Green Chemistry and Chemicals Policy: Addressing Occupational Hazards
The field of green chemistry focuses on the design, manufacture and use of chemicals, products and processes to reduce or eliminate adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. Advancements in the field will support businesses and industries, as well as communities, workers and public agencies in their efforts to minimize the use of toxic chemicals in industrial processes and products. Advancements in green chemistry practices can also open new opportunities for green collar jobs, while at the same time ensuring that these new jobs are also safer jobs. In addition to presenting the findings of our recent report to California EPA, Green Chemistry: Cornerstone to a Sustainable California (), we will address the following topics: Long-standing weaknesses in federal policy that

Amorous clients just one of the job hazards
April 19, 2008 Amorous clients just one of the job hazards From botched deals to indecent proposals, agents take it in their stride By Tan Hui Yee IN APRIL last year, housing agent Serene Chua, 26, received a call from someone wanting to sell his flat in Chinatown. They arranged to meet at his block, but he would not give her a specific unit number. When she arrived at the stairwell, a man started punching her and grabbed her handbag. She was too stunned to cry out, but fled fast enough to escape further harm. The year before, a Boon Lay home owner, whose flat was on the market, often asked her to 'go shopping' with him, which she declined. But during one discussion at his flat, he suddenly grabbed her hand and kissed it. She left immediately, but he kept up with his SMS propositions for

For Ryan Church, Concussion Reveals Baseball’s Hazards

It's regarding Ryan Church and his reaction after his first game since the concussion.“Heard you played yesterday, Churchie,” Marlon Anderson said. “How’d you do?”Smiling, Church said: “Two for two. Two line-drive singles.”“I locked you in,” Anderson said. Church shook his head. “No, never again,” he said. While converging on a pop-up in shallow right field on March 1, Church and Anderson slammed into each other, a ghastly collision that left Church in far worse shape. The Hazards of Rotating Ads
On the Anchorage Daily News site this morning, I pulled up the very sad story of 24-year old Stephen Cavanaugh, who survived 300 missions in Iraq and then was killed back home when his Camaro hit a cow moose. At the top of the page, the banner ad was promoting the newspaper’s 2008 moose calendar! If it wasn’t just a random hit in the ad rotation, that might be the worst example of poor-taste advertising I’ve ever seen (click on the image below to see a screen shot of the page I saw).

      Avoiding Food Hazards in Pregnancy
It seems like every time you turn around someone is telling pregnant women to avoid something. Unfortunately food preparation is included in the list of cautions. However, with a few simple rules you can have a carefree and safe pregnancy. Most pregnant women know that they are to avoid or minimize things that have little or no nutritional value, like caffeine, sweets, processed foods, etc.. However, there are some things that also need to be watched for in general:SalmonellaThis is usually traceable to eggs and chicken meat. This means no more licking the cake batter spoon! You should always ensure that your eggs and meats are cooked thoroughly. When using a cutting board for chicken be sure to wash it prior to using it for another food, particularly things like raw vegetables.Symptoms can include: headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, shivering or fever. Usually symptoms occur within 12-48 hours after infection and lasts about 2-3 days. Only if it is severe will treatment usuall

Hazards For Abuse Survivors Both Timid and Bold
Many of our witnesses come from many countries and cultures. Alike, they testify to young male sexual and other abuses by Sathya Sai Baba, and the cover up by his core leaders in the International Sathya Sai Organization. Many are afraid to speak out. This is a common feature of sexual abuse survivors, and Sai Baba’s proxy defenders on the Internet and elsewhere make the most of this difficulty. They say there have been no prosecutions of Sai Baba. Yet it often takes years or decades before survivors can come to terms with what happened to them.   Hazards Of Brave Abuse Survivors   Even those few ready to face the public with the facts can often be in no position to litigate. This is because of lack of funds, time, energy, or family or close friends to support them in an intelligent and genuine manner. Evidence of Plastic's Health Hazards Mount -- Is it Time to Kick the Habit?
my moment of plastic panic came a few months ago. As a science writer, I've spent the past several years following the steady stream of research into the disturbing effects of the chemicals that leach into our bodies from everyday plastic objects. I'd managed to stay pretty calm about these unsettling discoveries, but then I went to yet another presentation where renowned scientists described new, peer-reviewed findings on how plastic's ingredients may cause reproductive abnormalities and obesity. Afterward, I huddled with the other journalists present, brimming with uneasy questions: Does this mean we should ditch our refillable plastic water bottles? Is it safe for our kids to chew on plastic toys? Should we try to go completely plastic free?  Sources: Mother Jones October 1, 2007

