      why I hate hardwood floors
One word: tumbleweeds. I am referring to dust bunnies blowing around in the wind caused by the fans in our electric fireplaces. You can try to sweep them up, but you'll just blow them around. I swear, the tumbleweeds are running away from me and laughing. No matter how much I sweep, the place always looks dusty. Problem number 2: hardwood floors are are cold. Great if you live in the tropics, bad if you don't. Even worse if you have to step from hardwood floors onto cold tile, as we do. The kitchen, dining room and both bathrooms have tile floors that ARE NOT HEATED. I swear, they are several degrees cooler than any other surface in the house. For someone like me who has cold feet most of the time anyway, this is torture. Our house was renovated by the previous owner 2 years ago, and I guess he thought that cold floor surfaces were a good thing. I say, if you're going to the expense of renovating an entire house and putting new tile over one third of it, why not spend a little extra

Invest in Hardwood Trees and Watch Your Money Grow
One of the hottest alternative investments that have come around recently is the investing in hardwood trees. It is both timely and socially responsible as it centers on such topics as the environment, global warming and reforestation. As in most long term investments, you will have to look at the projections and rate of returns. Finca Leola S.A. is a relatively new tree farm in Costa Rica that provides investors with better than stock market returns. As the trees get bigger and the price of hardwood continues to increase, the internal rate of return for the investors is, conservatively, more than 20% per year over the 25 years that it takes the trees to mature. The stock market tends to return about 10% annually over the same time period. When deciding to invest in tropical hardwood tree reforestation, there are a number of important things to consider when it comes to the choice of the company and locations. Here is a short list of things you should be aware of. The soil and th

How to Avoid Gapped or Cupped Hardwood Floors
These hardwood floors are getting the airflow necessary to acclimate Why do some hardwood floors cup or gap over time, while other floors stay flat? The Hardwood Installer tells us a story about two identical situations and the benefits of acclimation. Imagine waiting ten years to finally install hardwood floors only to have them shrink or cup. Hardwood floors expand and contract depending on the environment, so installers acclimate the hardwood floors before installing. What’s Acclimation? Acclimating means to get the hardwood floors use to the environment. The climate in which your hardwood floors are delivered may not be the same environment that your floors are going to be in the rest of the year. If your floors are being delivered on a damp day, they’ll absorb the moisture in the air and that could lead to cupped floors later on and gaps. Stack your hardwood floors like the above picture and acclimate for around 72 hours. Do you have any experiences with your hardwo
