      799. Latar Belakang Perbedaan Penentuan Hari Raya 'Iyd Al-Fithri

Hari Raya Gathering Sesumojian Batch ‘93
On the day my Pak Lang passed away ( Al- Fatihah ), my ex-schoolmate has arranged a Hari Raya gathering. Normally, we host gatherings in hotels or resorts, however this time..we chose to have it at our former class teacher’s house, Cikgu Puteh (Mrs. White..hehe). Cikgu Puteh was my class teacher for 2 years and she’s been teaching at Sekolah Sultan Mohamad Jiwa for almost 27 years. In fact last year she had won the award as the longest serving teacher. It is quite a difficult situation because I wanted to attend both ceremonies that are scheduled at the same time. Luckily, my friend, Adut, at the gathering informed that most of them are willing to wait for me until that late afternoon. So, I arrived at Cikgu Puteh’s house at Sungai Petani close to 4.00pm. Only Azli @ Adut, Basyir@ Buas, Megat @ Megades, Sofwan @ Mat Puan and the only schoolmate that I have not met since we finished schooling, Khairuddin @ Pak Din Kulop was still there . I thought I was the last person to arrive,

Barisan Nasional folks have their own Hari Raya wishes too?
You know something, folks!Yesterday our brother in arms, Mr. Lim Kit Siang shared his Hari Raya wishes with the whole nation. Luckily he does not wish for too many things. :-) He only has four wishes. Quote:“A low-crime Malaysia where everyone, whether citizen, tourist or investor can feel safe again in the streets, public places and the privacy of the homes and where the fundamental rights to be free from crime and fear of crime are not just empty and meaningful words.Zero tolerance for corruption, abuses of power and financial scandals.Restore national and international confidence in a truly independent judiciary and a just rule of law, which will go a long way to enhance Malaysia’s international competitiveness which has suffered considerable erosion in recent years; andA Malaysian national consciousness and identity transcending racial, religious or political differences.”Good wishes, Mr. Lim!On the other hand, surely those folks over at Barisan Nasional have some Hari Raya w

      Hari Raya

Empire State Building Celebrates Hari Raya Too!
New York’s Empire State Building is to be lit GREEN for the first time ever, in honour of Aidilfitri. “This is the first time that the Empire State Building will be illuminated for Eid, and the lighting will become an annual event in the same tradition of the yearly lightings for Christmas and Hannukah,” according to a statement. [Link to story] I think it’s cool. A skyscraper illuminated green. But the question really would be “Will the lights blink like those in Geylang Serai? And will they sing raya songs from Sudirman and eat satay on Broadway?” Oh wait …. that’s happening in space. (Malaysia boleh!!)

The Skull Cap I Want For Hari Raya!
If I get these for Hari Raya, will I be ridiculed for wearing them? It’s way better than wearing a stupid songkok that’s two feet high with that stupid ‘Pingat Bakti Masyarakat’ whateveryoucallit pinned on it. I think these skull caps will go great with a purple polka-dotted ‘baju melayu’ and some old ’skool Converse sneakers. Bah!!!!

      My Hari Raya So Far
I’ve enjoyed myself during this year’s festive season. Especially this weekend when I was allowed to eat and drink almost whatever I wanted. I had kuehs, cookies, chips, kerepeks, cakes, but best of all I had all kinds of fizzy drinks, especially Coke. We didn’t go to a lot of houses, but I really enjoyed travelling all over the place and seeing all those cars on the road. Ayeed missed everything because each time he was in the car or taxi, he fell asleep. On Saturday I went to Atuk’s and Nenek’s place in Clementi. It’s been a long while since I’ve been there, but I wasted little time in messing up the living room. Uncle Ruzaini had kindly brought out lots of toys and books for me to play with and read, and I had them all to myself. Ayeed was busy being cranky and drinking lots of milk and sleeping. He should stay awake more so that he can enjoy the atmosphere around him. It was pretty much the same thing today. Some of Mummy’s best fri

Hari Raya - A Photo Essay
Nearly noon, kids, half-dressed, getting restless waiting for Mummy. A feed before leaving. The sleepiness too much to bear, Ajab took a nap at his Nani’s place. The usual family portraits were taken. The toddler refusing to sit still. Stories and banter were exchanged. Food in abundance, an all-day feast after the month-long fast. Guests came and went - some famous. Others less so. Our family gatherings are always memorable. Full of fun and laughter. As the night draws in, we take our leave. And put away our good shoes and our booties, to be worn again to the next gathering.

      Hari Raya Celebration
Muslims celebrate the festival of Aidilfitri is popularly known as Hari Raya Puasa, or simply Hari Raya (Day of Celebration) in Malaysia, to mark the culmination of Ramadhan, the holy month of fasting. It is a joyous occasion for Muslims, as it signifies a personal triumph, a victory of self-restraint and abstinence, symbolising purification and renewal. Prayers at the National Mosque during Ramadan Fasting during the month of Ramadhan is compulsory or wajib, whereby Muslims are required to abstain from satisfying their most basic needs and urges, daily, between sunrise and sunset. It is one of the five tenets of Islam; as is the paying of zakat (alms tax for the poor), which must be tithed by the end of Ramadhan. In Malaysia, the period of fasting ends when the new moon is sighted on the evening of the last day of Ramadhan. The actual sighting is conducted by state appointed religious officials at various vantage points (usually at hilltops) throughout the country. If the