The complaint points to a quote by a highly placed CDC official that the public health ethics code CDC espouses is not being internally applied within CDC itself. The complaint specifically questions why CDC's own data on disproportionate harm from ingested fluoride in minority groups is not being communicated to these communities, and points to new, state of the art National Research Council information showing certain groups to be especially susceptible to harm from fluoride. Exposure to the Hazards of Combat
From what I’ve read about Army Reservist Sergeant Erik Botta, I probably would not be on the same side of the fence politically. Just an assumption. However, I would think that at least most would agree, left or right or straddling said fence, that it is just wrong that the government would actually use the statement “to assure a sharing of exposure to the hazards of combat” to justify his fifth deployment. The 26-year old has been to Afghanistan once, and to Iraq three times, and was then granted an exemption by the government, after his service, to pursue an engineering degree to work as a senior engineer on Blackhawk and Seahawk helicopters. Exemption then denied. I guess he simply hasn’t been exposed to enough hazards of combat. Because, out of the blue, here comes notice that he will be re-deployed. For the fifth time, to assure a sharing of exposure to the hazards of combat. I know I’ve repeated that quote ad nauseum in this particular column. It&rsq

Millenium Clock and the hazards of being on a tour
I visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh earlier this week. I was there  for an hour and a half, in keeping with my resolve to visit museums and galleries more frequently but for shorter periods, rather than being there for hours and not able to take it all in. The Atrium with the Millenium Clock at the rear I like the Millenium Clock, one of the dominating features of the atrium. Just before 11.00 I saw a North American guy taking photos of the clock and I suggested that he wait until 11:00 when the clock would grind into action. However he was with a tour and they were departing at 11.00. I think it is a pity to be in such an interesting museum, with little opportunity to return soon and to have to depart at a specific time. The clock has several sections, the crypt, at the base, the nave, the belfry and the spire. At 11:00 the Egyptian monkey in the crypt started turning a wheel, which then set various cogs in the nave into motion making the 12 figures in the bel

As you can also see from the picture, I’m already standing yet the handy-dandy Raggedy Ann & Andy mobile has not been taken down.  I’m also in arm’s reach of wodden wall art which I could have taken off the wall and beat myself about the head and neck with.  I could have then taken the nail from the wall from which the art had been hanging and pierced myself.  Then I could have grabbed that air freshener and eaten it.  Then, if I was feeling quite spry, I could have grabbed that curtain and used it to either rappel down the side of the crib or else strangle myself. And because I’m typing this from my Durham, NC home and not from Heaven, Sto-vo-kor, or some other place, I am obviously still alive. By contemporary standards of baby safety, I should hav

Health Hazards of Cocaine - 2
Use of cocaine in a binge, during which the drug is taken repeatedly and at increasingly high doses, may lead to a state of increasing irritability, restlessness, and paranoia. This can result in a period of full-blown paranoid psychosis, in which the user loses touch with reality and experiences auditory hallucinations.Other complications associated with cocaine use include disturbances in heart rhythm and heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory failure, strokes, seizures and headaches, and gastrointestinal complications such as abdominal pain and nausea. Because cocaine has a tendency to decrease appetite, many chronic users can become malnourished.Different means of taking cocaine can produce different adverse effects. Regularly snorting cocaine, for example, can lead to loss of the sense of smell, nosebleeds, problems with swallowing, hoarseness, and a chronically runny nose. Ingesting cocaine can cause severe bowel gangrene due to reduced blood flow. People who inject cocaine ca

Health Hazards of Cocaine - 1
Cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant that interferes with the reabsorption process of dopamine, a chemical messenger associated with pleasure and movement. The buildup of dopamine causes continuous stimulation of receiving neurons, which is associated with the euphoria commonly reported by cocaine abusers.Physical effects of cocaine use include constricted blood vessels, dilated pupils, and increased temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. The duration of cocaine’s immediate euphoric effects, which include hyperstimulation, reduced fatigue, and mental alertness, depends on the route of administration. The faster the absorption of the drug, the more intense the high. On the other hand, the faster the absorption, the shorter the duration of action. The high from snorting may last 15 to 30 minutes, while that from smoking may last 5 to 10 minutes. Increased use can reduce the period of time a user feels high and increases the risk of addiction. Some users of cocaine

She loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso, decided to taste the mulch since it smelled good. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, the lady woke up and took Calypso out for her regular morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Actually, this product is HIGHLY toxic for dogs.Cocoa Mulch: This material used in planter beds is made from cocoa bean hulls, which contain potentia
