What's Haute and the Independent Handbag Designer Awards
What's Haute is a friend to Handbag Designer 101 so I was honored to join the preliminary judging panel for the 2nd Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards. Over 600 photos were submitted and I, along with Handbag Designer 101 founder Emily Blumenthal and several others, pored through all of them to select five finalists in each of the following categories:Best Green Handbag, Best Handbag in Overall Style and Design, Best Handmade Handbag, Best Student-Made Handbag, and Most Socially Responsible Handbag. It was difficult to choose since the quality of the bags was incredible, and the talent in the handbag world is simply amazing! But here's a look at a few of my faves who were picked to be finalists (their bags are pictured above)Nelle Handbags: I fell in love with her adorable black ruf

Pucci designer Matthew Williamson took inspiration from the Navajo to create a collection of bohemian chic pieces - printed dresses, billowing ponchos and caftans, woven swimsuits, feathered coats and easy, breezy separates in Western-style prints and solids with a primary color palette of maize, brown, yellow, and gold coupled with hot pink, peach and blue. While the collection itself was somewhat of a stretch - as Williamson strayed away from traditional Pucci-style and added more 'ambitious', more signature designs, the handbag collection was extremely un-Pucci. Styles were derived from the 70's and 80's - leather patchwork, color blocks, Native American beading, and chevron stripes. The entire handbag collection looked dated and cheap, and seemed more like they were created for an old-school costume party rather than for a modern, ready-to-wear Spring collection.Source: Style.com

Haute Off the Runway - Olga Kapustina
Indie designer Olga Kapustina transformed swimwear into ready-to-wear with her Spring 2008 collection. Pieces consisted of solid bright color blocks, and silhouettes were bathing-suit inspired, with bandeau-style tops, form fitting bodices, and full skirts reminiscent of bikini bottom skirts. Models wore matching fabrics on their head, to resemble swim caps.Check out more of the collection here

Haute Off the Runway: Cynthia Steffe
Cynthia Steffe's Spring '08 collection was a ready-to-wear dream - full of tons of pieces that could easily be worn off the runway as well as on. The collection featured bright spring colors and crisp neutrals mixed with the mod-style color blocks and prints. Solid pieces were constructed in eye-popping colors that are very versatile and beautiful for spring. 60's-inspired mod looks consisted of geometric shapes and prints in neutral, pastel and primary colors.Photos via NY Mag

Haute off the Runway - Reem Acra
Fashion Week is quickly coming to a close but I've been attending tons of shows and am hastily writing to bring you updates on what's haute for Spring 2008!Acra's ultra-feminine frocks were glossed up with bright colors and shiny fabrics. Her Spring collection primarily consisted of dresses and separates, in hues of canary yellow, emerald green, and bright purple. Eye-catching color combinations were the theme - green and yellow punched up with purple; red and white floral printed dresses with wide colored belts; shimmering gowns. Nearly every piece in the collection was accessorized with a belt, with the exception of the gowns. Gowns were red carpet ready, with form fitting bodices, plunging beaded necklines, and voluminous skirts. The gowns were less ostentatious in terms of color - the designer stuck to off white, lavender and black.Overall, the collection was a beautiful array of flowing, colorful dresses, not for every day, but for the woman with somewhere to go. I expect to se

Haute New Designer: Shauna Luther - SML Bags
One of the many rewards of reading Bagfetish Unleashed! is that we at Bagfetish Unleashed (unlike other Bag Blogs), instead of just writing about the 'It Brands' and bringing you bags hot off the runways, we're constantly on the lookout to for the more obscure or new designers and their collections to introduce to our loyal readers. Today is such an occassion. Last week we featured Freddy & Ma. This week, Meet Haute New Designer, Shauna Luther, designer of SML Bags, based in Brooklyn, NY. All her bags are made by Shauna's own hand!Though her bags come in different styles, they all have that distinctive, trademark Saddle-shaped foldover top. Also, all Shauna Luther's bags are Bespoke (read: personalised and made-to-order), yup, so like designers Freddy & Ma that we featured a couple of weeks ago, just choose your fabrics, leather and even floral appliqués if you want, and you have a bag that's distinctively and uniquely yours!First up, the 'Goldie'$110Made of leather, this P

      Kristen Lee's Haute Hobo
I prefer satin as a great material for evening bags and cool clutches but never really imagine it as the material of choice for something larger. But this satin hobo by Kristen Lee ($297) looks totally practical and, is, in Shopbop's words, "utterly beautiful". Kristen Lee Handbags Satin HoboA super-sized "V"-shaped slouchy hobo gets a makeover with luxurious yellow satin, with double rolled handles, top ruching, and a snap closure. It's a bright, bold, color that will add punch to your Fall wardrobe - pair it up with neutrals like browns, blacks and greys for an unexpected color rush. It also doubles as a day bag or oversized evening tote.

