My personal review and some players' thoughts:Do you love to have a farm? :)The premise of Harvest Moon is pretty simple, at first - you are a city kid who happens to wander upon a farmer who decides to pass away his run down farm to you, with one condition, that you make it profitable in an year. At the beginning, after getting introduced to the townsfolk that live right next to the farm, you're set free to do whatever you want with the land you received. Each day consists of a 12 hour shift that roughly takes ten real minutes to pass - in that period, crops have to be planted or watered, cows and chickens have to be tended and eventual visits to town and the outskirts have to be made. Days also have random weather effects, like rain, sun or even snow. These can be previewed at the TV loc

For the next couple weeks only bury food on the side with the fresh bedding. During these two weeks a majority of the worms will move over to the other side where you can harvest the castings minus the worms. The Australian 2008 wine harvest has been upgraded
At almost 50% complete, the 2008 Australian winegrape harvest looks set to deliver between 1.55 and 1.65 million tonnes.Continuing a turn towards supply/demand balance, the revised figure is up on the pre-harvest estimate of 1.22 million tonnes, largely due to improved water allocations and active water trading in the warm inland districts. Nationally, the increase in crush compared to last year is the result of an overall increase in yields combined with a marginal increase in bearing area.

Platanos/PlantainsThis stem of platanos (plantains) would never be considered a good harvest on a professional level but it's fine for us. We can never eat them all before they get ripe and neither of us cares much for ripe ones anyway. We always end up giving most of the bananas and plantains away.Perhaps if we took better care of our plantain and banana trees we would get a better harvest. We never fertilize them and the only water they get is from the rain, unless we've had a really long dry spell. So, I would say that it's not bad for free food. Now that the plant has produced, it will be cut down because it won't produce again.I had great plans to follow the growth of the banana stalk from flower to harvest, but all I have to show for my plans are these two flower photos, taken two da

      Blue Harvest (Family Guy)
"Blue Harvest" was the season premiere of the Sixth season of the FOX series Family Guy, which originally aired on September 23, 2007.The episode was a retelling of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, recasting the show's characters into Star Wars roles.[1] For this purpose, and for the first time in the history of Family Guy, this episode was an hour long (with commercials). It was also made to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise. The name "Blue Harvest" is a reference to the title of the film ruse used to ensure secrecy and disguise the actual 1981 - 1983 production of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. This episode drew 10.7 million viewers, and earned the highest Nielsen rating of any Family Guy episode since the show returned to air in 2005, making it the se

Family Guy - Blue Harvest (1999)
What better way to launch Family Guy's sixth season and commemorate Star Wars' 30th anniversary than with this double-length Very Special Episode, a full-scale, awesomely animated spoof that recasts George Lucas' saga with Family Guy's galaxy of characters: Chris (Seth Green) is Luke; Lois (Alex Borstein) is Princess Leia; Peter (Seth McFarlane) is Han Solo, but not, as expected, Jabba the Hut; Brian (Seth, again) is Chewbacca; Quagmire (and again, Seth) is C3PO; Cleveland is R2D2; Herbert, the creepy senior pedophile, is Obi-Wan (both voiced by Mike Henry); and, of course, Stewie (Seth, already) is Darth Vader ("My diapers have gone over to the dark side"). Poor Meg is reduced to a cameo as the hideous reptilian creature that haunts the garbage compactor. Blue Harvest is reverently faithf

California and Washington Release Upbeat Grape Harvest Numbers
Figures released by the two largest wine grape producing states suggest that 2007 was a good year in the vineyards. The California Department of Food and Agriculture forecast a harvest of 3.2 million tons, up under one percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers reports a record harvest of 127,150 tons, up 5.5 percent. Two-thirds of all wine sold in the U.S. comes from California wineries. A total of 449 million gallons of California wine were sold in the U.S. in 2006 with an estimated retail value of $17.8 billion.

      End of Harvest =Celebration
Friday was the culmination of a season’s worth of late evenings and early mornings. Tons of grapes were driven in, crushed, fermented, and barreled, which meant bins and tanks had to be cleaned, pH levels measured, and a million other tasks. Finally, the big stuff is done, all there is to do now is wait (and rack, continue to run tests, and sample, but you know what I mean). As you may have gathered, at Rosenblum, all hard work is rewarded by hard play. Therefore we all gathered for an End of Harvest lunch. Sid was in charge of the rotisserie-style pig and smoking the salmon, making it quite the affair. Each department was in charge of different courses, including apps and veggies. We had everything from crab dip to spinach salad, from the Filipino dish lumpia to pineapple upside-down cake, extra rum. That’s Chris, our chemist, who can also cook up some tasty red beans and rice. And I had all kinds of fun running around making squash, asparagus, and mustard greens&nda

      Late Harvest?
Guess what! We grow grapes here in Latvia. Of course, most of them are not suitable for making an excellent wine, but some manages to do even that!By the way, Wine Hill in Sabile is the most northern open-air wineyard and it is registered in the Guinness Book of Records.

