene due to reduced blood flow. People who inject cocaine ca
Cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant that interferes with the reabsorption process of dopamine, a chemical messenger associated with pleasure and movement. The buildup of dopamine causes continuous stimulation of receiving neurons, which is associated with the euphoria commonly reported by cocaine abusers.Physical effects of cocaine use include constricted blood vessels, dilated pupils, and increased temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. The duration of cocaine’s immediate euphoric effects, which include hyperstimulation, reduced fatigue, and mental alertness, depends on the route of administration. The faster the absorption of the drug, the more intense the high. On the other hand, the faster the absorption, the shorter the duration of action. The high from snorting may last 15 to 30 minutes, while that from smoking may last 5 to 10 minutes. Increased use can reduce the period of time a user feels high and increases the risk of addiction. Some users of cocaine