Haute or Not - Juicy Couture Georgia Patchwork Hobo
Juicy Couture bags have come a long way since terry cloth companions to the once ubiquitous sweatsuits. Lately, they've been much more toned down - simple leather satchels, hobos and totes, with a few Juicy details, like chains or charms. In my opinion, Juicy bags may never reach 'It' status, but the designs have been good enough to justify a purchase. However, this atrocity, the Georgia Patchwork Hobo, should never be seen in public. At least, not on anyone's arm. This bag represents Juicy at its absolute worst. Brown, tan, cream and black leather pieces are slapped patch-worked together and centered with the ugliest crest I have ever seen. The wrapped shoulder strap has contrasting pieces of cream and tan leather at each end to further the ugly. The price is even more atrocious - $395.What's your take? Haute or not?

Aelisheva Makes Haute Couture Affordable and Beautiful
Since each piece is hand made, it allows the designers to make each one slightly different. “It is a stronger piece that way,” Sanja say via translator. Alyse expands on this: “We have both been doing fashion and visual arts for many years, so at this point it comes out naturally and rapidly on its own. We do many variations on elements from earlier work.” In fact, the designers keep boxes of fabric scraps, bits and pieces of trim, and miscellaneous bits for use in each creation. “I have many pieces of material, which wait to be put in their own place in their own time,” Sanja muses. “I do not know if that is collage or painting, maybe both one and the other.” No piece is this more evident in than the lovely grey and red dress I have here. The bodice is made of a thin, stretchy piece of textured charcoal fabric. The skirt is a darker, complimentary grey in silky-soft velour. Various appliques and bits of trim in red and white offe

      Christian Lacroix Haute Couture
No mínimo, fantástico. CHRISTIAN LACROIX is not a name one associates with austerity. To celebrate his twentieth year on the international fashion stage, many were expecting a technicolour blowout of monumental proportions - yet Lacroix’s genius doesn’t lie in traffic-stopping colour alone (although second onto the runway was, true to form, one multi-coloured, Russian-inspired, corset-style coat that turned every head in the audience). Against a stark white catwalk in a white room at the Palais de Tokyo Modern Art Museum, the sheer elaborate construction of Lacroix’s couture collection,

Haute Couture A/W 07: Christian Dior
As usual, the Dior show was a whimsical, theatrical adventure, that leaves you wanting more! John Galliano really should receive some sort of award, and if his couture designing days ever come to an end he will have no problem getting a job as a costume designer.Anyway, here are my favourite designs from this year's show.Gorgeous. And it's pretty awesome that Amber Valletta (old-school supermodel) is modelling this one.I also love this model. Flavia De Oliveira. She's a rising star, that one.I really like it how this model has a little more curve to her body than the others.Show-stopping.I adore the colour of this absolute masterpiece. It reminds of a snake. A very chic snake, or course. ;-)Unfortunately, this will be the only Haute Couture post this time around. I thought I'd show this collection because it was particularly stunning.Check out the rest of Haute Couture A/W at HarpersBazaar.com.auCatch.*Romany*

Check out We Smoke Fags. They're clearly the best thing to come out of London in a long while - they're music is beautifully electro at the same time as being punk and indie. It's the greatest combination I've heard yet.Check out their songs on MySpace. My favourite is Passion for Fashion - I've even got it as my profile song these days.As you can probably see from the above photo, it's clear they do have a little bit of a passion for fashion - I want his printed top! Haha. It's from House of Holland and next time I'm in London I'm definitely checking it out. I also want their "LOVE ME SOME LOHAN" tee, 'cause I do love me some Lohan. Haha. House of Holland have a couple of tees from their collection on the website, but they're not all there - they have stockists in London, Dubai, New York, Paris, Russia, San Fransisco, Singapore, Tokyo and New Zealand so I'll have to take a trip to one of those places to get me some House of Holland.I was looking into the rights to use the a

As the daughter of a diplomat father, Kroell spent her childhood in Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland, Israel, France and Italy. While Kroell now considers herself to be a New Yorker, her diverse past is effortlessly incorporated into her designs each season. "Very much like New York, I try to take out the essences of all cultures."