      Harvest Continues to Roll On
The last harvest update from winemaker John Kane left us with fruit from Sonoma and Mendocino and just a portion of the whites. In his next account from 10.13.07, we had received close to 1000 tons of red fruit and white juice from our offsite custom crush facilities. (Sometimes the grapes must be pressed offsite due to distance or weather conditions.) Speaking of the weather, it hasn’t seemed to be able to make up its mind. With the rain coming and going, there has been some cause for concern over the acid levels. What’s happening is that water is being taken into the roots, which dilutes the acid instead of allowing it to convert to sugar, all leading to issues about the ripeness of the grapes. John gave reference to some technical issues over pH and fermentation, but I’ll just sum it up with his take on trying to get yeast to ferment when the pH levels aren’t what they should be: like “washing barrels in the pouring rain– hostile work environ

      Amish Harvest Soup
Today we spent the day on our fall foliage day trip through Ohio’s Amish country. It’s a short drive for us, about 45 minutes – 1 hour depending on where we go. We started the day at the Simply Smucker’s store in Orrville. It has been expanded to a large showroom. Smucker’s has been on [...]

      Harvest at Twin Vines
Harvest took place at the Twin Vines vineyard yesterday. Rain and cooler weather had conspired to delay things, but the sugar level readings this week indicated that it was indeed time to pick. Twin Vines is about 2 acres, and is planted to 5 red Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. We initially determined the planting proportions for this vineyard by finding the published blend quantities for as many red Bordeaux wines, and as many California Meritage wines as possible, and then finding the average. We ended up with about 50% Cab S. going down to around 5% of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Interestingly, these varieties have differing ripening characteristics, which can prove to be a challenge when it comes to picking (because we want to harvest just once each season). As it stands, harvest went perfectly--the fruit was great, averaging around 26% sugar (or, 26 brix), and we came away with about 3,550 pounds of grapes for our first field blend

Harvest Tasting Menu at Talula's Table
In the wake of the recent glowing write up by Craig LaBan in The Philadelphia Inquirer, the pace at Talula’s Table, already high, quickly accelerated from sixty to ninety. Private dinners at their farmhouse table are booked just about solid all the way into early Spring 2008. And they’re suddenly turning out huge batches of lobster pot pies to fulfill a growing mail order demand. It seems that the combination of decadence and comfort food is quite contagious. In the midst of this controlled chaos, Bryan Sikora, Aimee Olexy, Claire Shears and their dedicated staff are keeping their heads, maintaining a sense of fun, and continuing to produce one of the best all around dining and gourmet market experiences available in the Philadelphia and greater Delaware/Brandywine Valley areas. Witness the focused, subtle yet soulful flavors of their October 2007 tasting menu, a cornucopia of dishes built around the flavors of the fall harvest season in Southeastern Pennsylvania.Venison Carpa

      Keeping Up: Harvest
I was getting ready to post John Kane’s third Harvest installment, when I realized I had never posted the second. (Here is the first, if you missed it.) As of the last week of September, we had received 650 tons of fruit. The fruit that was coming in was looking very clean and evenly ripe. Rare for Zinfandel, which is known for looking like raisins at the bottom of the cluster and perfect at its top. Moving on, barreling down is in full swing. This is the first time we’ll be using puncheon barrels, which hold 500 liters. The 500 l barrels make the wine seem more mature than the normal 220 liter, without adding as much oak influence. They’ll be used for some of the smaller productions. September also brought a new member to the production staff: the Diemme D80 press, brought over from Italy. Having only one press was quite chancey, as it could give at any moment and bring the whole process to a screeching halt. A great direct quote from John about how it fee

Freebie Review 13 - Golden Harvest Chips
Hey All! Shaynon here with another freebie review just for you! Today’s freebie of choice “Golden Harvest Chips.” This offer was posted back on August 3rd and I received mine somewhere towards the end of September. It came in the standard cardboard packaging as all the “can be squished” foods come in. After opening up the package, I found that it contained two samples of the chips. The size of the bag was like what those fun size packs are. One was for the “Tomato Basil” and the other was “Banana.” I just opened the Tomato Basil first and it smells a lot like pizza. The chips are paper thin and very crunchy. Ok, here it goes. Tastes a lot like a pizza combo. Not bad. Eat a few more. Ok, EWW. To me they have a very bad after taste. Almost cardboardish. I thought the idea was to taste like a chip, not the packaging it came in. Enough of these. On to the Banana chips. They smell like bananas, which is a good sign. But as we know from t

Cognac Harvest 25 Percent Below Predictions
Cognac is the most famous brandy in the world and its made from a grape most people have not heard of, the ugni blanc. Disease in the vineyards, including mildew, are cutting this year's harvest of the ugni blanc significantly.Cognac can come from only one small region of France. With demand for Cognac growing, a bad year hurts brands like Martell and Hennessy because they are unable to count on a reliable supply of grapes. The Bureau National Interprofessionel du Cognac says production could be off by 25-30 percent. That will likely cause prices to climb in future years.

I've only been to Martha's Vineyard twice. The first time was for a Kentucky Derby party that a client had. She has a very nice house out there, and I had a wonderful time.
